Summer Time - Haigh
You can reach right up and touch the sky... but don’t forget your brolly!!

You might be stood in Haigh, but you're looking at Aspull across the road.
It's wet wet wet reminds me of that Scottish band called wet wet wet.
What’s occurring there?
I love that part of Haigh ..the thought occurs to me if those buildings were in Scholes they would have been pulled down.
My first impression of this was that I thought it was a post of an old Lowry painting. Until I saw the car. I agree with Veronica - suprised they have not been pulled down.
The words as quoted are fine but farther along this Mungo Jerry song is extremely sexist. A big hit circa 1970 but doubt it would be aired today. On a different note it was the beginning of the genre known as Jug Music which did not last long.
I read in the Sunday Times that Haigh was listed as one of the finest places to live in the North of England. Not looking at this view from Copperas Lane, it looks quite run down and depressing.
A picture of the Balcarres Arms on the left or St David's Church on the right might have been better.
Summer's working from home this year .
From the outset, thanks Dennis for your picture, they are always appreciated, hope you didn’t catch chill. It’s been a bit hit and miss this month.
However I can’t disagree with WN6 although I the think the Times said ‘Desirable’.
I don’t go very often but do like The Balcarres Arms, they serve great food in there and in my experience a great mix of locals with no pretensions.
I do think the Red Lion with its restaurant is a great loss, we got engaged in there over 50 years ago.
Now a block of apartments bringing no economic benefits to that part of Haigh.
Over the last 9months we’ve had Autumn, Winter and Autumn again. Summer is suffering from long term memory loss. She’s forgotten to come here. We might get two summers yet in Autumn and Winter. Who am I kidding!
Poet, where is Summer living these days? Perhaps she would let me sit in her garden for a bit!
Those houses look fine when you see them. It just looks drab because of the rain.
Very nice too Dennis despite the pedantic comment from the usual one.
I used to go to Haigh Post Office to pay bills and to renew the vehicle road licence, it was very quiet so no trailing into the street long queues as there was at the Post Office in Hindley, along with grumpy assistants. You would be served at Haigh PO with a smile and a goodbye, and it was a sad day for the local folks when it closed.
Haigh is lovely, incidentally Hindley Market Street PO still has a certain assistant who is far from pleasant.
There's nothing pedantic about being correct Cyril and regardless of what you, Veronica and WN6 say, that terrace in the photo is not in Haigh, it's in Aspull. Colin, the Red Lion was also in Aspull.
Good photo Dennis.
The sets still in place from the church to the road, a reminder of another time.
The former rev lost four sons, in the space of fouteen months, during WW1.
From -The Great Push - by Patrick Macgill.
NOW WHEN WE TAKE THE COBBLED ROAD
WE OFTEN TOOK BEFORE,
OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE HEARTY LADS
WHO TREAD THAT WAY NO MORE.
OH! BOYS UPON THE LEVEL FIELDS,
IF YOU COULD CALL TO MIND
THE WINE OF CAFE PIERRE LE BLANC
YOU WOULDN'T STAY BEHIND,
BUT WHEN WE LEAVE THE TRENCH AT NIGHT,
AND STAGGER NEATH OUR LOAD,
GREY, SILENT GHOSTS AS LIGHT AS AIR
COME WITH US DOWN THE ROAD,
AND WHEN WE SIT US DOWN TO DRINK
YOU SIT BESIDE US TOO,
AND DRINK AT CAFE PIERRE LE BLANC
AS ONCE YOU USED TO DO.

Good night, God bless.
Used to go in the Balcarres for a Steak Canadien sandwich 50+ years ago. Very good too.
