George Formby. Faded Glory.

George Formby. Faded Glory.
He started his working life as a jockey, made his name on the stage and became a famous film star, now his photo adorns a wall on a back street off Standishgate. Such is life.

Why is the picture/plaque tucked away in a side street when his statue is on display in the grand arcade?

Fame is very brief in todays world...these so called Celebs on programnes such a Strictly Come Dancing will be forgotten in a blink of an eye.
Ask anyone of not to young an age about George Formby & they will find him somewhere in the back of their minds. He was a 'real' entertainer.

I'll wait a while to see if my comment appears...seems the gremlins are at work this am !

Is there not a similar photo on the FRONT of the pub as well? I would like to think so but just googled photos of the pub and there doesn't appear to be one....what a shame! There IS a blue plaque on the wall as you drive up Central Park Way , near to where Westminster Street, (where he was born), once stood.

If this is where I am thinking it is, it would be on the back wall or the gable end of the pub on Marsh Lane leading down to Water Street.

Perhaps they are running out of walls?….
I can’t say I was a fan of George he was very much of his time though.

Often walk past the house George lived until his death in St Annes. George bought the house from Josef Locke in 1952. George's youth was spent #8 Westminster St Wigan. Off Greenough St. Reputed to be the highest paid entertainer in his time. There is also a statue of George in Douglas I O M. Turned our nice again an't it. Good photo Kemo Sabe, just enjoying a spot of sunshine on Malta.

Lucky Walt, our favourite town is Mdina, just beautiful. Is Popeye Village still there?

The website of the George Formby Society, for anyone who appreciates his music and his films, there is also a link for those who wish to join the society. Within the history section there's a very interesting read detailing the true life of George, along with his family from humble beginnings to Rolls Royces and mansions, there are also many other interesting reads within the past issues of The Vellum.

Irene, I've had a look on google maps and the pub does have a large hanging sign at the front, and with the same image as in the photo by Dennis.
Well done George, I very much doubt that I shall ever appear on a pub sign.

Thankyou Cyril.....I'm glad to hear that. I could only see small photos of the pub and couldn't see the sign.....perhaps they are old images that I saw and the pub front has since been updated. I rarely go along that stretch of Standishgate, (in fact I only go to Wigan for blood tests these days!), but when I worked at Debenhams in the 1970s we used to go for our dinner there, but it was The White Horse then; they did a lovely Ploughmans-and -chips!

A ploughman should never be served with chips.

Comment by: Cyril on 5th November 2024 at 19:33

It was Irene, and in fact for many years the White Horse was famed for their Ploughman's Lunches, the Market Hotel was another town centre pub that did an excellent lunch too, being famed for pies and gravy, though I was told that they had other items on the menu too, but you had to ask.

Colin, walked around Mdina, Rabat and Valletta a few time over the many times we have visited Malta. Yes, Popeye village still open for business. I look at PaD every day no matter where we are its great to see all the fantastic pics you guy's put on WW.

I don't really get what the 'Faded Glory' comment is about ?

I think it brightens up Marsh Lane, which the name of that back street.
