Having a car was so alien to us back then but the good thing was we all had a front garden .
We would play football on the grass at the front , now gone . Then sit under a gas lamp on the kerb waiting for the call . Completely different mind set for me this . I hope the young children born here and playing here , will hold and cherish the feeling of their street , just as much as I do , 70 years on .
how many of these houses are classed as affordable/social houses?
Wherever I go I see new estates being built the majority of the houses are detached<g> well what is these days classified as detached i.e. 2 ft between you and your neighbors house. Priced at over £300,000 They all have two cars on the drive WHO is buying these houses???? Everybody can't be on MEGA wages.
This view could be anywhere in the country.
The only variable will be the price.
Affordable homes? The price of materials and the hourly rates of labour will determine the price. The politicians, usually in opposition, demanding "affordable" homes are actually asking for a subsidy _ from the rest of us.
No easy answers regarding housing in the UK.
That type of house in parts of Nth Norfolk would cost much more then £300,000.
And I do notice that the 'affordable ' properties are tucked away on the least attractive parts of estates....also by the time the estate is finished the number of ' affordable' properties seem to have been reduced reduced considerably.
They could have put 4 nice terraces on that site . All new building should be terraced dwelling only to address the housing shortage .
I whent this scool did not learn much then i got married earley.
Houses far out of reach for young people even if they have excellent jobs.
Where I live some are given over for rent to single women with x number of children - bang in the middle! That’s no lie!
Ron Hunt, actually the only detached homes in this photo are the two white buildings framing the right and left of the shot. All others are semi or terraced homes, maybe wherever you go you need to go to specsavers first
Does anyone remember Abraham Guest. He lived at the top of Orrell Mount opposite the library and I think was a credit trader and called on people in Roby Mill where I lived in the 1940's. He was a prominent councillor hence the school named after him.
freddie did I say detached houses on the photograph??? I was referring to new housing estates in general..
Bland, lifeless and gloomy. Not a place to bring kids up in. £300,000 worth of dreary living.

Many new so called ‘affordable’ properties be they houses or flats are bought up before they even come on the market and then rented out at exorbitant rates or appear on Air B&B. Scandalous!
Why do motorists selfishly park up on pavements, don't they realise that they are blocking off the safe route of working dogs leading their blind owners, or folks in wheelchairs and mothers with prams. Folks then have to risk life and limb going out into the busy roads to get around these vehicles.
The vehicle in the photo is typical of pavement parkers, there'd be no obstruction to other vehicles if parked up fully on the road. Laziness also comes to mind and looks as they just want to be two feet, 0.6096 metre closer to their front door, even if causing hazards to others.
Haven't been past here for a while, so thanks for the photo Mick.
It is good that the former school site was used for housing, but an application for extra care apartments was thrown out, and yet this application with the promise of £hundreds of thousands£ for play park and education improvements in the area was passed, with one councillor calling for more chimneys on the roofs?
He won't be happy when he sees the finished houses with no chimneys.

It's good too that they left those mature trees leading to the entrance of the school in place, as they now help to give a distinguishing look to the estate.

Married with two young children I decided to go to night school at Abraham Guest in the 1980s to do my 'O' levels. Enjoyed every minute. Good days.
