Mesnes Park
Through the foresight of the Victorians aren’t we fortunate to have such a green oasis so close to the town centre.

The park is looking lovely. A very nice view today. I am glad it’s looking well mowed and maintained in these cash strapped times. Not many folk about.
Yes Colin , that is a wonderful green space for the public to enjoy. Long may it remain so & no idiot decide it would be better if it was released for building.
That's a fine shot of a place I remember well. [:D]
A constant in a changing Wigan. It has hardly changed since my childhood and even before that , going off old photos.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before..I was once talking to a man who’d been in the Royal Navy ,he said that he’d seen so many parks on his travels but ours was the most beautiful, but we all know that don’t we.
Another great photo Colin hopefully weather will be so kind tomorrow on the Manchester to Blackpool ride I’ll be looking out for a man with a knotted handkerchief on his head when going through Standish or maybe a big umbrella take care young man.
It was a perfect morning for a photo such as this, I had been in the Covid Memorial Garden which is also lovely and quiet. Dennis posted a picture some time back when it first opened. Now it is in full bloom and the circle of trees around make it something special.
Being secluded I think very few even know it’s there yet just across the road from the Market Hall on the old Grammar School cricket field.

All the sailors I have known leave there ships and go into the first bar outside of the dock gates.
That’s me on my scooter with my mam and dad . My dad had just picked me up to rub the shoe but to be honest I didn’t think much of it as there was no sweet at the end of it , I did though later get an ice cream so maybe that was for the shoe ? If that’s the case I think I will remember the shoe man .. My ice cream , by the way , had a flake inside as well and I enjoyed it very much .
Perhaps the sailor had already visited the Park Hotel Popeye…then wandered through Wigan Park delighting in the lovely floral displays.
And then going in the Cafe for a strong black coffee to sober up before sailing off into the sunset.
Aww, that's lovely, Mark. My Dad held me up to rub the shoe in the 1950s. I held my children up in the 1970s and 1980s and my son lifted my grandchildren up when they were small. If , like me , people have to have regular blood tests at The Linacre Centre, if you end up in the room at the back, you can see people walking in the sunshine in the park through the window....it takes your mind off the procedure!
When I see Wigan Park I know my soul is part of it !
Then I see Tony Blair at billionaires weddings , feeding his ego of self and gulping it up as he feeds himself to climb higher up the mountain, and then tells us what we ourselves are doing wrong !
