Photo-a-Day (Thursday, 30th January, 2025)
Whelley Loop
No chance of me going on that Mick for maybe 4 months as stuck in hospital recovering from triple heart bypass and struggling to sleep in Tenerife ,hopefully Peter Walsh gets better,I may not use my iPhone for a couple of weeks as they are strict catch-up maybe next month.
A much better photo of the new path Mick. You can see the extent of the gradient the trains was up against that's obviously very steep. The heavy goods trains must have had bankers especially steam trains back in the day.
They've done a really good job with the new path but my concerns are offroad bikers racing up and down and a danger to members of the public. One Wigan Worlder mentioned the canal type barriers that would help stop the nuisance bikers taking over the path.
I do think its inevitable it will turn in to a race track. Sorry to be so negative and hope I'm wrong.
Perfect view of the long, straight path and no land slip.. . yet.
Ideal spot for capturing off road motorscrotes.
I don't know the correct word, but zig zag barriers is required to stop idiotic bikers and protecting people from dangerous very fast E bikes too, you can't hear them coming past you.
Very good photo Mick and the people who made it top marks, just needs barrier frames erecting though.
Many thanks to all concerns, a great job.
That looks a good path to have a walk along. Reminds me of the Pilgrim Path at Walsingham where we used walked the dog when we lived that way....as Peter P commented..... I think, this should be done to defunct railway lines, make use of them.
A frames or K frames are needed to stop motocycles, mopeds and E bikes from entering this beautiful walkway.
Looks fantastic, a great way to explore Nature.
Barriers restrict access for prams, wheelchairs, cycles and mobility sick etc.
Keep reporting illegal motor bikes and quad bikes so that the police can crush them under "operation handbrake"
It is a multi user path for everyone except illegal riders.
That photo reminds me of "perspective" in art lesson at school when we had to draw houses, roads, telephone lines etc going off into the distance. John (Howfen), hope you're feeling better soon, and hope you can keep up with looking at p-a-d even if you don't join in the comments for a while.
Same on “the line” in Standish. Numpty nuisance cyclists are a constant concern. Even responsible cyclists don’t use bells these days.
John I am very sorry to hear of your plight. I hope things improve massively for you. I thought you had gone quiet. Hopefully you are soon back home and pedalling along….xx
I love it!
But agreed bikers could be a real problem.
I'm sorry to hear about you having to have a heart bypass, John, wishing you a speedy recovery, which you should have because you are a fit and active person.
I'm just waiting for my recent scan results on an enlarged aorta.
Brilliant, we need signs going up about dog owners to clean up dog poo and remind them about fines.
But my other concerns are the much mentioned motorcycles racing up and down this fantastic walkway.
Barriers can't stop off-road bikers; they have them on the canals, and they still get on.
The only thing that will stop them is if the people who are sitting in their council houses know that the lad in their street is an offroad bike rider; they report them to the police, who will arrange to have their bikes crushed.
Martamillbill the Barriers work on the canal paths.
I would give that comment about people who are sitting in their council houses an answer if it was worth one. What an out-and-out snob!
Well said, Mick, that's what we need to grass these hooligans up instead of turning a blind eye.
Nice gradient and smooth surface for a soap box race.
Good photo.
'Enlarged Aorta' needs careful monitoring Big Harold. Scan results should be instant. Wishing all goes well, and a speedy recovery for John (Howfen) too.
All good wishes for a speedy recovery John. So a rethink on your lifestyle and no hectic pedalling then Mick, Obviously the off-roaders will be thinking that it was made for them to speed up and down on, and it will be ever so tempting for them.
John (H) So shocked to hear about your situation, this was certainly not the holiday you planned.
My wife had an accident a few years back in Gran Canaria and all I can say is that the hospitals care and attention was second to none. I have nothing but praise, I hope that your experience is the same and that before too long your back in the saddle.
I only commented the other day that none of us know what is waiting around the corner.
I'll drop you a line, in the meantime hope you are all coping okay. Colin X
It looks like the council have done a first class job with this Mick. I hope it is well maintained and looked after.
I believe they have done a similar job at Beech Walk, Standish, I'll take a walk down there when the weather gets a bit warmer.
You're not kidding, Colin....I was out for an anniversary meal at dinnertime and in A and E this afternoon.....we truly don't know what's round the corner!
I see Irene wants sympathy too lol.
Hope you enjoyed your dinner.
When the weather gets warmer, I'll make that my Spring walk.
Looks good.
Big dinners, cold weather and flying can all exacerbate heart disease.
Take care folks.
Try not to over indulge.....take you time.
It's a real shame the powers that be can't continue with this path up to the twenty bridges. The Viaduct is in need of structural repair but is possible with funding. It's a marvellous structural going to ruin.
You won’t need to block the road, sooner or later those trees on either side will start falling down and block it for you. At lease that’s what happened last time they repaired this track.
Yes, I did enjoy my dinner thankyou; it is what happened later that was terrifying, and is still ongoing. And I didn't post the comment it for sympathy.
John..I wish you nothing but good luck as well as good health.xxGod bless.
Any yobbos tearing down there on motorbikes will have a shock when they encounter the piles of mess left by horses.
Dog owners are expected to clean up their dog's mess, should horse riders have to clean up the mess left by their animals too?
Hope you're both OK Irene.x
Paul,don’t be so rude.
Black ink I agree, your spot on.
It was just me, Elizabeth, not Peter, and was nothing to do with the food, I can't say on here what it is but thanks for your concern. Thanks Maureen too for your support....I wasn't touting for sympathy as someone seems to think....I was just agreeing with Colin's words that we never know what is waiting round the corner. I hope our other Wigan World friends who aren't well will soon be feeling better.
Thank you Irene,I know you better than that ( re ridiculous suggestion that you were looking for sympathy) Take care love, hope you soon feel better.x
Irene you need a class of Garry's sherry, that will make you feel much better.
I once had a meal that made me ill for three days. Hope your feeling much better now.
Thankyou Arthur.....the meal was delicious and nothing wrong with the food at all; it was another matter altogether that caused the hospital visit, but I wouldn't refuse a glass of Garry's sherry!
You’re sounding more like yourself Irene. Never turn down a glass of Sherry from Garry. Strictly for medicinal purposes! As if!xx
