Correction, we are not just giving rides to children, adults can also take rides all as we ask if you can afford it is to put some loose change that you may have in our collection box.
How many of us as children and then our grandchildren have ridden on that train on a Sunday afternoon. The joy of that has never left us.
It’s one of the simple pleasures in life and a lovely ride through the woodlands particularly when it’s sunny.
It’s been running for as long as I can remember, long may it continue.
Just wish the tractor was still running, not easy to get to Haigh Hall these days without a car.
Not wishing to take up yesterdays comments but what is the Communications Board, I’ve never come across it,
With Freedom Of Speech comes responsibility and it should not be abused at the expense of others, particularly those who take pleasure in engaging with WW.
All alternative views and opinions welcome but please express these in a kindly manner and with a little more thought for others.
That’s my opinion for what it’s worth.
Muck Rag, thanks for pointing that out.
When I was little my mum and dad used to ride with me , wind the clock forward and when they were in there late 70’s I took them for a ride on you train, they loved it. I have also over years been on with my son and then grandson. Your dedication and enthusiasm in keeping this going is very much appreciated.
I’ll be back soon!
I remember as a kid going on seventy years ago, watching them work on those trains for hours, before getting a ride.
It was always worth the wait.
Kids come in all sizes Mucky rag, and the big kids seemed to be as keen to get on for a ride as the little kids!
That train must be powerful taking all that weight… grownups are still kids at heart!
Is that Wolfie Smith hitching a ride ? ' Power to the People ' .
Colin T on the headline banner there is PAD and use your curser to your right 5 places is communicate but you have to be a member of WW to post any thing not like PAD were any one can post comments
A good photo Dennis, always reminds me of Riding on a Train the very catchy song by the Pasadenas.
This is a replica of 4-6-2 Coronation Class Pacific Duchess of Hamilton. Designed by Sir William Stanier FRS and built at Crewe works in 1938 and finally withdrawn from service in 1964.
Its shed was at Crewe North (shed number 5A but shed plate missing from the front of the firebox). It would have frequently passed through Wigan in its career as it operated on the LM&S West Coast route between Euston and Scotland. All Wigan trainspotters in the early 1960’s would know this but non trainspotters may still find it of interest.
The Caledonian plate on the front is simply the name of the journey. This is the London Euston to Inverness sleeper service.
This is my type of picture. Far better than, say, a squirrel or some pigeons which could be anywhere.
Interesting photo Dennis, does the narrow gauge railway with carriages not run anymore? That was an enjoyable ride through the trees. Colin plenty folks have said the same about the tractor, and it was hopefully going to start running again, though after the main gate lodges on Wigan Lane had been renovated, maybe they're now waiting for when the hall has been fully renovated too.
We have one on the Wirral called Royden Park Miniature Railways which is similar and run by the Wirral Model Engineering Society.
40 odd years ago we took our son on the Haigh Railway as its called now, when he was 5/6 years. We just watched. I'm glad to see it stills operate and brings joy.
Still got a railway in Worden park Leyland
