A View For All Seasons

A View For All Seasons
By kind permission of a very generous lady, I was able to take this photograph of the panoramic view she has across the Douglas Valley from the patio at the back of her beautiful home at the top of Wigan Lane.
In the distance tucked within the tree line of Haigh Country Park you can make out Haigh Hall which looks to have had most of its wrapping removed.
Farms dot the landscape and I can see a couple of Horses grazing in a Paddock.
Out of site but down there no doubt are Sennicar Lane, WRUFC, the River Douglas the Canal and many other landmarks and features.

What is the large wooden structure bottom right for?

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd March 2025 at 07:29

Although it doesn’t fully convey the real life experience I trust that you like the photograph and trust that the generosity of the lady who allowed me to take it will not be marred by any unkind comments I have seen on some recent WW posting.
One minor correction before someone picks up on it, should be ‘Out of Sight, not Site’. Thank you.

Wow! That’s like stepping into another world in the countryside and leaving the busy main road behind. Clean fresh air to breathe and I’m thinking of washing blowing in the breeze! Breakfast on the patio weather permitting and parties galore. What more could you ask for? Lovely photo….some folk are very lucky.

Thats more like it nice picture and greenery about time!

Comment by: WN6 on 2nd March 2025 at 08:58

To think, all this wonderful countryside just on our doorstep.
As you say, a view for all seasons. Lucky Lady.

Comment by: Arthur on 2nd March 2025 at 09:17

Now that is really beautiful waking up to that view each morning. Absolutely fantastic you'd want to live to 100.
Colin, lovely photo and thanks to the generous lady too.

Unusual to see a Telegraph pole in the back garden, after saying that, its got stunning views goog un Colin.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd March 2025 at 10:09

Colin, to take that photo, were you standing behind one of the houses on the same side of the road as where Mere Oaks School used to stand or on the opposite side? You mention being able to see Haigh Hall, but also you mention Wigan RUFC, and I thought they would have been on opposite sides of Wigan Lane? Sorry if I'm confused, but a sense of direction was never my strong point! That looks like a "posh" hopscotch bed leading up to the chairs and table!

Comment by: Very big Gordon on 2nd March 2025 at 10:46

I have too many words to describe this photo. Here's just a few. Beautiful, fantastic, quitet, stunning, gorgeous, breathtaking.....I think the sunshines there everyday. The birds have started to sing in the morning. What more could one want.
Colin one of your better ones.

Comment by: Kath on 2nd March 2025 at 11:11

Stunning photo Colin, Love it!
Colin no needs to explain about spelling mistakes, most people on here knew what you meant.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 2nd March 2025 at 11:14

Peter, it's a big swing.
I saw a similar view when I visited the Haighfield Care Home.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd March 2025 at 11:35

Colin, I have puzzled and puzzled over this photo and think I have got my bearings now. I used to know a couple who live in one of the houses opposite The Boar's Head and that would have been their view from the back of their house. My apologies!

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 2nd March 2025 at 12:02

I think the the wooden structure is one of those seats that move gentle it & fro when you sit down with a nice glass of white wine in your hand & the summer sun shines while you admire the view...its minus it's sunshade cover etc at the moment but you get the gist....

Comment by: Doug Spenser on 2nd March 2025 at 12:35

Have been looking for a room there Mick, don't forget they have the knowhow to sprise cash from the tightest clad fist. The home I'm in got it from me house and all, no matter where you put it they find it

Comment by: Puzzles on 2nd March 2025 at 12:52

Mick I'm a little puzzled about the wooden swing you mentioned?
What Peter says is about the Telegraph pole. I can't even see a swing.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 2nd March 2025 at 13:10

Helen, I believe it will swing without having a glass of wine in your hand, and you can use them in winter if it's not raining, we use ours all year round, that's why I know.
Irene, do you remember yesterday, complaining again about me? Well, I got back to you saying where I was and it wasn't on WW, I was in Yorkshire so those who you believe are me are not, only way I can prove it if I send you a photo of my dated till receipt so if you let me have your email I will send you one.

Comment by: Cyril on 2nd March 2025 at 13:28

Living there you'd either have to love gardening or be like Alan Titchmarsh, and able to afford to pay someone to be the full time gardener, and all that grass would need a Kubota ride on mower like they use in the parks, or a few Pygmy goats.

Don't let them kid you Peter - a swinging hammock indeed, it's a spaghetti drying rack and every home should have one.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd March 2025 at 13:57

The wooden swing is to the right of the photo - in the corner - minus its shade/ cover to protect from the sun. It’s near the round evergreen bush .

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd March 2025 at 13:57

Mick , I doubt very much if your dated till receipt would be admissible as evidence in a court of law , as the prosecution would merely point out that the internet is accessible worldwide … even in Todmorden .
I assume that’s why it’s called the worldwide web .
Feel free to correct me if you think I’m mistaken .

