In The Year 2025

In The Year 2025
Beyond the trees, Harrogate Street 2025. People like me who lived in the area could at the time never have dreamed in a million years that this would have been the view today from Darlington Street 65 years ago.
They would have been stood outside the Post Office or Whitworth's Furniture Shop looking across at The Preston Arms pub on the corner of Harrogate Street.
Goodness me, the changes I have seen in my life time are phenomenal. Yet we still (As Predicted at the time) don't live on the Moon!

That former Police Station was ideal where it was based right there, next to the Court and close to Wigan Town centre.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd January 2025 at 08:07

Today is a brand new day with blue skies and frosty roofs so let’s put the miserable moods and weather of the last few days behind us.
Get your coats and hats on and go for a walk to blow the cobwebs away, that’s what I’ll be doing shortly.

Comment by: James on 2nd January 2025 at 08:53

I was going to say that we are still in a former slum area but I won't as it may upset some of us.

Comment by: DTease on 2nd January 2025 at 10:30

Have a walk round Platt Bridge Colin, but don’t forget your wellies.
Be sure to give the locals a cheery wave as they paddle around their living rooms trying to save what they can. I’m sure they will appreciate it.they may even give you a wave back!

Comment by: Big Harold. on 2nd January 2025 at 11:24

That man's got four feet.

Comment by: Robert on 2nd January 2025 at 11:27

A very disrespectful comment to all the people of Platt Bridge and Wigan area DTease, some are elderly people who can't go back home because their house's are flooded and other people too, not forgetting their cars underwater.
Hope you have a happy new year.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd January 2025 at 11:33

Just back from my walk DTease from the Plantation Gates over the bridge across the Yellow Brook and on to Mesnes Park via Bottling Wood and Coppul Lane.
Those people in Platt Bridge have my sympathy, they say a flooded home is worse than a fire to recover from. Main problem would be if they are not insured. They may not be in a mood to give a cheery wave, I feel for them.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd January 2025 at 11:41

We've just come back from Platt Bridge, DTease, as I had to go to the doctor's surgery.....we didn't know if we would be allowed through the barriers but we were, due to being on foot, but cars aren't allowed. It's heartbreaking to see peoples' homes flooded out, and also some shops. Iceland is flooded out but the Co-op , across the road from Iceland, is fine, being on higher ground. People call Platt Bridge but the people there have pulled together to do what they can, with St. Nathaniel's church offering food and drinks and people donating food and clothes to those who have been flooded out of their homes, and even taking people into their own homes.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd January 2025 at 11:45

That’s just what is needed Dtease..we never get photos from around there… I wonder why….
Well I have got mi hat and coat and my boots on so I’m off. It’s a pity I can’t send photos of W/H. For a change….. ;o))

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd January 2025 at 14:10

I didn’t know about the floods it’s usually down near Asda where flooding occurs. I hope the damage is not as bad as it sounds and people are back home soon.

Comment by: DTease on 2nd January 2025 at 14:49

Robert, my niece is one of those flooded out. With two kids I don’t think she is in the mood for a cheery walk at the moment. Nothing disrespectful to the people of Platt Bridge about my comment.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd January 2025 at 15:04

It's dreadful, Veronica....Iceland's car park was waist-deep last night and even cars were under water. The emergency services have worked all night but people in houses and shops have lost so much. But the locals who weren't affected have offered food, drinks, bedding and clothing via St. Nathaniel's church , and the Taz Mahal Indian Takeaway, which is situated away from the affected part, has offered free food for those affected. There still was no electricity this morning in some parts of Platt Bridge, on a freezing morning. They were working to get it fixed asap. We were only in Iceland on Tuesday.....it's unbelievable!

Comment by: Peter on 2nd January 2025 at 15:06

It's been on TV yesterday and today on North West Tonight about the floods up and down the North West, inparticular Wigan area.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd January 2025 at 15:11

Irene, it all sounds terrible for you have to confirm this, what a horrible miserable start to the New Year for those residents and businesses. As I said I hope that many are insured and that those that are not can be put up in The Premier Inn. After all Wigan Council can do it for the homeless and new arrivals. Locals are far more deserving.
What an opportune moment to show this photo. Hope some councillors are reading this!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 2nd January 2025 at 15:20

Veronica, I think that too W/H and other nearby towns and villages are of great interest to many.
There were no objections to John W’s exotic creature, it gave us all pleasure and a bit of a laugh.
Take your camera with you and give W/H WW status.

Comment by: Big Harold. on 2nd January 2025 at 15:36

I've also been in Platt Bridge Irene, I asked Paul, who owns the flooded-out bike shop if he wanted a hand in clearing up, but he said he was OK.
It was Treacherous out there on a bike today, especially on the canal bank, which was covered in frosty leaves.

Comment by: Paul on 2nd January 2025 at 15:45

Yes, BH, I can also see four feet.

