Photo-a-Day (Wednesday, 19th March, 2025)
Leeds Liverpool Canal

Photo: Mick Byrne (.)
Pray tell where abouts is this?
Almost sepia in colour, well timed Mick to catch the train passing by which adds to the interest.
Everything is mostly brown, in a few weeks time Everything with be green.
This is a fantastic photo that's got everything.
Lovely Mick, we are seeing more canal boats passing by now that the weather is getting better, but I've not seen you on your bike this year yet.
Pad viewers will be waking up this morning and thinking hey, up, that's a lovely view I've never seen before, and probably never will, because it's in between Appley Bridge and Parbold, a good walk to get to it.
But for me, it's a view that takes me 200 and odd years, just imagine farmer Ted coming into his house after being out mowing his meadow all day and his wife's says there's a letter come for you farmer Ted
So Ted would have read the letter, and he would have said he by gum our Alice it says they are going to dig a big deep cutting across our Meadow and fill it up with water so that boats can travel from Leed to Liverpool carrying cotton and coal and other stuff.
His wife, who was a bit of a stick in the mud, might have said that won't work Ted; how many people have boats out here in the countryside? Ted would have said well they could build some, I suppose.
But that wasn't what Ted was concerned about. He was worried about being cut off by the new cut, so he wouldn't be able to cut his Meadow.
So serene Mick. Thank you
Nice muted colours …looks good no rubbish about. Usual standard photo from yourself.
Is this somewhere near where you live, Kath and Joan, as it seems familiar to you? I have very happy memories of the train journey to Southport as a child, but just don't recognise this area. Perhaps it's on the line between Wigan and Manchester, with which I am not familiar; it was the Wigan to Southport part I knew. I remember my Dad reciting all the stations between Wigan and Southport...happy memories of the last days of steam when I was a child.
A few minutes ago I put a comment on asking Kath and Joan whereabouts this bridge is? Since then Mick's comment explaining where it is has appeared; obviously comments are added at strategic points during the day so I hadn't seen Mick's explanation when I asked the question. My comments will probably be added with the next lot.
Seen that view many times Mick it’s one of my favourite rides Howfen to Parbold by road then back to Haigh Hall by canal, bought 4 boxes of Lancashire crisps the other day at the farm where they make um I recon you like those to.
I know where 'one man went to mow'
Thanks for the nice photo and your farmer Ted tale Mick Byrne.
To the answer to your question Irene, I was merely just praising Mick for this photo.
John (Howfen) the farmer's wife used to sell her homemade bread a cakes a few back don't know if she still does or not.
I apologise to Irene, I don't know why just thought that its a nice day I would get one apology in.
Sometime later, Ted might have been sitting down to his dinner when there was a knock at the door; his wife would have said Ted, there's a posh-looking man at our door asking for you.
The man would have said. Ted we are going to start work next week on the new canal, Ted would have said hang on a bit, how will I be able to get across you cut when the grass in the meadow needs cutting, the poshman would have said don't worry Ted we will build hump back bridge so you can cross the cut the grass in your Meadow.
Well, Mick, I am at a loss....you gave me a "Thankyou" on p-a-d a few days ago, saying you didn't know why you were thanking me, and today you have given me an apology, stating that don't know why you are apologising....... A mystery indeed! I would thank you if I knew what I was thanking you for. Anyway, I agree that it has been a nice day; it does feel as if Spring is on the way and I hope you and everyone on Wigan World have enjoyed the sunshine.
That’s correct Mick about fiddlers crisp shop we’ve been going for a few years but it was shut the other day so always worth checking as they do some great food there.
It’s nice to see a picture where there’s no dandelions in cracks and lads relieving themselves against the stone walls…2more days and it’s officially Spring - yippee! Thanks Irene for your good wishes.
