Are there that many potholes on this stretch of towpath that it needs so much aggregate or are they filling the potholes and spreading an extra top layer on the path?

Comment by: Tom on 12th June 2024 at 07:00

It's about time, I hit one of the deep water filled potholes a few weeks ago and it very nearly chucked me over the handlebars.

If only they could do the roads

When I travel out of the borough I think the state of the roads in Wigan is that they are a lot better than those in other authorities. I'm not saying the highways department don't have problems but perhaps doing better with the limited budgets at their disposal.

Good to see they are being maintained, my wife tells me they did the stretch of towpath between Appley Bridge and Parbold last year.
I wonder who stands the cost? Can’t be cheap but well worth it.

Not before time Mick as you will well know, I had similar experiences to Tom and probably a lot of others.

Despite the potholes, that looks a lovely stretch of the canal and towpath to go for a walk, with all the greenery around. It looks very peaceful.

I thought it was bread feed dropped off at fishing pegs.

Looks as though my garden has reverted back to its former condition Mick .

Looks like those humanitarian parachutes drops meant for Wigan by the Americans missed there target again!

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 12th June 2024 at 17:13

Had a ride along there today Mick nothing changed from your very recent photo.

I see the driveway from the plantation gates on Wigan lane down as far as the bridge over the Duggie has been resurfaced recently .

They’ve made an excellent job of it an’ all , and it certainly needed doing .

It’ll have cost a few bob no doubt … how much , I have no idea and I don’t know where the money came from either although it wouldn’t have been at the top of list of my priorities , as it rarely carries any traffic worth mentioning … apart from the golf cart that comes down from the hall to empty the bin near the gaytes now and then , Oh and not forgetting the occasional film crew .

Still , the money’s been spent now , and no doubt it will keep Mick happy .
By the way , I’ve included the letter y in my spelling of gates , just to add a little colour to the proceedings .

By the way Ozy I’ve heard they want to replace those gates on Wigan lane if they do that will cost some money and never look as good.

Comment by: DTease on 12th June 2024 at 21:29

Ozy, why are they emptying bins around gay tes?

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 12th June 2024 at 22:06

Yes Irene its a lovely part of Wigan

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 12th June 2024 at 22:10

Yes Ozy your garden has reverted back to its former condition, but the beer can dropper hasn't returned.
I tool a photo of the new road surface but I haven't sent it in yet.

John I hit a water filled pothole on that stretch and I was only going slow but it knocked me of my seat and I landed balls first on the the crossbar.
The council have the money set aside to do the gates and all the stonework.

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 12th June 2024 at 23:02

Can’t see nowt wrong with gates that’s really what I meant they look the part Mick, maybe modernisation.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 13th June 2024 at 08:07

Gates are very old and corroded in places John so they need doing up.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 13th June 2024 at 08:25

Ah !… that would explain it then Mick .
I wondered why your voice sounded a bit squeaky last time we spoke .
And could you have a word with the council to see if I could have the old gates please ?
Times are a bit tough at present .

Comment by: M Hughes on 14th June 2024 at 06:50

The whole path needs relaying like they have done Wigan to Parbold
