Place or Street? That is the question
The postal address for the properties here in Standish is Market Street but on the wall of The Black Bull (between the two trees on the left) the old road sign states that this is Market Place!
No wonder delivery drivers get confused.

I googled The Black Bull, Standish, and the address came up as Market Street Standish WN6 OHW. I also googled Market Place, Standish,, (Market Place written as two words), and the info underneath called it Marketplace, (all one word). Also a little drawn map came on showing "Market Place Cross and Stocks". This was a modern map as it showed The Secret Garden Coffee Lounge and Albert's of Standish. Perhaps there was a weekly market there at one time, and Standish had a Market Street AND a Market Place, as has Wigan.
Colin I rode past there Wednesday dinner heading for Parbold in the drizzle.Looks a decent pub.Traffic queue anlon that stretch often.
There’s a Blackbird nesting in that tree on the left.
Along
[Chorus] Where be that Blackbird to? I know where he be,
He be up yon Wurzel tree, And I be after he!
Now I sees he, And he sees I,
Buggered if I don’t get ‘en
With a gurt big stick I’ll knock ‘im down
Blackbird I’ll ‘ave he!
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
‘Ow’s ‘E Father?
(Audience Answer) Alright!
All me life I’m on the farm, workin’ for me keep
Tendin’ pigs and chickens, and they cows and sheep
But everywhere I’m workin’, there’s one who always mocks me
He hidin' somewhere in the trees, blackbird I’ll ‘ave he!
[Chorus]
Underneath the open sky in spring we loves to dine
We likes to ‘ear the flappin’ of the missus washin’ line
We listens to a tuneful song, a blackbird or a tit,
But on me vest and underpants he scored a direct hit!
[Chorus]
If I goes out poachin’, a creepin’ through the fields,
With me old retriever, a followin’ at me heels.
If I aim me shotgun at a pheasant in the hay
That bloody blackbird starts his row and frightens him away!
[Chorus]
No longer can I sleep at night, get peace of any kind,
That bird’ll be the death of me, he’s prayin’ on me mind!
If I chase him long enough, I’ll get ‘en by and by,
And celebrate me vict’ry with a girt big blackbird pie.
Wurzels.
Irene, you are quite the sleuth, Marketplace is correct.
DTease, you're a card. lad! That hasn't half made me laugh and I can almost hear my Mam saying, "'E's better than a bottle o'medicine, yon mon!". I even did the accent! Just what we needed on this miserable day.
Colin, I'm going to change my p-a-d name to Irene Marple! I don't know if they still do it but years ago The Black Bull used to hang banners outside the pub around Remembrance Day with names of Standish soldiers who had served in the wars, and my friend was sure his great-uncle's name was on from the First World War. My friend lived in London at the time and his visit to Wigan didn't coincide with Remembrance Day but we went in and enquired about the banners, and the staff went to the trouble of getting them out of storage so that my friend could take a photo of his great-uncle's name.
All because “there’s a blackbird nesting in yon tree!”
It made me think of that song ‘ Bye, bye Blackbird and I can’t get it out of my head - said Kylie.
It’ll be Poet next and then ‘E’ by gum!
Thanks DTease, loved every line. Doesn’t half take you back.
As I came out the Black Bull ,
The church bell was striking three ,
I heard a busker singing fully
From out of yonder tree ,
If this was Market Street or Place
I confess I could not fathom ,
For I had been a big disgrace
And consumed over a gallon ,
But I knew the jolly melody
Coming from those twigs ,
And underneath the spreading leaves
I danced a merry jig .
Poet
It is Market Place (two words).
Read the road sign Bob, the label on the tin says Marketplace. End of story.
Mayde it's a place in a street, like Market Place, in Market Street, in Standish?
I'm sure you're right, Sir Bob.....I only repeated what it said when I queried it in Google, which was Marketplace. However, the little map that came up DID say" Market Place", (two words, as you say), "Cross and Stocks". I have no argument with that. I have no personal knowledge of it; I just enjoy joining in the posts and helping if I can.
