Off Market Place, Wigan
I used to get our carpets from Fishers carpets on the left hand side. There are still some imposing buildings along the street from the town hall to the museum.A lot nicer to walk along than its neighbour King st.
Thats a pleasant looking street, attractive red brick buldings. I wonder if my mother worked in one of them, the offices of Deakins Jam ?
Library St has a different atmosphere to King St as it seems more modern and businesslike with its Victorian buildings. I often wonder what it was like before those buildings were built and the street was open to the Market Place, as King St was there much longer with its Georgian buildings. Just wondering…
Library Street is used in an advert on the telly for Aviva Insurance; it is made to look slightly different but anyone who knows it would recognise it. There are some beautiful buildings down there.
A really nice row of individually designed terracotta faced buildings. As I have said before there must have been some money around in those days to invest in attractive long lasting property development.
Unlike many post war developments, these buildings have stood the test of time.
Veronica, you’re right in that King Street reflects the architectural building designs of almost a century earlier. Long before Library Street was even thought about in the boom times of the late Victorian period.
That's because King St has more Junk food outlets and they are multiplying everywhere.
Very sad to see from our younger days.
Alan, I think you will find that they have all gone from King Street having transferred to Wallgate where the footfall of the ‘Great Unwashed’ is better.

I have never heard that area described as off Market Place. It was simply Library Street. Isn’t McNulty's down there?
Yes Broady, McNulty's is still there, and the street is Library Street....I have never known it by any other name, and the original library was down there.
