St Oswald & St Edmund Arrowsmith

St Oswald & St Edmund Arrowsmith
Located on Liverpool Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield the foundation stone was laid on the site of the old church in 1925 and opened in 1930.
It is said to be the only church of its kind north of the River Loire and considered as an architectural gem.
Its design is quite unique in England and designed and adapted with the grace and beauty of the French Romanesque style to be reminiscent of the Cathedral of St Font in Perigueux with the turret of pointed stones similar to those of Notre-Dame-la-Grande in Poitiers.

I gather Eddy had a hand in it.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 22nd November 2024 at 07:34

When I worked in Ashton on leaving school, (yes, as long ago as that!), I remember "the holy hand" of St. Edmund Arrowsmith" was kept in the church and was on display at certain times.

Comment by: PeterP on 22nd November 2024 at 07:48

I always knew this church as St Oswald's when was St Edmund Arrowsmith added to the church name?

Comment by: freddie on 22nd November 2024 at 08:34

if only the power of the church that funded this building 100 years ago could be directed into helping the poor and homeless in 2024

Comment by: WN2 on 22nd November 2024 at 09:18

You are right Freddie but this will not happen. The power of the church is channelled into protecting paedophiles not into helping the poor and homeless. As for the Government, I don't see it doing much either.

CARITAS..international confederation of RC charitable organisations and international groups dedicated to promoting peace, economic justice and human welfare. Just one of the charitable organisations that Catholics pay to. A lot of churches as we know are not as well attended these days.

Comment by: WN6 on 22nd November 2024 at 10:20

Seems to me that the more money given to all these charities over the years the less reliant they are, sit back and wait for more and the problem gets even worse. Time they got to sorting out their own mess.
I wouldn’t blame anyone for not giving, not even the church.
Charity begins at home.

Comment by: Veronica on 22nd November 2024 at 10:29

Ps it’s not just the Christian church where paedophiles have infiltrated there has been other institutions not to mention the internet.

Wigan folk are lucky to have this.

Good photo of a very unusual English church in the French Romanesque style Colin, and also some really interesting info from Veronica.

May I enquire is Quasimodo Sunday really the first Sunday after Easter ?

In "The Hunchback of Notre - Dame" it is said that Quasimodo was given that name because he was found as an abandoned infant on that day.

They gave Quasimodo a bell clanging job eventually. No health and safety worries if he was deaf before, or after for that matter as the story is supposed to be fiction.
Mind you.. I do beleive the actor Charles Lawton was a Catholic.

Does anyone know the true story of the real "Hunchback of Notre-Dame" ?

Comment by: Big Harold on 22nd November 2024 at 12:27

I got told off for riding my bike around this churchyard, but I can see they let some people drive their cars in.

Comment by: Cyril on 22nd November 2024 at 12:42

Good photo Colin, I've only seen it from going past on the road, though I remember seeing the Grotto behind the care home next door, a poster who came on here, Dougie, was a volunteer maintaining it.

Irene, here's a photo of the hand:

Cyril, thankyou so much but I'm lost with that! I know I have to press on the link and it encloses the writing in blue, and I can do that, but I don't know what to do next!

Comment by: Pw on 22nd November 2024 at 13:20

It look a very interesting building, the brick extension looks a bit out of place.

PS Cyril.....Our Jamie just called for his birthday card and showed me what to do..... GOT IT! Many thanks.

PeterP - Edmund Arrowsmith was one of The Forty Martyrs of England and Wales or Cuthbert Mayne and Thirty-Nine Companion Martyrs are a group of Catholic, lay and religious, men and women, executed between 1535 and 1679 for treason and related offences under various laws enacted by Parliament during the English Reformation.
He was Canonized 25th October 1970 by Pope Paul Vl. so I assume his name was added to St Oswald's after that date as the church had long held a Reliquary containing his hand previously in the keeping of the Gerard family of Bryn Hall
He was born in Haydock in 1585 and was executed in Lancaster Castle 28 August 1628 (Hung, Drawn and Quartered).

Comment by: Veronica on 22nd November 2024 at 13:43

Big Harold ( Mick) so you should have been told off for cycling around the churchyard I believe there are graves there. Cars are on the drives for people going inside church. The cemeteries where I live don’t allow cyclists.

Comment by: WN6 on 22nd November 2024 at 13:46

I don’t know about the authenticity of the The Hand’ but Colin’s conclusive fingerprints are all over this picture.

