Teeing Off

Teeing Off
The beautiful course at Gathurst Golf Club, Miles Lane, Shevington, looking in the direction of Ashurst Beacon across the Douglas Valley.
It was formed on 1913 as the clouds of war gathered over Europe by four well known gentlemen from Shevington living in Gathurst Lane who were finalising their plans to form a new golf club in the Parish of Shevington and it would be named 'Gathurst Golf Club'.
If not for them, no doubt all this today would be one vast housing estate.

The original club was up the farm track that goes past Balls Farm, it was only a shed and moved to its present location when the M6 came and cut it in half.
A lot of Shevy lads used to go caddying at the weekend, including me; I ended up caddying for the club captain at that time, Eric Rigby, owner of Pemberton Caravans, when he was playing away. He would come to the club to pick me up, and we would zoom off in his Mark 10 Jaguar.

I forgot to mention that the two trees standing next to one another are called Hokey and Kokey.

Comment by: Robert on 24th March 2025 at 07:19

We need more land to build houses, more so now, just look around to see how many more people has entered the Country.
We are full, bursting at the seems.

Comment by: WN6 on 24th March 2025 at 07:47

You see some great views of the golf course when on the train to Southport, it covers a much greater acreage than you might think.
Driven past a few times but never called in, not being a golf fan but it does look nice and well maintained.
Cracking photo.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 24th March 2025 at 08:43

Glad it's still a nice view and not a housing estate but got no time for golfers. Sorry.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 24th March 2025 at 08:52

Mick, I did wonder if they had lost land to the M6, I peaked over the fence from the car park and it is quite close, although well shielded from the roar of the traffic with trees and bushes.
Although well shielded lived in Shevington for 25 years I think the only time I visited was for the Queens Silver Jubilee, they put on all kinds of events for children including pony rides.

Comment by: Mick on 24th March 2025 at 08:52

I see Irene's woke up in a nowty mood again.
What about if the golfers were dressed up in tartan plus-fours and flatcap.

Comment by: Pat McC on 24th March 2025 at 09:51

Irene, who was it said about golf - "a good walk spoiled"!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 24th March 2025 at 11:15

Mick, I and am sure others would be pleased if you would desist from making these unwarranted insults towards Irene. They are both infantile and annoying.
I cannot see the point of golf, mainly grown men buying expensive sticks to get a ball into a hole, I’d rather watch the grass grow.

Comment by: Poet on 24th March 2025 at 11:31

There's golfers and golfers. This looks a far cry from hacking round Haigh Hall in football foots with a score of 200+, daisy cutting all the way .
You're far more likely to see tracky bottoms than plus fours . Forget the gaudy tops . No shirt in the height of summer is de rigueur for the muni golfer .
A minimum of 20 balls is required and useful additions to the bag are a machete , particularly for the rhododendrons on the 1st tee , and a cocky net for scooping your ball out the canal .

Comment by: Kath on 24th March 2025 at 13:03

Robert, fully agree with you, pity there's not more people like you about.
Most of our land will be used, I can see it coming.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 24th March 2025 at 13:26

Thankyou Colin, but I didn't take any notice....I am used to Mick, I hope any golfers on here weren't ready to hit me with their golf clubs! But everyone else passes their opinion on here, and I am entitled to do the same, and I did say "Sorry" in case people didn't like my comment. I just find it a very "Hyacinth Bouquet" rather snobbish pursuit. As I say, it's just one person's opinion; I don't expect others to agree.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th March 2025 at 13:32

I think I would be more interested in the views than getting a ‘ hole in one’…
Good photo though Colin I-can feel the breeze and the Spring scent in the air.

Comment by: ALISTAIR on 24th March 2025 at 14:33

As a Keen Golfer for many years, I suggest you keep your options to yourself Colin Traynor.
Everyone as different hobbies.

Comment by: Mick on 24th March 2025 at 14:41

The view is even better if you get out of the car park and walk down to the valley, that's what I would have done.
Yes indeed Colin the M6 did cut the golf course in half
Us wild kids used to play on the bit left on the Gathurst Lane side, and lots of families got new lawns by digging up the greens.
The land eventually became the Oval housing estate, named the Oval because the land was Shevingtons cricket pitch before it became the golf course.
The white farmhouse next to the clubhouse was Mellings farm, they farmed all the land down to the railway line, which later was taken over by the golfers.