Comment by: Peter on 2nd January 2025 at 15:56

DTEASE at 10:30 your comment WAS uncalled for.
Irene the traffic is flowing again now. Loads of police and fire service still there and water board officials and Electricity board. A real shame for everyone involved. A bad start to 2025.
Those poor people flooded

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd January 2025 at 16:11

I don’t watch much News from around the North West I have started watching Sky News lately. I don’t think photos of W/ H would go down well Colin it’s a Wigan Photo A Day.
If they are organising a collection in Wigan I would gladly contribute.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd January 2025 at 16:13

DTease, I never thought for one moment you meant to be disrespectful but just thought that perhaps you weren't aware of the situation. However, I am very sorry to hear your niece is one of those affected and I hope she and her children are okay. "Big Harold", Peter and I walked down to the doctor's this morning and as we were walking down Templeton Road, (opposite the stretch where the bike shop, Handyman's and Alan Poole's electrical shop are), a man passed us with a bike, (I'm not sure he was pushing it or slowly riding it), and I had the strangest feeling that it was YOU! I can't explain why, but I actually turned round to look at him after we passed him! I think he had a yellow coat on but can't be certain. I wonder if it WAS you? It was about quarter to eleven, I think.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd January 2025 at 16:16

I know there were forecasts for torrential rain but I didn’t see or hear it. Once I close the curtains I have no idea what is going on outside weather wise. Thank you Irene for sharing the news.

Comment by: Cyril on 2nd January 2025 at 17:09

Hats off again for Maureen O'Bern the 'silenced' councillor for Scholes and Ince, I've been told that she has been working tirelessly organising and helping out for residents at Platt Bridge, as she has done numerous times for other areas, remember what she does and voices for Wigan and districts, probably why she is disliked and 'silenced' in the Chamber.

Comment by: Thomas(Tom)Walsh. on 2nd January 2025 at 17:28

A little further (away from Wigan centre) down on the same side as photographer was where George Orwell stayed ,over the Tripe Shop, from where he betrayed the people of Wigan who welcomed him warmly . I know other people will have different perspective on The Road to Wigan Pier . I respect their opinion and hope I won't be chastised for expressing mine .

Comment by: Elizabeth on 2nd January 2025 at 18:00

Maureen O'Bern is a brilliant Councillor who 'does' rather than just talking about it.She is a credit to the town.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd January 2025 at 18:02

I don’t think for one minute Dtease was being disrespectful either. What a thing to say. His own niece must be in a turmoil.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 2nd January 2025 at 18:15

Tom (Walsh), you have as much right to your opinion as anyone and you certainly won't be chastised. Cyril, I have never in my entire life had an interest in politics and I have never voted because, in my opinion, there's not one politician or councillor to match another, but Maureen O'Bern is one special lady. She is an "actions speak louder than words" lady; she dives in at the deep end and actually does what she says she will do, rather than being "all talk". If I still lived in Ince she would have my vote. It doesn't surprise me at all that she has stepped in to help at Platt Bridge.

Comment by: Newman. on 2nd January 2025 at 18:31

Sky news rubbish too many advertisements not enough news.
BBC news the best and trusted.
BBC breakfast the best.
Praying for all the flooded victims.

Comment by: Mark on 2nd January 2025 at 19:10

Tom , more like inspired and enriched - I have grown because of you ! Where was my teaching at school to help me look at what Orwell said, to question , ask or doubt . I would make Orwell a compulsory read because he pushes something right into your face and asks you to make a choice yourself .
The irony of it is this Government is talking NOW ! About building a foundation?
Keep posting Tom

Comment by: John(Howfen) on 2nd January 2025 at 22:00

Harold why use a fake name, I offered Paul help yesterday after learning about the flood but he is too independent to accept anyone’s help what a decent man he is probably a friend for life.We have just got in after meeting my daughter for dinner at Wetherspoons and staying longer than we thought then having an exceptional meal at the China Room what a great day and then coming home to read PAD I feel so guilty after all the people suffering after the floods in Platt Bridge but I will be down there to offer my help tomorrow.

Comment by: John Noakes on 2nd January 2025 at 23:17

Cyril, Elizabeth and Irene. Maureen O'Bern is a councillor representing the residents of the Ince and Scholes ward. She should concentrate her efforts on representing those who put her in that position, rather than getting involved in other areas in activities that are not on her agenda. She is probably "disliked in the chamber" due to sticking her oar in where she's not wanted. She should be a credit to Ince and Scholes.

Comment by: Big Harold on 3rd January 2025 at 04:41

Howfen John, the plan was by posting incognito I would be safe from the nasty hurtful racist comments that I was on the receiving end off.

Comment by: Big Harold. on 3rd January 2025 at 04:47

Irene, it wouldn't have been me because I was wearing a reversible orange and black M&S jacket.

Comment by: Veronica on 3rd January 2025 at 09:45

John Noakes Maureen is a humanitarian - being in another district won’t stop her they are still
‘ Wiganers’ to her. I admire her as many do. I wish her all the best and hope she does well in everything she aspires to. She is a very genuine person.

Comment by: Veronica on 3rd January 2025 at 09:46

Changing names doesn’t change the person.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 3rd January 2025 at 09:48

Big Harold, I can't be sure what the man was wearing.....I wish I'd taken more notice now, but he was walking or "slow-cycling" down Templeton Road, looking across the grass at the the shops across the road which had been affected by the flooding, and I had a strange feeling that it was you. The coat COULD have been orange and black. Anyway, we'll never know!

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 3rd January 2025 at 09:54

Platt Bridge and Spring View are sub-districts of Ince and Hindley. Anyone who stepped in to help IS a credit.....to the human race. Maureen has a heart as well as a mouth, unlike many councillors. I'm sure the flooded-out people wouldn't have cared if she's landed from Mars, let alone Ince....she was there as a human being.

I can fully understand why some people hide their identity to post their comments but some as we know all too well, use this as a mask.
By all means express your views and alternative thoughts but please do not use your cloak of anonymity in an attempt to belittle others.
