Started by: fred rosbottom (1930)

Am I old enough? yes I remember Maltby's wine shop. Do you remember Philips Chemist warehouse in Crawford Street? When I was 11 years old I started work for 2 hours after school at Johnson's Chemist on the corner of Gidlow Lane & Park Road, each day I had to push a hand trolley from Gidlow Lane to Crawford Street, collect the days order from the warehouse and then push it back to Gidlow Lane, then for the rest of the 2 hours I washed empty medicine bottles, to be reused. not like today, throw them away, so yes I am old enough to remember. Elizabeth I will try and find some more old Pictures of Wigan to revive your memory, good old days, I think our generation have had the best of this world in our time, when you think of the poverty and the depression before and when you read the paper's and wonder what the future holds for the kids of today!!!

mojim, The picture is of the old Rugby Shop on the corner of Greeough Street and I think it was Hilton Street. If you look at the picture again you will see that I have added another one, if you imagine them side by side, they more or less match up, the front building on the first is the Old Lancashire Evening Post, which backs on to the Labour Club,(you call it the "Working Men's Club) in front of the Wigan Rugby Groung, where on that day in February 1987 Wigan was playing Castleford, you could watch the game from outside of the ground as they had removed part of the wall.
