Photo-a-Day (Sunday, 20th July, 2025)
Pemberton Conservative Club
Now that's a bonny building, and it would be even bonnier with the greenery removed.
I wouldn't have thought that Pemberton had enough Tory voters for them to have a headquarters.
What a very imposing building. There seemed to be such pride and so much care taken in buildings of that age, both in the basic style AND the decorative touches.
A very classic building. Built when design was everything & everything had a purpose.
Well kept too.
A fine looking building which as the date above the door confirms, built in 1905.
This replaced an earlier club which opened in 1885 as ‘The Pemberton Conservative Working Men’s Club’.
"I wouldn't have thought that Pemberton had enough Tory voters for them to have a headquarters."
Access to a snooker table will influence that.
Buildings like this one are very similar in every town and all seem to have been built around the same time. Same where I live now. In fact they seem to have lasted longer than Labour Clubs. I wonder why that is….!
Mick, I noticed on yesterday’s PAD that I didn’t comment on as I think a photo of those Islamic Ladies going about their own business was intended to coax out some controversial comments which thankfully it didn’t.
However I did detect a note of sarcasm from you by copying and pasting a final comment of thanks from Colin Traynor with regard to his own excellent photo from the day before. Don’t you think it is about time you grew up.
Thanks Brian for your photo of this building, good to see a bit of Pemberton.
We knew that WN6 it’s surprising what we can do when ‘ forearmed’. It’s not that challenging when you think about it . The joy of expressing what is hidden between the lines..well my lines!
But Cyril , how can you be so sure that it was posted by Mick ?
Anyone could have posted it .
It could have been me …
It wasn’t , but it could have been .
See what I mean ? … it’s happening all the time on here lately .
It needs sorting and I feel sure that it could be sorted ; although I’m not as sure that it ever will be .
Thank you for your comment WN6 Arthur
A fine building and made by Accrington bricks. At first clance, I thought it was a disused local Police station, and as WN6 says nice to have a bit of Pemberton.
Maybe you are correct, WN6, but don't controversial comments make the world go around?
And didn't some people on here start criticising KEBABS, which most of them will never have even smelled one, never mind tasted one.
I'm glad nobody mentioned the litter they will have left. I'm pleased to say there was none, because I was on the mower the day after.
And another thing, they did have permission to hold the event.
Ozy, Mick mentioned on a pad a couple of weeks ago that he had taken a photo of Muslim ladies having a picnic and he was disappointed that it hadn't been shown up to then, so I'm pretty certain yesterday's photo WAS Mick's
NEVER in a million years is Arthur using a different name. Just shows how wrong you are Mick. He is too decent to stoop that low.
"I wouldn't have thought that Pemberton had enough Tory voters for them to have a headquarters."
The club was built in 1905, which was before the Labour party took hold in Pemberton.
I wonder why they built 'Pemberton' Conservative Club in Orrell?
‘Park Gardner’ it depends who’s included in the photo these days ….as to whether it’s controversial. Some photos spark opinions and consequently can be deemed racist all for the sake of getting a cheap response to a photo which is posted deliberately and ‘knowingly’ leads to what is intended by the poster - if you
‘catch my drift’.
I’m so glad no litter was left and permission was given for the picnic. It would have been good to know that at the outset.
My apologies, Ozy......I have just realised you meant the COMMENT may not have been Mick's, and I had thought you meant the photo.....a senior moment! I hope I am still on the guest list for The Anderton Dining Emporium!
Apologies to Cyril for erroneously attributing the comment posted by WN6 earlier to him . My mistake .
Brian the conservative club looks impressive,I’m led to believe by Haigh Hall that no barbecues are permitted at Haigh Woodland Park due to fire risk and they do have fixed barbecue facilities that can be hired by prior arrangements which makes sense.
No , I wasn’t meaning the photo of the group of Muslim ladies Irene , I meant the comment posted by WN6 suggesting that Mick had copied and pasted part of the final comment made by Colin on the previous day’s photo .
I have no evidence that Mick himself didn’t post that comment , neither do I have proof that he did … nor does anyone else , but it seems to me that something’s rotten in the state of Denmark .
This site is in need of proper regulation , since no one knows who’s posting under whose name any more .
If you submit a photo on the album , it clearly states that your IP address will be logged in order to avoid abuse , thereby making you traceable .
Why then does this not apply to folks’ comments on p.a.d ?
Surely this is do-able ?
If the poster’s title doesn’t correspond to their IP address then the post could be blocked …
And surely it’s the job of the moderator to ensure that this is done .
But as I’ve said on a number of previous occasions , we’re dealing with a tinpot wannabe pseudo social media site here , where people’s comments quite often get ignored , or worse still , have occasionally been known to get them barred from the site merely for stating their views .
Quite like this one of mine possibly will .
They must have an excellent window cleaner too with those windows so sparklingly clean, and right into the corners too, most of the window cleaners think they are cleaning round windows with a nasty rag, and the changing of the water every so often doesn't even cross their minds - with them thinking, it'll do for another week.
