Pendlebury;s

Started by: elizabeth (5439)

Any one remember Pendleburys , they had beautiful windows there was one, a round Island window and it was a lovely shop and then I think Debenhams took over and demolished all the beautiful windows and ruined it , Pendlebury's made a lot of their own Furniture and in the yard behind there was a tiny house Mr and Mrs Dawber lived there and she used to make and ice Wedding cakes I think Mr Dawber was the supervisor for the carpenters

July '53 when it burned down, I was working for H.S. Websters lad at Aye Bridge Farm Abram. H.S Webster (demolition contractors Tram St Platt Bridge) got the contract to clear the building, so I spent a couple o'days helping out. We had tons of stuff in the farm buildings, & carpets spread over the fields between the farm & the railway, getting rid of the smell of the fire..

This shows how old I am it used to be called POOLES it started opposite Woolworths and ended nearly at the Ritz they sold every thing including furniture . I used to ask my Mother to take me in Woolworths and then when we got to the side door i used to say =oh lets go out this way== , as it fasinated me seeing the men out side the Furniture windows saying ==come in madam and sit down you will never know how comfortable the 3 piece suites are if you dont try them 1.6 (one shilling and sixpence) will cover it pay once a week , much to my disgust as I wanted to try them ,mother would hurry me past , does any one else remember that

There were a lot of lovely stores like Pendlebury's in many towns which were bought by Debenhams. I think they all lost something when they were no longer family run businesses, a real shame, they all start to look the same, like most high streets do these days. Now every town has a Marks and Spencer, Next, River Island, Primark, Costa Coffee, McDonalds etc etc, before long we won't be able to tell one town from the other - BORING.

I remember the cafe with red leather booths at the side and cream tables with red dining chairs. The doors into the kitchen had round windows like portholes. The waitresses used to wheel a cake trolley around. The crockery was yellos, with raised red spots.

Am I old enough? yes I remember Maltby's wine shop. Do you remember Philips Chemist warehouse in Crawford Street? When I was 11 years old I started work for 2 hours after school at Johnson's Chemist on the corner of Gidlow Lane & Park Road, each day I had to push a hand trolley from Gidlow Lane to Crawford Street, collect the days order from the warehouse and then push it back to Gidlow Lane, then for the rest of the 2 hours I washed empty medicine bottles, to be reused. not like today, throw them away, so yes I am old enough to remember. Elizabeth I will try and find some more old Pictures of Wigan to revive your memory, good old days, I think our generation have had the best of this world in our time, when you think of the poverty and the depression before and when you read the paper's and wonder what the future holds for the kids of today!!!

mojim, The picture is of the old Rugby Shop on the corner of Greeough Street and I think it was Hilton Street. If you look at the picture again you will see that I have added another one, if you imagine them side by side, they more or less match up, the front building on the first is the Old Lancashire Evening Post, which backs on to the Labour Club,(you call it the "Working Men's Club) in front of the Wigan Rugby Groung, where on that day in February 1987 Wigan was playing Castleford, you could watch the game from outside of the ground as they had removed part of the wall.

I hope to come out again in a couple of years time , but sooner if I can afford it , I had a month out there and I loved Mandurah and my son took me to lots of places to see if I would like to live there but mmmmmmm not sure its a big upheavel I began to think there was noone of my age on here that remembered things I did, nice to talk to you Elizabth

You can remove your e-mail address now.
So you came from Mesnes road area? in those days that was as far apart from Woodhouse lane as you could get. I worked with a "Greta Marsden" from that area for a short while, maybe you knew her, she went to America, never to be seen again.

I remember standing near Blundell`s pit in Highfield watching Pendlebury`s burn down. We had a good view over Wigan in those days. They moved to the site of the gas showrooms and the shop on standishgate was rebuilt. I don`t think they moved back there but eventually Debenhams took it over.

All these shops that have been mentioned they were not posh , the true fact of the matter is that you were more than likely to be poor, not that I am accusing anyone mind you. They were relly very good stores though I miss them a lot compared to the trash we have in place of them, they call it progress what a load of cobbler's.

Everything changed when Debedhams took over.
There were two of us named Kathleen, so that's when I became Kate and the name stuck.
