Silence Is Golden

Silence Is Golden
A picturesque pastoral scene near the path leading down to Boars Head Farm.
Behind me would have been Boars Head Station on the West Coast Mainline and the line branching off to be joined by the Whelley Loop line before reaching Red Rock, White Bear and Adlington Stations and continuing on to Blackburn.

That's not the Wigan I remember, but similarly beautiful
Alan, western Canada.

Am I right in thinking that line would have taken passengers to the ROF at Euxton? When I worked there I knew a lot of people from Whelley and Standish who travelled on the train. I started there the week after the train was no longer used and people were picked up by coach. I knew one lady who was called by the place where she lived as “ Bradley Alice.”

That's a beautiful scene. I've been to what was once White Bear Station with a friend many years ago. Such a shame those stations were closed down.

By coincidence Veronica, I was talking with my brother yesterday about the ROF Factory at Euxton and he was telling me that there was a line into the factory and that it picked workers up from Boars Head and Standish Stations.

In someways England is still a green & pleasant land as this photo of Colin's shows.

Thanks Colin..it was built specially in Wartime. Thousands travelled there from all over. It was like another town going through the gates. Demolished now but more factories will be needed with the situation and changing order in the world.

Helen, that’s so true.
Many still think that northern towns are as grim as they were in the past or as often portrayed in the media but a short walk away from any northern towns main roads you can find some stunning scenery.
I might be biased but I think Wigan is particularly blessed as PAD often demonstrates.

Is that Alan in Western Canada who used to post comments a while ago ?

Great photo Colin of a bygone railway age. If you look at item number 21679 taken by Peter Worthington in 1963, it shows another angle on the same track. Cheers.

Colin could you’re photo be close to Standish Wood Lane as it looks familiar?

How nice to hear from you Alan....best wishes.

John, it's down the lane where Boars Head Station once was, it's now a farm lane and at the side of Boar's Head rail bridge on Wigan Road, just after the blocks of tenements, or apartments as is the modern term for them.
Sometimes when driving past there I've often seen Mick and other cyclists disappearing down there, so it may be a scenic cycle route/footpath to the bottom of Chorley Road.