Comment by: Gwen on 24th March 2025 at 14:45

I hate golfers as well Irene.

Comment by: Golf ball on 24th March 2025 at 15:05

Colin I can't see the point why people buying Curry and Chips. Curry is awful.

Comment by: Katie on 24th March 2025 at 16:03

Buildings are really boring, I don't understand people photographing a brick wall. My husband loves golf, it helps him unwind.

Comment by: Tom on 24th March 2025 at 16:27

Irene love, do you have a golf course in Abram?

Comment by: Gordon on 24th March 2025 at 16:31

Mick what about if Golfers were wearing 40s outfits. Some may like it then :-)

Comment by: Harry on 24th March 2025 at 16:38

People have different opinions and hobbies, some like old smelly cars or old fashioned clothes. I like trendy clothes and new electric cars. Everybody's different.
I'm not keen on golf, never played it, but respect people who do.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 24th March 2025 at 16:56

I said I don’t see the point of golf but it would not do for everyone to like the same thing. So keep on hit those balls into small holes if that’s what you like.
I prefer an oval ball kicked between two posts but that’s me. Or a walk around a historic garden or cathedrals.
You cannot please everyone with your specific interest, like teasing old age pensioner ladies just for the fun of it.

Comment by: WN6 on 24th March 2025 at 17:21

Katie me too, don’t like brick walls, double yellow lines or graffiti but I do like curry and chips. Especially from Shevy Chippy.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 24th March 2025 at 17:34

No, "Tom", love, we don't have a golf course in Abram, I am glad to say. Harry, I don't expect other people to like old cars and 1940s outfits.....they are entitled to their opinions on those things as I am entitled to my opinions on golf. It would be a very boring world if everyone played just one sport or liked the same vehicles or fashions. Variety is the spice of life and I agree with you that we are all different. Unfortunately, the few people I have known who are golfers have been snooty towards me and perhaps that has clouded my judgement.

Comment by: Jimmy on 24th March 2025 at 18:09

I have a VW Golf...love it, many people don't, and I couldn't care less.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th March 2025 at 20:10

Well said Irene and always polite in your exchanges. You are definitely entitled to your opinion as we all are. I’m a born and bred Wiganer but I have no interest at all in Rugby ..I would be bored to death watching a match but I do like knowing Wigan are on top of their game and delighted when they win. I can’t stand football either or cricket…

Comment by: John Noakes on 24th March 2025 at 20:26

Jimmy, I have a VW Polo, but I can't ride a hoese and I hate mints.

Comment by: Mack on 24th March 2025 at 22:35

I know there is a lot of rivalry whether Shevington or Aspul is the premier Wigan suburb. I would just ask the question - does Aspul have a golf course?

Comment by: Alistair on 25th March 2025 at 03:29

Yes....Hindley Hall Golf club, Hall Lane, Aspull, WN2 2SQ.
You need to be a certain class of person to be a member.

Comment by: Kath on 25th March 2025 at 04:23

Irene, Harry never mentioned 1940s outfits just old fashioned clothes. Although he does have a point.
I have never played golf so can't comment on that sport.
One thing is for sure, we all like Wigan world pad, it brings us all together one way or another.

Comment by: Dick Dastardly on 25th March 2025 at 08:29

Today , I think he's broke the record for silly false names .

Comment by: Katie on 25th March 2025 at 09:18

The silliest false name is Dick Dastardly.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th March 2025 at 10:34

Actually Katie DD is a fictional character from the animated series by Hanna Barbra Productions from 1968 onwards. Hardly silly I would say. Dick
Dastardly ‘s most famous appearances are in the series Wacky Races and the spin off Dastardly and Mutley in their flying Machines. I think it’s a good choice and better than changing names every other comment.

Comment by: Katie on 25th March 2025 at 12:38

I know who the character is, I mean who doesn't. Still, many use daft names to cover their tracks. Ie, how many Micks are used.

Comment by: Mutley on 25th March 2025 at 13:04

I love watching Golf on TV, but never played it.

Comment by: Barrington on 25th March 2025 at 15:24

Irene, I'm a so called Toff and love the beautiful game of Golf. Never doubt anything until you try it. As Alistair said earlier, you have to be a certain class of person to be a member. To me Golf is more than a game, it's life.
Thank you Irene and I do respect your honesty.
