He's not used Oil of Ulay, has he ?

Comment by: janet on 27th January 2011 at 01:22

It's ugly and can someone please tell me what the connection is, between this ugly face and Wigan...

Comment by: irene roberts on 27th January 2011 at 08:40

The face that sunk a thousand shops. Millgate now has space and modernity and, sadly, about as much character as a bin-bag.

Comment by: David on 27th January 2011 at 09:19

What the 'planners' have done to the town -maybe that's the connection.

I was led to believe that the statue was funded by the owners of the Grande Arcade and the national lottery and that the design was chosen by a group of Wigan residents. Maybe you should all be holding them to account.

Comment by: Joan on 27th January 2011 at 10:06

I think this head is superb,People no taste whatsoever, What do they want more shops that keep closing down.

Comment by: Fred Mason on 27th January 2011 at 10:22

Well said, Janet.

Comment by: Catherine on 27th January 2011 at 12:54

I like it too. It's something a bit different and it's obviously got people talking.

Comment by: Tricia on 27th January 2011 at 13:00

Sorry to disagree Fred and Joan. The money oould have been better spent.
It scared me half to death as it loaded the picture!!
Lets face it...its ugly.
No offence intended lol
As for taste, that is what it comes down to... some people like apples, some people like pears. I have Easter Island type statues in my garden and they are pretty compared to this..Just an opinion.

It's growing on me.It seems a pity that the wonderful view across to Haigh Hall from here was revealed for a short time then blocked again by building developement.I Like the close up.

Comment by: emps on 27th January 2011 at 14:23

I really like this ,the pic and the real thing, nice close up.

Comment by: The Face on 27th January 2011 at 14:33

i think its fab and looks great, But wouldn't it be a boring if we all had the same opinion.
Janet does it really need a connection with the town?

Comment by: janet on 27th January 2011 at 15:38

The Face.... I asked that because I understood the reason for the sculpture, was that it was to have some meaning/connection.. to Wigan.....the way the ones at the pier ( before they were stolen) represented Wigan..

Comment by: Mick on 27th January 2011 at 15:53

Its great but its a shame its not in a more prominent position where it can be see by more people.

Comment by: Steve S on 27th January 2011 at 15:56

I love this art work and think it is in the perfect position. I love the fact you turn just off the main drag and 'bam' it's there. Great photo, would love a copy to blow up and frame for my flat in Brighton.

Comment by: betty on 30th January 2011 at 15:11

Would have looked better,if it had a smile on its face.Given enough time that will disappear, like the rest of old wigan.

Comment by: Andyj on 3rd November 2011 at 12:11

So let me see how this head/face relates to the outsiders view of Wigans populace. For a start it has no brains; its head is cleaved. Made to be unclimb-able so they have expected our kids to be little morons. The face is a picture of misery.
Need I say more? Yes!

The method of construction lends itself for mass production so expect it to appear as "The Head of XXX" everywhere. It is a Euro face; not even an approximation of wigan peoples faces! Its VERY expensive in materials alone.
Does nothing useful except block the way.

Some people here in the UK have to chose between "heat or eat". It was part funded by the lottery which is a taxation on people who failed maths. It's also the sort of wasted money that comes from EU grants - The more tin pot the regime the more statues are erected.

This miserable white elephant is as tacky as it gets. It's blocking the way.

I would of preferred a bandstand type roof with a circle of seats so weary legs can be rested, where the real faces of Wigan can sit amongst each other and interact. Maybe even where local bands can play free in the open. I'm thinking of vocal, brass, ukulele, rock....

I want this waste of space, gone.
