This was just what I was looking for. The gallery is fantastic. My grandmother, Doris (Cornwell) Shannon was born in Wigan and took me to visit her hometown 20 years ago.
I recognize many sites in your photos.

Traced ancestors back to Wigan in 1800 where they seemed to be fairly high society. Coal mine owner, property owner and sons became doctor and lawyer on King Street in 1820's.
Putting the directories on your site was brilliant. Keep up the good work

Thank you - this is a wonderful find. Some time ago I discovered my 3xg.grandfather, Thomas Snape and his wife Nancy brought up their family in Billinge from 1770 but have only recently discovered that Nancy's surname was Martlew and they married in Ashton in Makerfield and had 2 children before moving to Billinge.
Some of those wonderful old buildings look as if they were there way back then.
I'm having a wonderful time browsing. Thanks again.

Being an ex Wiganer (Norley Hall) and having lived in Australia for most of my adult life, it's nice to see a site that gives you up-to-date information on the happenings around Wigan.

This is my first visit to your site and I found- 1. Pic of our house (St. Michaels walk, Holme Ave) 2. Pics of WGS, 3. People I knew (Theo Major) 4. Dozens of familiar places. Amazing, thank you. I'll be back; got to show my grandchildren.
