Grassy Slopes of Wigan

Grassy Slopes of Wigan
The expansive lawns and Grade II Listed Pavilion in Mesnes Park built around 1880 are perfect for a quiet walk, a breath of fresh air and time for reflection on a cold morning.
The Lantern, internal columns and entrance canopy of the Pavilion were manufactured by Walter MacFarlane & Co of the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow.
Many Wiganers have climbed up that graceful flight of steps over the last 140 years from somber late Victorians to elegant Edwardian ladies with parasols and as each decade rolled by witnessed countless generations of children rolling down those grassy slopes.

The Green, Green Grass of Home. Not to mention the beautiful clear blue sky. Picture Perfect.

I wonder if Walter Macfarlane was. Any relation to the two Macfarlane brothers.
You never know what a Macfarlane could have. Come down to Wigan to supervise the pavilion erection and then stay on; I don't suppose we will ever know.

I have missed a few days...the gremlins seem to have been at work.
This a great photo to come back to....I used to love getting a wafer ice cream from the man on the ice cream bike out side the cafe !

One of the most photographed places on Pad, but never get tired of seeing it.
Wigan Park is the name we've always known it to be.
Only one think missing Spring flowers, but beautiful Colin.

It's always nicer round the lake.
Full of wildlife in spring.

Happy memories of the cafe in the late 1950s nd a glass of Vimto with a blob of ice-cream floating on top. The original statue of the Boer War soldier stood outside in those days and my Dad always read the inscription out loud whilst I rolled carefree down those grassy slopes. A lovely photo, Colin.

Oh, Helen, sorry about that. It was one of My photos yesterday that you missed out on.

Some things never change thankfully - it’s a very familiar scene of the steps and the Park Cafe even if the town has lost so much.

Great place.

Wigin Park will be packed with folk on Sunday, 16th March, 2025.

The Joining Jack, Wigan 5k race is booked up. No worries if you haven't entered there is also a half marathon and family mile.

For those who's running days are over get your pumps on, have a walk in the park and check it out folks.

If you can't make it on the day the Wigan 10k is later in the year.

Good photo Colin.

Arthur, on the day I took the photo the flower beds weren’t quite yet at their best.
I have sent couple of other photographs over the last week or so of spring flowers, I hope that space can be found for them to appear as I think they are worthy.
I have just noticed something in the sky above the dome but can’t make out what it is, does anyone have any suggestions?

I love Wigan park,so many met here..I would look forward to School holidays and take the children every day when it was possible..and take sweeties and comics so when they’d finished on the swing etc they wouldn’t get bored.
When I was in my very early teens my mam bought me a little black doll..put it down a the side of me turned around and it had gone...so going through the old market I spotted one and bought it which I still have.

I think Emmer should be Emma.
What do you think Mick.

Really lovely photo and a place we've all visited.

A picturesque image of the Mesnes Park Pavilion Café and the Boer War Memorial, this soldier more appeasing I suppose than was the original. The viridescence of the grass is contrasting beautifully with the blue of the firmament - and where urban gulls can be seen going about on their daily hunt for food.

I can also see that a few Bellis perennis are growing there and flowering too, though most likely not enough for young Violet & Phoebe or even Cornelious & Percival to make a Daisy chain necklace apiece, bracelets - possibly...

Did yoo know that Bridgeman Terrace, which overlooks the park, that used to be called Park View.

Well spotted Colin. It looks like a bird of prey, possibly a Buzzard.
