Everyone's Favourite Building!

Everyone's Favourite Building!
The former Civic Centre building Millgate in the throes of rehabilitation, the scaffolding bedecked in more lights than the Christmas Tree in the Market Place.
There are without doubt many people who hate this building but personally it think it is one of the finer examples of 'Brutalist' concrete architecture.

It will be great when it's finished; I love the new wide smooth footpaths that have little ramps for disability scooters and pram pushers.

It may look ugly but at least it is going to be repurposed. You could have said the same about the police station which is now a thriving hotel

I don’t know how that horrible building can be improved. Perhaps some Vera Duckworth cladding might give it a bit of a classic touch. Demolishing it would have been cheaper.

I much prefer Christmas photos than buildings, especially this time of year.

PeterP, so very true about the Harrogate Street Police Station, it looks much better these days. I often wonder if you are asked when checking in ‘Which Cell would you prefer tonight sir?’
That was one example of ‘Brutalism’ that I did not like especially as it was not a ‘one off’ design and replicated in many northern towns.
I like Premier Inn’s, a few week back we stayed for two nights in Bury town centre, very comfortable and convenient for all the local amenities.

PeterP. The Police station was better located next to the Court, the then Police station had its own walkway for afenders from the station to the court.
A great thought and design.

Is 'Big Harold' yet another reincarnation of Mick??? Sounds like it

I think the old Police station served a real purpose where it was located.
When I say old Police station, really it wasn't that old before it was decommissiond.

Malc, watch this space, I am sure there will be quite a few Christmassy themed photos up before too long.

Malcolm, again cannot disagree. I think the unruly behaviour we see in the town centre and the deserted streets at night can be attributed to a lack of police presence.
They should convert one of the empty shops in the town centre into a local small police station to act as a deterrent. Seeing a policeman or police women walking in and out rather than driving past in a car would keep the unsavoury characters at bay.

Julie, I'm glad you said that because If I say anything I get pulled up about it. Thankyou.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 12th December 2024 at 12:31

I meant address my comment to Michael, not Malcolm. But doubt anyone would disagree about having a permanent police presence in the Town Centre.

Changing the subject completely. I don’t think I have seen a Hedgehog even a flattened one on the road in over twenty years. I know they should be hibernating at the moment but does anyone have any suggestions?

Comment by: Elizabeth on 12th December 2024 at 14:43

Yes,I thought so too Irene ! Veronica, you are right,it is a horrible building and I'm sure it would have been cheaper to demolish it.

Colin, Specsavers.

The ‘burning’ question from me is …..what will the building be used for? It looks as if it’s been extended.

I've never known Capital & Centric to do anything that doesn't involve housing. Maybe there'll be "workspace units" on the ground floor, but I'd bet on apartments on the floors above.

Julie…….Harold as well as those 2 odd balls on 22 of august are Mick why I don’t know as he’s well respected for being just Mick…..
