Beware 'The Beelzebub'

The Inn dates back to the 16th Century when it was then known as the 'White Cross Coaching House'. The story goes that in the 18th century a local sign writer having had a pint too many mistakenly re-wrote the name as The White Crow and the name stuck.
Within an alcove above the fire place on the gable end is a stuffed White Crow that goes by the name of 'Beelzebub', it faces the wall and legend has it that if it is turned around the pub will be cursed with bad luck.

I sometimes go to Chorley when the Tuesday Market is on. I don’t remember seeing it on the bus route but I must look out for it next time I go. It looks as if the pub does well.
What a very pleasant looking pub that is Colin, very welcoming & tidy. I like the story of the crow !
I haven't been there for years but used to go regularly . I'd forgotten about the stuffed crow but remember him now, although I never knew he had a name!
Veronica i did not know chorley market was still going may i ask has all the outdoor market got a lot off stalls and is it in the same place i havent been for about 15 years nice picture.
I dont believe the sign writer story, no matter how much ale had, somebody would have stopped him writing Beelzbug.
You won't see this pub on the Chorley bus route because it's in Worthington.
At one time, you used to see one white crow who lived for several years near St Wilfrid's football ground.
We used to go there occasionally in the 1970s and 80s. It was a lovely pub and had a nice warm and welcoming atmosphere. Lovely photo Colin, thank you.
It’s not on the main bus route….its on Chorley Rd leading to Frederick’s Ice Cream Parlour and Duxbury Park Golf Course
Veronica, the Chorley bus doesn't go past the White Crow.
It goes up the A49 through Standish, and then turns up Spendmore Lane at Coppull.
THe White Crow is at Worthington, about a mile past Kilhey Court, as you travel towards Adlington.
Veronica, it’s on the road to Chorley from Boars Head, down past the Bleachworks it comes out on the A6 opposite Fredrick’s Ice Cream Parlour.
There is a bus from Wigan that goes down there but it turns off left at Bradley Lane and goes back through Standish.
A very pleasant walk from if you go through the fields at Langtree , Hic Bibe and over Coppull Hill . You won't be bothered with any traffic or unlikely to meet many folk . Keep your eyes peeled though when you reach the cow field for sometimes there's a menacing looking bull in there .
A nice pint in the beer garden and walk back a slightly different way past Talbot House Kennels .
When I say walk back 'slightly differently' , naturally I'm referring to geography not the effects of alcohol . Cheers .
In 1688 the Adlington Estate and Manor House where purchased by Thomas Clayton who was descended from Robert de Clayton who came to England with William The Conqueror and was granted lands known as Clayton-le-Moors for his outstanding military service.
In 1690 he bought the adjoining manor of Worthington from Edward Worthington and his wife Jane.
The Clayton Coat of Arms on a Funeral Hatchment along with three others are displayed on the north wall inside St Wilfrid’s Church Standish.
I will send of photo of them to PAD taken this morning, they might feature in the next week or so!
This seems to be a huge building just for a pub. The landlord must be doing something right to keep it as a going concern in this day and age.
Any landlord managing to keep a pub going in current times deserves admiration. It is not easy and they are closing daily. This building seems to be huge which would make it even more difficult. I can’t even see a satellite dish but assume it would have one somewhere.
Have they repaired all those dreadful potholes in Chorley. Last time I when to the overrated market the roads were very bad.
Mick, you should put your glasses on in a morning.
He so called painted the sign WHITE CROW.
The signwriter,( if the story is true), DIDN'T write "Beelzebub" at all....he wrote "White Crow" when he should have written "White Cross". Colin made that quite clear. A friend of mine once took a lady for a meal there, and there used to be horses in the field behind the pub. When they got to the car after the meal, the lady told my friend she was sure she had seen a zebra in the field! When they went back to look, it was a horse wearing a horse-blanket patterned with zebra stripes!
Thank you to all who put me on the right track it’s no wonder I missed it. I would have remembered such a lovely old stone building.
Julie I only went a couple of times last year on the bus from Wigan . It was very good and worth going for a change. I also went in the park and the cafe near the old Tudor Hall building…( which was closed).
WN6 I was wearing my glasses, but the lenses were dirty; they're okay now.
Howard, I agree that the market is overrated now, but it still attracts customers who have free bus passes.
We visit Chorley a lot, but it's mainly to the charity shops.
Apart from Healy Nab , Chorley’s main attraction is the fact that it’s seven miles from Wiggin .
If it were another twenty miles distant , then I’d probably find the place even more inviting .
A favourite venue in the mid 1960’s when I first met my (now) husband.
