A Little bit Of Wigan History

When I started work as a Junior Draughtsman at Rank Audio Visual's Seating Factory in Barn Lane Golborne in the 1960's, known locally as 'The Chur Works' we used to manufacture Stadium Seating with cast iron frames and timber seats and backs, this was before the advent of plastic seating in the 1970's.
I used to go and survey football stadiums up and down the country and draw up the plans prior to manufacture and installation. I remember meeting Bob Lord at Burnley and Bill Shankley at Liverpool.
This is a photograph of the seating still in place at Goodison Park soon to finish up as scrap when the stadium is demolished as Everton FC move to their new stadium at Bramley Dock.
I look at this photo a little sad, as if saying goodbye forever to an old friend.

Where's Poet, Rev David Long and Garry, not heard them for a while, they made some great contributions, hope they are well.
I've been going to goodison since the early eighties and still go yet.Happy memories for when we move.
Surprised they have not sold the seats to their supporters,More so the season ticket holders
End of an era, but look forward to the new stadium. Everton doing well since new manager took over.
Garry sent his best wishes at Christmas.
Man City Arling Haaland salary is for 9 1/2 years is £500, 000 per week. How can that be right in this present day with everything going on in Britain.
I've worked since 1980 and my take home pay now is around £284 per week for 5 days. Football has changed so much with many greedy people.
Overrated players not just Everton but all of them. And I'm not a Rugby fan.
My son came from New Zealand two years ago. He has always been an Everton supporter, so we all went on a tour of Goodison Park.
The guide took us around and rambled on about football being a great beautiful game, but then we got to the reception area where they had a dummy wearing another team shirt, the guide said we always change to shirt every week with a shirt of the next team that we are playing which stays on the dummy for a week.
Except the guide, who was female said when it Liverpool it goes on just before the game and comes straight off after it, why because we HATE then she said, I thought it's no wonder there is so much violence in football.
Alan, I was in touch with Rev David Long last year, for whatever reason he seems to no longer wish to engaging on WW. A decision although regrettable I suppose we must respect.
I'm full of beans thanks Alan . Very kind of you to ask .
I remember standing in the Gladys Street end once and was literally swept off my feet when the crowd surged after a goal .
A scary experience being completely out of control like a bit of wood in a raging sea . All Seater stadiums are certainly much safer .

