That is the River Douglas ????? Where are all the dead dogs, old mattresses etc ?? Mind you, I left Wigan in 1975 so the river could have been cleaned up in that time.
Hello Alan, a lot has changed from 1975 when the river was a different colour each day depending on the dyes being used by the Bleachworks and Pincroft, and remember how it also stank to high heaven with raw sewage! You can actually see the river bottom now with water plants growing and in places there are small fish, I have seen Kingfishers at the rear of Douglas House and also along the Lower Plantations. Who knows in years to come maybe Salmon will once again be seen jumping those small waterfalls along Fourteen Meadows. Yes, United Utilities have done a great job with cleaning up the River Douglas over the years!
It's just not the same now it's clean with fish in it, used to be great when it was a different colour every time you went passed depending on what colour the dye works were using that week ...... :-)
Thanks for the info. I am certainly glad to learn about the "new" Douglas. It was an embarrassment in my day.
From what I can learn from the WiganWorld website,(that I visit almost every day) a lot has changed since I left. Best regards to all forumites.

My dad would have loved to have seen this as he and Tommy Blackledge faught tooth and nail to get the River Dauglas cleaned up. It looks lovely now. Perhaps I will dip my feet next year when I am over and now I won't get a rash !!!