P.S . Don’t you two think the time’s come to give it a rest ?

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 2nd March 2025 at 14:40

Colin, I fear your plea for moderation may have fallen on stoney ground.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd March 2025 at 14:51

Mick, Ozy is right....give it a rest. I really have no need to see your till receipt. Today's p-a-d is Colin's photo and all comments today should respectfully be relevant to that only.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 2nd March 2025 at 15:40

I just don't understand why people who comment on PAD don't use their own names with an add on if there are multiple people of the same name...my name IS Helen, I added 'of Troy' as someone was also a Helen on PAD. So come on folks use your names...and if you dont like a photo...you don't have to comment at all , you certainly don't have to be rude!
I await the brickbats !!

Comment by: T. D. on 2nd March 2025 at 17:40

I like the photo.

Comment by: Big Harold on 2nd March 2025 at 18:36

A neighbour's daughter-in-law told me this afternoon that when she needs her Aesthetics treating, she goes to this house and gets treatment from this lady, and she can also see the amazing Wigan view as she is being treated, She says she thinks her husband runs a bar in a Wigan village.
Irene, I think you and I should come up with a secret code so you know when it's me who you are falling out with and not one of the other people who are just out to cause trouble.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd March 2025 at 19:43

I do hope that last post under the name Big H wasn’t from you Mick . I really do .

I realise that it must be frustrating having some dipstick post comments under your name , but think about it … do you think that it’s helpful when you yourself post under multiple names ?

This site is already awash with more paranoia than you’d expect to encounter in a month on a psychiatric ward .

We’ve done till receipts and now we’re into secret bleed’n codes for Christ’s sake !
What next ? … illicit trysts at midnight behind the lavender bush ?

Wouldn’t it be far simpler to dump the aliases , …´cos they ain’t working ,… and just stick to Mick Byrne ?

I say this in the spirit of friendship … and also in the fact that I’m becoming a bit brassed off with it all .

It was never my intention to become involved in all of this bovine excrement … but I have … and now that I’ve said my piece you can go ahead and please yersel ‘.

All the best mate . Ozy .

Comment by: Arthur on 2nd March 2025 at 21:22

Helen of Troy hit it on the head at 15:40.
Why can't people use their real name or at least their full first name.

Comment by: John Noakes on 2nd March 2025 at 22:42

Big Harold (whoever you are), you're clearly making things up. Gill has her salon in the garage, with the window facing Wigan Lane. Your neighbour's daughter-in-law might see a view of Wigan as she is being treated, but it won't be that amazing view (which is of Haigh, not Wigan), it'll be a view of some hedges and the cars going past.
And her husband works in the construction management.
You're a loony.

Comment by: Mick on 3rd March 2025 at 04:25

Thanks Ozy for the very good advice, l will take it on board.

Comment by: PeterP on 3rd March 2025 at 07:28

On all of the WW Threads I use my 1st name and the 1st letter of my surname. You can go onto my profile page to see my last name but for those who cannot be bothered they sing about me every christmas and have done for the last 70 years

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 3rd March 2025 at 09:26

Peter P, I don't know how to go on to your profile page and am intrigued as to your last name! The only thing I can think of associated with Christmas is Peter Pan, (the pantomime), and I'm sure it isn't that! Please tell!! Or give us a different clue. xxx (no offence if you'd rather not!).

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 3rd March 2025 at 09:38

I must confess, I was apprehensive regarding what kind of disrespectful comments might have appeared for this photograph dreading that they might embarrass me and ruin my evening so did not look until this morning. So many thanks for keeping things civil.
Having seen the Ladies name mentioned which is correct she quite possibly takes customers into her kitchen conservatory at the back so that they may enjoy the view.
Finally, I am saddened to report that her husband passed away last Christmas so you can understand my apprehension.
Thank you once again, none of us are aware of individual circumstances and all the more reason to be moderate with our comments.

Comment by: Slippery Mick on 3rd March 2025 at 10:51

Irene, PeterP's full name, Christmas related, is Peter Pantomime. Or was it Peter Presents? I don't know, I've never heard of him.

Comment by: Mick on 3rd March 2025 at 11:13

Irene, think what might live in a pear tree.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 3rd March 2025 at 12:58

Colin well said I fully agree.

Comment by: PeterP on 3rd March 2025 at 12:59

Comment by: Veronica on 3rd March 2025 at 20:23

Peter P I bet you came in for a lot of stick when you were at school. Friends always come up with nick names ….mine was ‘KittyKat’. …instead of Catterall…

Comment by: PeterP on 3rd March 2025 at 23:25

My nick name was Phes short for Pheasant