"Why then wonder" - "look lately, then wonder no more."
Cheer up Colin.
Your old friend has stood up to the test of time and supported a lot of bums over the years.
It doesn’t help the site when ‘trolls’ under silly names come on here - let’s face it there’s a lot of those lately.. If people are genuine they would use a name and stick with it. Not everyone has the same opinions either in this day and age.
A very old and loyal supporter of 'The Toffees' from Wigin stated he had never had a bit of bother at Everton and always called for a nice pre match brew at the church buildings of St lukes, on the corner of Everton FC. Reasonably priced and very nice apparently.
Colin I worked out of ARC Collingwood Dock access was via Bramley Moor Dock deliverying Concrete 1988 onwards hopefully there will be barriers around the docs as there never was as far as I can remember.
I had a Season Ticket at Everton from 1962 until about 1977. Went to all the Home games, probably only missed half a dozen in all that time. Including all the World Cup Games and and a lot of the away games..
When Football was a PROPER GAME Nothing like a night game under floodlights on a cold winter night, Muddy pitches. Proper footballers Great times
Thank you Alan I'm fine.
I Still take my dog for a walk and it gets me out too. Your very kind, I'll toast a sherry later. Cheers and thanks.
Yes , the silly childish names really put you off contributing .
Nice to know your well Poet.
A rude comment by nail int coffin.
I'll put it down to lack of respect and education from you.
Another thing our guide went on about is how Liverpool football club wouldn't exist if it weren't for Everton letting them play on their church field a long time ago.
That's very true Colin. So pleased the Rev is OK.
Thank you for your feedback.
T.D. Yes, this seating has lasted more than sixty years, modern plastic seating although it has evolved into something much more comfortable with auto tipping seats they will never stand the test of time, especially if the plastic is Red!. Red plastic even if treaded with UV inhibitors fades very quickly in sunlight and become brittle, check out any stadium with red plastic seating and after a year or two they are a dusty shade of pink!.
Two companies joined the stadium seating market in the 1970's Restall and Pell from Birmingham, much cheaper and killed the market for cast iron and wood, its time had past.
I think there is still one company in Barnsley, Metaliform still catering for the low end of the 'plastic' stadium seating market, most of the better quality seats now come form Malaysia or China.
The days of cast iron and solid timber where numbered, RAV moved their factory from Golborne to the old Sovereign Toffee works in Lowton concentrating on Auditorium and Cinema Seating for Rank Odeon and Lecture Theatre Seating for Schools, Colleges and Universities, a big growth market in those days.
By 1975 teel was the new king over cast iron and solid beach frames gave way to plywood and chipboard. and new markets evolved in America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East which kick started my travels abroad.
By 1979 seeing the writing on the wall I left and eventually joined an American Seating Company in Maine as money mad accountants and investors from London took over RAV, the business was sold and faded into history. Both the Golborne and Lowton sites were sold off for housing development giving a quick return for investors. I think they called it 'Asset Stripping'.
Funny old world isn't but at least I have 60 years of memories to look back on as this photo testifies.
Veronica is correct, they are stupid and childish names. If you genuinely contributing nobody would be so silly to use name like they do, and to question other people. (and there's a few of them)
Sorry Colin, I'm not a football fan.
Ron, I think I stopped standing on terraces in winter when Platform Shoes went out of fashion. They let you look over the heads of them in front and insulated your feet against the cold concrete!
I wasn't there, but do recall a couple of Catholic chaps meeting each other on that field in 1966.
One was Eusebio and the other was Pele (proper footballers)
At Springfield Field Park everyone generally had their own place on the terraces .
I remember a little pile of bricks down by the Shevy End that were known as 'Billy's Bricks ' , on which the diminutive specky would stand every match .
No-one ever moved them . They were there for years .
I recall some great characters . There was a chap called Jumping Jack who got so excited he looked like he was on a Pogo stick . You could only see the top half of him behind the wall .
And a bloke we called 'Corner Ref' , who was famous for repeating this advice to the official .
A bobby used to do a lap of the pitch and when he walked behind the goals at the grassy knoll end , the crowd would whistle the Laurel and Hardy theme tune . The constable would start walking like Charlie Chaplin from one corner flag to the other , twirling his truncheon all the way .
I would class this as a little bit of Golborne (Warrington) history as, 'historically', Golborne has always been associated with Warrington. It even has a Warrington postcode.
Golborne is in Wigan Council, check which Council empties your bins, that will tell you. Garry's OK, Poets OK and Revs David is Ok.
Everyone is well.
I've no interest in football or any sport only horse racing.
Bolton westhoughton has wigan telephone code number 01942.
Golborne and warington don't mean anything. John Noakes.
Very interesting history. Thank you Colin.
John Noakes, you do have a point.
As I recall when in Golborne in the 1960’s I think that was pre-post codes but the address of Sovereign Works, Lowton was Nr Warrington as I think was the dialling code.
That said and in my experience, most people in Lowton would support Leigh and most in Golborne supported Wigan. And of course now both are in WMBC not Warrington.
And if you walk along that back road in Golborne alongside Haydock Park you are almost in St Helens but let’s not go there!!!!!!
I was trying to focus on a bit of the seating industry in the area not its post code or telephone code, they are irrelevant to the people that live there. Let the locals decide on that but thanks for raising this perhaps controversial issue.
Did Springfield Park only have one famous end named after a local village
Were there no beech hill, springfield and wigan ends ?
Tyldesley has Manchester post Code, but is under Wigan Council control.
Post and telephone codes can stay as they were before the 1974 reorganisation of Councils.
