Dangerous Corner
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-HX99)
I played guitar in there a couple of times in the early seventies. They used to run a folk night.
Now thats a name I remember well, I wonder why ? My Mother was in Wrightington Hospital being treated for TB in the late 1940s but would I have known the name because of that...as my sister & myself were not allowed to visit her.
, so couldnt have travelled along the road.
The things that puzzle the mind !
Was it really a ‘dangerous corner’ there must be a reason it was called Dangerous Corner?… often wondered why.
There's a good little Cafe that serves brilliant breakfasts to the right of this pic, Thirsty & Co. Good photo Dennis
not from that part off wigan but always thought randells corner was knicked named dangerous corner but some one will let me no
Exciting tourist attraction courtesy of local authority.
The amazing traffic sign on 'dangerous corner'
Good photo Dennis.
Veronica. The story my parents told me is that there was once a funeral for a well known bad tempered woman going past there. As it rounded the corner the horse slipped and the the coffin fell off the hearse and burst open. To everyone's surprise the woman sat up alive and well and glowering at her husband who commented " I always knew that was a dangerous corner" Other explanations may be available !
If only that was true Carolean …just shows how legends start.
There’s probably multiple reasons and stories but that’s a good ‘un. .;~)
Dangerous Corner was always in Appley Bridge. Have they moved it?
Carolaen & Veronica in a book of my Father's dated 1914 titled "Wigan Town and Country Rambles" in the section our villages -Wrightington there is a comment about Dangerous Corner and the story connected to it as Carolean indicated but the ending goes on that the some time later the wife 'sickened and died' and as the funeral procession approached Dangerous Corner the farmer husband said " now, my lads, be careful you don't knock her ag'int corner this time"
If I remember correctly in the late 50's early 60's the Ribble "cross country bus " as we called it stopped by the Dicconson Arms en-route to Parbold and beyond.
Isn’t Dangerous Corner in Appley Bridge?
I drove past there a few weeks ago and noticed the shop just to the right of the dark car once sold curios and ladies clothes.I remember the Giraffe which occupied the right hand corner of the building
Another good shot of a well known pub, I think now more of a restaurant. Last time I went in it was Tapas.
I think it is called dangerously corner because the trying to cross from Appley Lane North over to Robin Hood Lane over the main road from Wrightington Hospital to Parbold Hill is a slight dogleg not straight across.
Even now you really have to have your wits about you, if the road either side is not clear it’s like Russian Roulette!

WN1, that cafe opposite you mention is quite good. Not sure if they still have the shop alongside selling all manner of strange things.
About 10 years ago we called in and I was tempted to buy a six foot black gorilla to stick in the bushes at the bottom of my garden, then on second thoughts I wondered what the reaction would be driving home with it strapped on the roof rack.
You don’t see many of those driving through Standish!
It’s address is 206 Appley Lane North, Appley Bridge.
Robert’s irate, yes I think you're right. People just say "Wrightington" when they think of it being near to Wrightington hospital. Ironically, Wrightington hospital is also in Appley Bridge.
Dennis maybe a quarter of a mile further on is Fairy Glen which seems ever so popular with the amount of cars parked.
Barrie. Now that you say it I'm sure that bit of the tale was also added on to my parents story. Funny how things come back after over 60 years since I first heard it.
