Photo-a-Day (Saturday, 22nd June, 2024)
Market Place and Standishgate
Photo: Colin Traynor (iPhone)
Do you remember when we were young teenager used to meet up at Wooly’s railings? Wrangler Jeans and Ben Sherman shirts.
A ghost town
Looks like the benches have been changed around. It’s looking quiet ( apart from the singer…I doubt much money willbe earned.) It looks tidy anyway. I have missed Wigan as it was with the main stores.
Many, many years ago whilst on holiday near Great Yarmouth I had to be taken into hospital and the procedure I needed required a general anaesthetic. When I came round they had put metal cot sides on the bed for safety reasons and in my woozy state I thought I was by the railings outside Wigan Woolworths! There's no place like home to a Wiganer!
That's a lovely photo of Standishgate and, looking at it, it's easy to imagine that Marks and Spencer and Debenhams are still there; sadly, we all know that's just an illusion.
Some days are busier than other’s although I do admit Wednesday used to be ‘Half Day’ closing now it looks more like ‘All Day’ closing.
So, the question is Colin, is it a Spaniard playing an acoustic guitar or a busker playing a Spanish guitar.
Then again, it could be a Spaniard playing a Spanish guitar.
I see no singer, Veronica, or Spanish guitarist Colin.
Tommyt - I think he said his name was Andrés Segovia Torres, 1st Marquis of Salobreña but I am quite gullible.
So in the words of Mavis 'I don't really know'.
Good shot Colin are you sat on the bench or taking the photo, I would like to think it will be so quiet at Windsor as we are driving there soon for a couple of days to visit the chapel.
Cavatina or Recuerdos de la Alhambra . And a San Miguel . Sorted . Cheers Colin .
Irene, just to jog your memory further, I have just put Woolly's Railings back up on The Album Recently Commented. Not that I wish to remind you of a hospital bed in Great Yarmouth.
John (W) no not me on the bench but I do know that young person walking down Standishgate with the walking stick. Enjoy your time in Windsor despite the hoards of tourists, many years since I've been there and took a sail on the Thames.
George (Hindley) that's because as I said from the outset, he is on the other side of the road out of shot in 'La Plaza Del Mercator'.
I did take a picture from Woolly's doorway with him in the picture, I'll send to try to get it uploaded but it cannot be guaranteed to feature.
Was it this guy??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgXAffJs_fU
I went to see him at the old Southport Floral Hall back in the early 1970's BRILLIANT
Like it Colin, I've listened to Segovia a few times but I found that sort of music a bit boring. Thanks for the pic.
Cheers Colin we were in Windsor last year but the chapel was closed so we had to book this time, also we enjoyed a trip on the Thames in a duck(bus) was busy but not overwhelming, hopefully we will all get together soon.
Well Colin, I thought it a nice photo. Reminded me of a Wigan I once knew long ago.
I tell you what, it looks pleasantly quiet compared to this morning when we had to fight our way along the narrow pavements of Station Rd in Sheringham !!

John , if on your travels you come to London (again ) go to a pub called the White Cross in Richmond not at the weekend mind you , especially if the weather is nice . It’s directly on the Thames and you and your party will greatly enjoy it . Check it out online if you can , it’s a lovely place to enjoy a meal , drink as you relax and watch the wide Thames go by you - again not at the weekend , as it will be packed !
PS Boats stop at the White Cross , where can book and have a meal as you take a trip down the Thames .
Enjoy Windsor John , hope you and your party have a lovely day . Let us know how you got on .
It’s China now Helen- check your Made in ! We should be making that !
Don't believe him he's not Spanish, he's a Romanian and most of the music you daft Wiganers think he's knocking out is really coming from a compacta discus player.
Thank you Dave I will check the White Cross out, just me and the better half this year we certainly enjoy London and stayed at Premier Inn Blackfriars a couple of times had a boat trip to the Thames Barrier and hoping to walk over the O2 Arena next time.
Dave just checked the White Cross out and I’ve sold and delivered several HGV’s not to far from the White Cross on Chertsey Road, Feltham amazing.
A place for old men to sit and dream of how it used to be in their day…
Maybe that’s me Veronica.
