The Beeches Standish

It became Woodlands lll a military hospital in WW1. I think at one time it was offices for the TSB and later became 'The Beeches' a popular hotel and restaurant.
After its sudden demise leaving many out of pocket, it was purchased, converted and extended at great expense to become the Albert's Restaurant we see today.

I must admit they have done a fabulous job in converting and extending the building, still retaining its character.
Interior and exterior finished to a high standard however, I’ve been twice but I’m not too keen on the menu, small portions and high price.
You wouldn’t see anything so elaborately built like that today. It’s stunningly beautiful. Built to last and certainly lasted.
Not too sure of the end bit. It doesn’t fit in to me somehow…from what you can see on the photo.
Saying nothing except nice photo, Colin.
I retired in April 2020 at the age of 72 just as Covid hit hard. It was two years later after the worst had passed before the company organised a retirement celebration at Albert’s for myself and my wife and a party of former colleagues came up from Wiltshire.
Staff and service was superb, we had a fabulous evening in Albert’s, just glad I didn’t have to pay the bill, I nearly dropped through the floor when I saw it!
Well it’s a lovely day today, we will venture out with bus passes to a far flung place and have a Freedom Breakfast in Wetherspoons at £2.99!!!
We have several fine restaurants in Shevington. The Juniper just to mention one.
Anon, no prizes for guessing who you might be.
Just Googled it and it does look really nice inside. I remember a few years back when it was a Sun Bed Salon. Looks worth a try.
A beautiful building and loads of space.
There's only one road to it, and a bad one too...traffic wise.
I can remember being here on a training course in early 70's when I worked at TSB bank.Visited fairly regularly when it was known as The Beeches.Haven't been to Albert's.
Veronica it's just an extension nothing to worrie about. A beautiful building.
I love the juniper your right it's a lovely place, the people are so nice and helpful.
Albert's cheerful tables perched on single tubular poles, fixed to the front of that splendid Victorian building are practical and look cheap.
Bistro Restaurant in Shevington is really good aswell, they have good parking too.
Veronica, there's nothing "elaborate" about that build. It's relatively basic and very much as you would build today. A simple design. Nice, but simple.
This building was used as an Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital during the Great War, I was in it until I died from blood poisoning on 16 August 1918.
I used to go back at night and walk around scaring the owners, and when it became a cafe I would pop out in the evening and shock some of their customers.
I did it a few times when it became Alberts, but I couldn't stand the noise of the rattling plates and giggling prosecco swigging common as muck hen party women.
I too just Googled Juniper, it looks really nice inside and a very good menu and good revo, not cheap but where is these days if you want something special. We will make an effort to go.
We are now sat in The Spinning Jenny, Bolton after a lovely picturesque bus ride from Chorley over Rivington, Horwich and Doffcocker.
Doffcocker, now that’s a name to conjure with!
To my eyes it is ‘elaborately built’ John especially when we constantly see Lego type buildings thrown up. My granddaughter went there celebrating her 18th birthday. I have photos of the girls inside of the extension Kath it looked nice. Expensive though I believe but what the heck you’re only 18 once.
Spinning Jenny in Leigh is now closed and has been for sometime.
PS. I just Google Doffcocker, there are some intriguing explanations as to the origins of its name.
Check it out for a bit of fun.
Digressing yet again, The Doffcocker Inn also has an interesting ‘must read’ history.
Doffcocker is mentioned in one of my favourite books, Colin.....When All The World Was Young, (a Bolton childhood in the thirties), by Edna MaCuish.
Colin, don't you mean the Spinning MULE?
Sad to hear of the blood poisoning and your horrible fate 'a ghost story'
Pipe tobacco smoke is rare these days, but the occasional second hand sniff of that distinct aroma brings owd Wiginers back to mind.
Some WWI veterans swapped to smoking herbs in later life. Doctors orders in the attempt to save failing eyesight and improve general health.
They have all gone now of course and are missing the ever increasing wiff of a different weed on the waccy, Wigin breeze.
Comrade may I suggest a new gas mask.
No spinning jennie in bolton but spinning mule.
You could be right John, my head was ‘Spinning’ after that rollercoaster of a bus ride!
I usually spin after a 10 pints too and forgetting where I am.
Irene says, "that's all I'm saying " at 07:42 lol....sometimes it's hard not to.
At least I said what little I said at 07:42 under my own name, Beefcake, so people knew who it was; I don't hide MY identity. There was a reason why I didn't say what I would like to have said re the photo itself. When I commented to Colin later at 13:44, it was about a book, not the photo.
Somebody can’t rest till he’s had a word with you Irene the signs are there as usual.
Ps I’ve read that book twice it was brilliant.
I don’t think a ghost from 1918 vintage would have recognised
“ a common as muck hen party of women” . I doubt women did hen parties then - in fact they didn’t even go in the men only saloon. They would more than likely have frightened any ghost off for good.
I was still attached to that building when it was called Albert's, and seeing hen parties, that's when it got too much for me so I asked to be relocated.
Is "Albert's" just a restaurant or did it reopen has a hotel ?
Pity the ghost didn’t speak in the vernacular of its time. Would have had no knowledge of
‘hen parties’ etc. ‘common as muck women swigging Prosecco”.
What's being said is the ghost was from the 1918s, but it was still around in our times, so it would have seen it all going on.
Twaddle !
Ps you sound like Mick/ Big H…have you been taking lessons?
In fact I would go so far as to say it’s just another alibi…you’re having a field day…