Many years ago I would always be going in all of the pubs and clubs around Pemberton, but never here, no idea as to why, though it is tucked away down a side street. Looking it certainly seems to be lot more welcoming than the West Ward Labour club did (now gone of course, but was always handy if you had a few teeth needed taking out, or face re-arranging), or the Lamberhead Green Workingman's club, or straight out of the wild west The Ravine Club, and also The Sportsmans.
Ozy, no idea as to what you are on about at 10:39, I haven't commented anywhere about Mick posting something or other. Are you confusing me with WN6?
I am a WN as I do reside in Wigan, but 'I am not a number' and would rather use my name. ;¬{
Is that a tash you’ve grown Cyril ?…
Hmmmm ! …. I suppose I’ll get used to it over time …
Or is it that you’re frowning at me ?
No , you’re quite right … I was confusing you with WN6 .
I did post an apology , but like my tax rebate it has yet to appear .
Oh wait , it’s just turned up halfway up the page near Irene’s response to my comment which is farther down the page .
How the bloody hell this site functions is beyond my comprehension .
But of course you’re still on the guest list Irene , but it’s The AnderSon Dining Emporium my dear … not AnderTon …
Just to be pedantic .
BTW , don’t forget to bring a pair of wellies , but don’t worry if you don’t have a pair as we hire them out at the door … All sizes and colours are available and some of them are even waterproof .
Ozy please stop trying to cause trouble on this great site. Not many people can follow you, why try and stair trouble.
I agree with Cyril.
Wn6 made a valid point that's all.
Sorry, Ozy, of course the Emporium is in The Anderson Shelter! I was getting it mixed up with my late parents' "local" in Ince....The Anderton Arms. I will bring my own wellies....they are Neoprene.....very posh.....which will grace such a high-class Emporium and will look wonderful with my Afternoon Tea-Gown.
Cyril. my husband and I used to go around with a "Duo" in the early 1970s, in the days when Labour Clubs and Working Men's Clubs abounded, and I remember Pemberton West Ward and "Lomra Green". I don't think the duo ever appeared at The Conservative Club but it looks a nice place, although I can't imagine someone shouting "Pies 'ave Come!" in there!
Could I bring Mabs with me Ozy she would eat all the left overs then
you wouldn’t need t’hoover up afterwards. Plus she’d like playing with the welly boots she likes pretending she’s ferocious when she gets things between her teeth. It’ll be a change from her giant teddy bear that she’s always scrapping with and the poor thing is worn out…...
Not much constructive on here as we draw near the end. :>(
Really good photo Brian of a well built building in Pem.
Mick at 10:44 can you elaborate please.
Malc , why not teach yourself to spell words that kids at infant school have long since mastered ?
Alan, I think the building is in Orrell like Mick said above.
No tash grown Ozy, it was just a curly tash bracket I thought I'd put there, and maybe to make Mick jealous
The boundary between Pemberton and Orrell may stagger along Park Road and Baldwin Street, maybe the markers of the boundary had been in the club first.
Ozy, As long as you get the point I'm making.
Cyril, the boundary doesn't touch Park Road or Baldwin Street, they are both fully in Orrell. It does wander a bit though, it probably followed a path worn by the cows in the olden days.
I fail to see the point that you’re trying to make tbh Malc .
You say that not many people can follow me , but how do you know that ? … or have you conducted a census ?
Maybe you can’t follow my logic, and I’ll have that , but how can you speak for others ?
You also say that I’m causing trouble on the site when all I’m doing is highlighting a problem that’s been ongoing for years and could most likely be easily rectified were the site more strictly regulated … I.e. the problem of people posting under both false and multiple names .
And if that’s causing trouble then I plead guilty as charged .
You say it’s a great site and that’s your opinion .
I say it’s currently a shambles … and that’s mine .
So stay lucky Malc … Ozy .
Ozy.... You post and comment under the name Eddie quite a number of times especially with your HGV post. As you can see, I'm not using my real name but my user name.
Many on the site including myself much prefer this and there's no harm done.
Take care.

.
Well said Ozy.
An admirable summary of what this once wonderful site has become.
Moderation seems to consist of allowing trolls to run riot, and censoring genuine posters who do not conform to the moderator's mindset.
'Tinpot' indeed.
It's a laughing stock.
Veronica, the Tory Club in Up Holland closed years ago as both members died. UpHolland Labour club continues to go from strength to strength. In general political clubs are nothing like as popular as they once were.
Thanks A.W where I live we had ‘Top’ Labour Club and’ Bottom’ Labour Club both ‘gone’ a good few years ago. The Reform Club has gone but the building is still there. The Conservative Club still reigns supreme and very much used….
( even if we aren’t Tory’s.) Labour isn’t for the ‘workers’ these days far too ‘’Leftie’’ imo.
A.W., being in Digmoor, Skelmersdale, UpHolland Labour Club will get all the Labour voting Scousers in so it's no wonder it's busy.
