A most peculiar arch over the doorway Dennis. Is that meant to be a Candy Cane?

Looks inviting

Great photo of the pub mate, one of the few left now, how times have changed. HAPPY CHRISTMAS to one and all, have a good one. To those who go to great lengths to provide all the great P a Ds Dennis, Mick, David,
Colin and John (fer knew yed city) and all the others who contribute from time to time 'many thanks' have a pleasant Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

A lovely well known stone pub building. Surely they could have found something more tasteful than ‘blown up’ Fr Christmas and Snowman and the entrance decor. I can’t stand horrible blown up stuff.

An attractive cosy pub in a lovely area, but I agree about the 'inflated' decorations.x

This site is a credit to all who read and contribute to it.
Merry Christmas everyone.
In my mind's eye I'm drinking a pint in the Balcatres - but it wasn't Marstons.

Merry Christmas Walt, Ray, ex Robert Baillie.

Used to call in there in the 70s when Sam Holden was the landlord, then nip across the road to the Red Lion. A very popular eatery back then?

Another belter Dennis once again.
I always say this: A beautiful place Aspull and is the envy of many people who live in other areas of Wigan.
I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas x

I second that Walt…….A very Merry Christmas to everyone including big Harold with a big smiley face.

Good photo, good health, best wishes and dont leave to many carrots out this evening folks.
There is only one type of deer that can be domesticated. Remember this if you find one in your garden tomorrow .. 'a reindeer is not just for Christmas' .

I agree Aspuller it's definitely my favourite area of Wigan

I remember Sam Holden too Dave Johnson. He was running the White Horse (next to C&A) before taking over the Balcarres, I think. A lovely welcoming photograph, which seems to invite customers in.
A very happy Christmas to everyone and may 2025 bring peace, good health and happiness.

The photo is of HAIGH and not of Aspull, besides we in Haigh when angling are not maggot suckers. That horrid red/white horseshoe, the gnomes and the nicotine addict stood outside the pub are not on.
Happy Hanukkah all.

Merry Christmas and no worries.
Rudolph and his mates.. don't eat carrots.

Comment by: DTease on 24th December 2024 at 18:45

And a Merry Christmas to you Bob. Let’s hope that you get the Black Dog off your back in the New Year.

Comment by: Cyril on 24th December 2024 at 19:32

Sam Holden did run the White Horse PatMc and a good landlord he was too, they put on some excellent pub lunches and the pub was always packed, even at night there was always plenty folks in, I can't remember if it was is sister or brother who took over when he left for the Balcarres.
Yes John, T D, Ray and Gary, Happy Christmas to you and to everyone and a Happy Chanukah, Bob.

The only joke I can ever remember (seeing as it's Christmas) is one my grandson told me - one snowman says to the other "Can you smell carrots?"
