The Carbuncle

The Carbuncle
When I first saw the scaffolding my hopes rose that they were going to pull the thing down, now I’m not so sure. It looks like they are going to make another attempt at making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

It would make good accommodation for asylum seekers, and that would be a feather in Wigan council's cap with the government.

The first thing that came into my mind when I saw it was "Prisoner Cell Block H", and It wouldn't look out of place on that programme that comes on in the mornings, "Abandoned Engineering". Peter watches it but I don't....the dreary buildings make you feel depressed, just like that monstrosity,

I think you’re right Dennis. A ‘silk purse out of a sow’s ear’. Perhaps artificial brick cladding to finish off. It’ll do nicely for ‘sailors seeking solace.’ It’ll match the artificial ‘Ye Old Ship’ pub next door…. Who knows - whats next?

What is the building used for ?
It is the style of once popular Brutalistic (?) Architecture....all grey concrete , angles & block like..in short a grey concrete block that doesn't enhance a town in anyway, shape or form...excuse the pun!

I believe that because of the amount of asbestos in it that it's not economically viable to pull it down so looks like we're stuck with it. No doubt it will just have a load of cladding or render thrown on and be rented out or used as council offices.

It was council offices and it is being repurposed for work/studio units

The sentence for permitting the fitting of any bench facing a carbuncle, should be a wet weekend in Wigan...sat on one.

It's going to be lovely when it's finished.
Something that modern Wiganers will be proud of.

Some people are never happy unless it’s in Red Brick, Terracotta or Mock Tudor.

God help anybody using the inside with what could be breathed in….in response to ‘T’s’ post if true.

How lovely it will be to finally have it lanced....Rock on!

The 'seekers' can't have council accommodation.

I had read something online that it was to be renovated for a multi-purpose use. Though in an article by Northwest Place and looking at the artists depiction a bit of green paint doesn't really transform the building, but thankfully it is to be used rather than become derelict.
Here's a link to the article.

I wish someone like Desmond Morris could explain to me , why I feel so emotional about Wigan and its changes , why I am so concerned , even though I left more than thirty years ago ? Is it like the first love you never forget or the fear of cutting the thread of your roots that made you who you are ?

Mark .… you live somewhere down south … right ?
Somewhere in the London area most likely I’ll bet … eh ?

Well .. best of luck with that one pal .
I’ve been there … on numerous occasions , and it stinks .

Mind you , it doesn’t stink half as bad as Wiggin does .
So stick with it mate … you ain’t missing anything up here owd lad .
Wiggin isn’t anything like you may remember it mate … I’m telling you that much for nothing .

But that said … where is these days ?

Not only towns are losing their identity and character WE are as well… with the ‘ unholy trinity’ in charge it can only get worse.

I fear that the damage to this Country is already done and we are gathering speed down the slippery slope to a third world existence.
Sooner or later the rest of the World will realise that we have no desire to work our way from under the mountain of debt that is piling up over our heads and they will refuse to finance our self inflicted end.
Can our new Government pull us back from the brink? Will they be able to put on the brakes and save us from plunging headlong into the abyss?
I am sure that they see the enormity of the task, but I fear that we are already too far gone.
We have made too many mistakes and too many bad decisions and we will be leaving a bleak future to the next generations that follow us.

Accepting personal
‘‘ freebies’’ from certain quarters doesn’t help either. Nobody gives money away for nothing even if they’re rotten with money. All that scenario should be stopped. It seems those at the top are in it for themselves. What good is that for the country? Hypocrites in charge no less.
