No.1 Library Street

Photo: Colin Traynor (iPhone)
Looks a lovely clear Spring day.
The Sky looks awesome with beauty in mind.
What lovely clean buildings and tidy Street.
It’s just the first of so many beautiful and interesting buildings on Library Street each individually designed and built many in Terracotta and Ruabon Brick with immense character.
Like King Street it is much quieter than the days when people would flock to one of the four Cinemas or the Hippodrome Theatre.
No Litter, No Graffiti, No Cars, No People and No Clouds in the sky. Heavenly.
Alone and peaceful in Wigan
Now, this photo takes me back to the late 1960s when this building was a bank, At that time, I was a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS). I was in a group of volunteers who trained to fight fires and save lives caused by a nuclear attack in Wigan if they ever occurred.
We got paid travel expenses that came as a cheque I had never seen a cheque before but was told to cash it in a bank, My day job was at Pem Caravans so when my dinner hour came, which we only got half an hour, I jumped on my motorbike and flew into Wigan looking for a bank, this was the first one I spotted so I went in and saw a good looking bank girl who gave me a nice smile as she handed me my money, I think she fancied me because she asked what the cheque was for and that I must be very brave to be volunteering for a job like that.
But I didn't have time for chatting her up and flew back to Pem just in time to start work again.
These days the street looks remarkably clean.
Yes the building is just one of quite a few dotted about that is and was the hallmark of Wigan and other similar towns.
I loved the busy streets of my youth in Wigan of years gone by with all its cherished memories. The town and its people.
( A bit over the top but true we had the best of times!)
That's a fantastic and beautiful building looks untouched too.
Very clean.
Why do these pregnant women need to get there babies scanned privately when you can get them done free at the hospital
I've just looked back 2 days to the pipe photo and the sky is just about the same colour as this one.
Good point Jack, there’s a private doctors opened directly opposite from Standish Medical Practice.
It might be difficult to get a doctor’s appointment on the NHS but I couldn’t afford to go in there for a consultation. And they say there’s no money about, clearly some folk have a bit of brass.
Nice bright picture by the way, this is how we like to see Wigan town centre, not a drunk, druggy or beggar in sight.
Jack your on the wrong site. Don't spoil it.
Ronnie, what’s your point? What colour do you want the sky to be on a clear sunny day, green, yellow, red or striped????
Nice "not" to see a barbers and junk food outlets.....and there is some.
That's a really good photo Colin, Wigan still has some good points.
John, in his comment, Jack is referring to the shop named "Baby Scan & Beyond" which is a prominent feature in the photograph, so his comment is relative.
Never really took much notice of this building before, probably because of where it is situated and not walking past it, however looking at the photo it seems that the facing has been cleaned at some point possibly using strong acids and steam which can take the top layer off, and it looks to be flaking in parts now. The town hall (old tech) was done like that leaving the ornate terracotta to become spalled with the weather, with quite a lot having to be later replaced.
Timothy Coop was certainly a busy man with building and running these buildings and businesses around town, and married three times too: https://www.wiganlocalhistory.org/resources/the-life-of-timothy-coop
I was out this morning taking a few photos and can confirm that although a Blue Sky is a rare occurrence in Wigan it is not unknown. So please expect a few more.
A bit of a funny happening today, I was walking back through Standish looking a bit weary when a van pulled over and the driver asked if I had had any Breakfast. Having said no, he gave me a sausage barm cake from McRobs.
Maybe he thought I was homeless but it was a kind thought and delicious! I must check my dress sense, I have a reputation to uphold!!!
I think the point that was being made, was no one commented on how nice and blue the sky was on the photo of the pipe crossing the canal.
The buildings in the photograph are numbers 1 - 9 Library Street, but only the building at the top of Library Street, number 1 Library Street, was a bank, the Midland Bank.
Big Harold
In the 1970s I had a motorbike, but unfortunately it couldn't fly, it had no wings :(
Did part of this building used to be an hairdressers,I think it was called Edmondsons.
That's a blast from the past Cindy, I do remember a barber all about there, noticed a few times going past when on a bus, did he later end up in the new, now old market hall, across from Bill's pet stall?
Veronica is Irene unwell? if so and you're looking in Irene, get well soon. :¬)
There is a very nasty cough and cold bug doing the rounds.
