Think you might have missed the.boat with this one Dennis or in this case the old Thomas Linacre School.
See PAD 2nd February 2025.

How time flys by, now you see it now you don’t!
It’s only a few weeks ago that they had started the demolition of the old TLS building.
Seems to have vanished in the blink of an eye.

Good Grief !!

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 4th April 2025 at 10:46

It doesn’t take long to knock them down these days…and not much longer to chuck them up either.

I wish they would get on with all the changes in Wigan. It’s getting a bit depressing having to see the Town disrupted for year after year

It’s hard to imagine, but sheep used to graze here not that long ago.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 4th April 2025 at 11:52

It’s funny you say that Dennis, I was in Wetherspoons yesterday and there was a bunch of workmen sat next to me. I asked they were working on the new build, they said no we’re demolishing the rest of Wigan.
Then another piped up and said he was working on the old Civic Centre in Millgate. I asked when will that be finish then? he just laughed and said ‘when the council stump up the money!’.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 4th April 2025 at 12:12

This is most certainly not a complaint about Dennis's photo; Dennis is a brilliant photographer and I look forward to his posts. This is just a personal comment on the SUBECT of the photo. I am so depressed and fed up of seeing the wholesale demolition of Wigan. I only go when I have to these days, and that is usually for blood tests at The Linacre, taking me past both the wasteland that is the demolition of The Galleries AND the demolition of The Thomas Linacre School. All I want to do when I leave the blood test centre is get on the bus and get away from a town I used to love. WHY can't they leave things alone?!

Comment by: Arthur on 4th April 2025 at 14:56

Here Here, Irene.
I go to Leigh Hospital for my bloods, in and out and easy to park, and a brilliant bus route if you can't drive. I know I've been to Linacre. Just give it a try next time, you won't be disappointed.

Comment by: Peter on 4th April 2025 at 14:59

Sick of seeing demolition and buildings. Irene's spot on.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 4th April 2025 at 15:21

Use it or lose it and I’m afraid Wiganer’s didn’t use it and lost it.
So don’t be depressed Irene, those new blocks of flats it the town centre should cheer you up. Like me I’m sure you can’t wait for that promised new climbing wall!
I’ve already been on line and reserved three tickets for us both and Veronica.
Make sure you’ve pressed your Lycra All In One though, we don’t want to be overdressed!
You never know Dennis or Mick might be there and have a camera at the ready. Standards must be maintained at all times.

What about the name given to the replacement of The Galleries ?

'Fettlers'

Fettle, Fettle, Fettle.

Fettlers, was the name of a back street garage business in Henry Park Street, which is off Darlington Street East.

I never thought that they would name a Town Centre Development after that place.

Comment by: Veronica on 4th April 2025 at 15:24

It’s wicked and depressing what has gone. It’s almost unrecognisable these days. I’ve lost touch with what is being done and what is going to be built on there. Very sad I agree Dennis.

Comment by: Mick on 4th April 2025 at 15:47

Irene, I agree with you It's so depressing seeing photos like these that keep getting put on here.
I must have sent in at least a dozen photos of the lovely parts of Wigan, but mine never seem to appear.

I know Leigh Hospital well, Arthur, and have been this morning as my husband had an appointment, but we had to pay £3.20 to park as the procedure he had done took an hour; I think you can only park for free for a very short time, mainly for dropping people off. We didn't see any parking places except in the hospital grounds, unless you know of any? We can go easily on the bus from near home but it is quite a long walk down The Avenue and then back , and my feet aren't too good at the moment. But thankyou for the recommendation. Colin, I'm sure Veronica and I can't wait to go on the Climbing Wall.....we'll probably end up on News at Ten, (not that I watch it), as well as p-a-d, (and more than likely in Leigh Infirmary too!......we'll ring you, Arthur, to give us a lift!)

I’m in favour of progress; it’s change I don’t like ….

I've heard that name Fettlers mentioned and assumed it to be an April Fools Day Joke.
I've also heard that it's buildings for the college to be built there, and it to become a University - though I've heard that before too.

Comment by: Elizabeth on 4th April 2025 at 18:07

Couldn't agree more Irene,so very depressing.I suspect the name 'Fettlers' may have been stolen from Fettlers Wharf at Rufford??

Comment by: Mick on 4th April 2025 at 18:20

Irene, they have a small bus that runs from the bus station to the hospital.

Comment by: Lobbygobber on 4th April 2025 at 18:22

We’re gonto bulldoze the lot and dump on Sentelins.

Comment by: Mick’s Tracky Bottoms on 4th April 2025 at 20:28

I wish it was only a collage, Dennis. Unfortunately, it’s all very real.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 4th April 2025 at 20:59

Thankyou Mick. The bus you mention was there when we arrived on the car park in the car this morning; unfortunately whenever I am on foot , my appointments never seems to co-incide with "The Avenue" bus! If my feet are okay, as they sometimes are, the walk down The Avenue isn't too bad, but it's a long way when walking is difficult. Next time I go I will study the bus timetable in the bus-shelter to see how often they are.

Comment by: Mick , on 5th April 2025 at 07:31

No need to do any studying of timetables Irene, just stand at the bus station with a daft lost look on your face and some friendly Leigher will put you on the right bus.

Comment by: Veronica on 5th April 2025 at 08:18

What a condescending
remark to make. Irene is far more intelligent than you try to make her out or you could ever be with your daft talk.

Comment by: Arthur on 5th April 2025 at 09:25

Irene, you can park outside Leigh Hospital on the Avenue near Lilford Park, its free for two hour, thats ample time for anyone.
There is a small space for permit holders too thats clearly signed.
It's never been a problem for me.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 5th April 2025 at 12:24

Thankyou Veronica and Arthur. I hadn't realised further comments had been added on here until a few minutes ago. I answered you but lost the internet as I pressed "submit", so not sure if it will appear. But thanks for your kind comments.

Comment by: DTease on 5th April 2025 at 23:31

Mick, I can see how standing there with a daft face would work for you, but it wouldn’t be any use for the rest of us would it?
