Are you finding what I did, Elizabeth? As you get older, the lens prescription needed gets more and more complex, and the price skyrockets accordingly. And as for the frames, what were once-upon-a-time NHS frames, suddenly are now ridiculously over-priced designer-frames.
I do not renew as frequently as I should. It is just too damned expensive to do so!
The style usually called 'John Lennon glasses', I am sure I must have paid the designer out of my taxes when it was an NHS frame.
Now a couple of hundred quid!
Somehow, I think that is lining the pockets not of any designer, but of someone who has become the 'rights owner' of a registered design!

I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old and then they were pink NHS ones, 😊 lovely.

When I was at university, a lifetime ago, I used to work in an opticians in the holidays and weekends. The rep used to come and sell frames which were for about £1, £2 (in those days) and they would go on the shelves for £25 upwards. I hear it's much the same today but much dearer. So a basic plastic frame is between £2 to £5 now and, if designer, goes on the shelves for £50 upwards. Think about the amount of plastic needed for a pair of specs!
The lenses are, of course, more expensive and adds to the cost.
I have always thought the charges for specs needs investigating.

priscus I have had Mr Lennon's frames from 1970 even when I didn't need glasses I had clear tinted glass in them
Replied: 30th Aug 2017 at 20:53
Last time, but one, I asked for that frame. I almost fell off the chair with shock. (Somewhere about the £250 mark!) grrrrrrr!
I too had such a frame circa 1970, Sure wish that I had kept it!
In the early 1980's, I had 'Peninsular Optical Company', in Hong Kong, make me a pair of specs with said frame. I did not go there specially for that, but a good buy on the air fare would make such a cheaper option than what I find in the UK

I've recently had cataracts in both eyes removed. Previously I could read and see close up, but distance was getting a bit foggy which was not good for driving, hence the surgery.
I now need glasses for use for computer, and another pair for reading, which I didn't need before. Both pairs will cost me £189.00 with a free pair of lightly tinted sunglasses as I am now light sensitive.
These are from Hepworth & Hall, so it's not necessary to pay so much for glasses, and the ones I'm collecting this week are really pretty. Don't know if such opticians practice in Elizabeth's part of the world, but do shop around.
Elizabeth, please don't give up on glasses as your eyesight is the most precious thing you have.

THATS CORRECT DIRECTSIGHT,
YOU WILL NEED A UP TO DATE PRESCRIPTION ,AND YOU NEED TO ASK FOR THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE PUPIL CENTRES OF YOUR EYES ,BECAUSE THAT IS NOT ON THE PRESCRIPTION.
MY SPECS HAVE BEEN PERFECT VISION WISE ,BUT NEXT TIME I WILL PICK THE THINEST LENSES ,THERE A BIT HEAVY ,OBVIOUSLY THINNER THE LENS, SO THE COST GOES UP.

I see there are COSTCOs in Liverpool and Manchester. I can’t answer for the English stores, but here in the US my optician wanted $600.00 (£448) for a pair of glasses. From the opticians at COSTCO I got a much better pair, in four days, for $145.00. (£108) I bought an extra pair for $95.00. (£70). They filled the exact same prescription, of course, and measure your face for a good fit.
For those of you unfamiliar with Costco, they have their own testing labs to ensure quality. They accept returns with a smile. A picky friend of did not like the appearance of her glasses and changed them three times with no problem. Their service is first class. There is a small fee to join COSTCO; here it is $50.00 (£37).
Maybe worth a trip. Perhaps check them out online first.
COSTCO employees are among the best paid, and best looked after, in the retail business. COSTCO works on a flat 15% markup, included in your price, of course.
Take a shopping bag. Ice, too. You won't be able to resist their other bargains. The ice is for meats, fish, chicken...