Comment by: Veronica on 22nd November 2024 at 14:39

We had four ‘ houses’ at school named after the martyrs. Edmund Arrowsmith, Edmund Campion., Thomas More and John Fisher. I was in ‘ Campion’.

This may ring a bell T.D. :- https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/41133/quasimodo-sunday-how-the-hunchback-got-his-name

So true Veronica, the evil ones always find ways to take advantage, and so cast their dark shadows over what was meant to bring about moral benefits to the world.

Nice one Cyril.

Trying to put our modern and clearly very fragmented democracy against thousands of years of faith is again for me a two sided coin .
The immediate example is the Archbishop of Canterbury . For me he knew it was so painfully wrong and he also knew how much it would damage his church , which is absolutely endowed within him to protect.
Also , within the very foundation of his teaching are the two acts which are fundamental to his ability to hear the message of God , which are forgiveness and repentance .
Our modern world wants to decide too freely with no time to consider and as such the Archbishops name now holds the word Disgraced ! This I will personally never hold against him simply because it’s easy to burn the witch , but harder to pause and try to understand, which now in our modern world , is pushing us each day ,further and further away from us trying to do that .

Cheers Colin I left "BLESSED "Edmund Arrowsmith School in 1969 and the church was still then St Oswald

Comment by: . Ozy . on 22nd November 2024 at 19:39

Having imbibed one or two Carlsberg specials over the recommended quota at the Bay Horse one particular evening in 1970 , I somehow managed
( for reasons I’m still at a loss to fathom 50 odd years down the line) , to scale the walls of this place , before toppling over to join its permanently checked out occupants .

I recall sleeping peacefully among them , quite undisturbed until a light dusting of snow in the early hours aroused me from my slumbers .

The bright morning light , the alcohol induced headache and the realisation that I had to be at work at 7 a.m. set me scuttling off down Heath road and over the plant to Golborne .

I spent the rest of that day driving a Guy Invincible tipper around Yorkshire still dressed in my slightly crumpled posing gear , complete with ‘ kipper ‘ tie .

Comment by: DTease on 22nd November 2024 at 20:23

Ozy, considering that the Plod generally have a 50 year backlog you should expect your case to come up just before Christmas.
P.S ho no Ozy not the kipper tie!

Comment by: . Ozy . on 22nd November 2024 at 21:20

A wagon driver wearing a tie ( of the kipper type or otherwise ) would have been an uncommon sight in 1970 I should imagine DTease , as the dress code back then consisted of either a grease covered boiler suit , or if one felt the need to impress , a second hand Wiggin corporation bus jacket , donated by one’s older brother .

So I’ve often wondered over the years whether I was spotted by a young , ambitious , innovative haulage entrepreneur , and purely by accident became the unwitting model for Eddie Stobart’s future workforce .

Oops ! … the cat’s fallen asleep on the back of the chair and just slipped off .

Comment by: DTease on 22nd November 2024 at 22:00

Ozy, have you tried using cushions on your chairs?

If you had walked around with your hands in your pockets, wearing your tie and carrying a clipboard everybody would have taken you for management.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 23rd November 2024 at 09:18

Ozy and DTease, you are a real double-act and have had me in stitches laughing with your exchange of banter. Pity your comments came on so late and many people won't have seen them. I remember you in the seventies, Ozy, though not as early as 1970. I still love a Carlsberg Special but I don't think you can buy it in pubs now....mine are from the "offy".

Comment by: Veronica on 23rd November 2024 at 11:06

I bet St Ozy is shaking his head at these two Irene. Especially with Ozy being part namesake!

Comment by: DTease on 23rd November 2024 at 12:53

Irene, I had intended to make a comment about Ozy’s ‘Posing Gear’, but the vision that came to mind of Ozy wearing nothing but a posing pouch and a kipper tie quite put me off the Prato Pie that I had been looking forward to all day. Besides, anyone under the age of eighteen could be damaged for life if confronted with such a image at such a tender age.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 23rd November 2024 at 15:42

I love your humour, DTease, and I know Veronica does too.....you and Ozy are a real double-act! It's a shame Ozy tends to add comments quite late as many people don't see them. The bit about the cat falling off the back of the chair was hilarious! Thanks for a good laugh....it has kept me going through this awful miserable day!
