Frog Lane
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-HX99)
Driven and walked under this bridge hundreds of times when I worked at Walmsleys back in the day. Mr Wangs used to be a pub, but the name escapes me at the moment. or was it the Pear tree?.
Notice an illegal e scooter being ridden along the footpath
I think it was the Collier’s Arms Derek.
Phone Zombie taking due care and attention crossing the road. . The bloke in the red top looks like he's consulting his his 'life preserver' too .
Those e scooters get up to about 40 mph . Total menace on the footpath .
Bobbies do nowt as per usual . Rant over . Have a nice day y'all .
Good pic Dennis, had many great times in colliers and the pear tree, sadly after being closed for a while the pear tree has been sold to become a restaurant.
I walked under that bridge many times when my daughter lived on Frog Lane, and I remember some of the pubs....The Colliers, The Old Pear Tree and The Guardians, (which I assume was named after the guardians of the workhouse). I only go along there when I visit to Boston House for eye appointments now. It's a good view of it with the contrast between the dark tunnel and the light as you come out at the other end.
I used to look at this bridge when I was day dreaming during my geography lessons at the deanery school, I would make bets with myself which way the next train would be going towards wigan or the otherway.
The Old Pear Tree is further down, and it's sign is visible just above the cyclist's head in the photo.
I think this is where all the pigeons lodge under the bridge.. then they fly out for the day in Wigan Park.
I recall driving down here when the Wigan History Society held meetings every third Thursday of the month. I know I turned right at some lights and there were two pubs on the road both closed by now. I can’t remember the names but they were very popular. It was the second pub where the meetings were held. It’s 20 odd years since. I was a member for 2 or 3 years. So irritating when names escape me.
Good photo Dennis, never been to Mr Wang's, though The Colliers was a good pub as were too The Pear Tree and The Guardians as mentioned by Irene.
The postmen who can be seen wearing red T shirts and shorts and on their way to the sorting office are a tough breed, they seem to wear them all year long.
It would have been the colliers Veronica, wigan pie eaters motorcycle club had meetings there every Wednesday, I also recall cricket umpires had meetings in pear tree.
I saw on the news Sunak said he’s going to give 20 million to towns . I think he means cash but you never know .
Thank you very much for the free advertisement
Kerry... is the winner!
Colliers doesn’t sound familiar though Dave. Can you think of any other famous well built pubs going towards Beech Hill?
Could it have been The Famous Pagefield Pub , or The Springfield Pub, Veronica? I once went to a Wigan History meeting as my friend Neil was giving a talk but it was held in the "Bookcycle" building by then, which I believe used to be Beech Hill Library.
Was it not the famous Pagefield Veronica, or lady bowes lyon club at top of beech hill, or the brick makers on Woodhouse lane.
You may be talking about the Pagefield Veronica. It's been closed for a while now but has scaffolding around it at the mo, looks like it's being repurposed for flats.
Veronica, the bridge you are thinking of is along Park Road as this is an arched bridge, whereas the the Park Road one is flat and with having girders they're manmade roosting perches for the pigeons.
Thinking of pubs the only local pub around there which had a reception or meeting room was The Pagefield, but it was the only pub along Park Road unless you came up Gidlow Lane, then it would be the second one after The Bird i'th Hand, can't think of any others it could be.
Are you sure you are on the right road, Veronica?
This is Frog Lane, are you thinking of Parson’s Walk and the Famous Pagefield Hotel?
Kerry’s comment sparked a memory for me. The English class at Aspull Secondary was on the top floor and through the large windows you could see, across the Playing Fields to the path across the Moor. I very often spent most of the lesson watching the good folks of Aspull going about their business and wishing I was out there with them.
“Tha’s a yed full o jolly robins” my grandma used to tell me. She was right and I think I probably still have!
Irene - You are in good hands at Boston House. My relative was treated very well there, and for many years by Mr Natha and his team.
I’ve been away too long I can see. It was the pub after the Pagefield. I still can’t remember the name. There was a car park on the left of it. Yes you are right I was driving down Park Rd not Frog Lane!!!
Dennis's comment reminded me.
"I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it"
- W. Shakespear -
It have to be the one on park Road don't remember it on my way to walmsleys years ago.but then again the hoardings look familiar on frog Lane.
Here's some Mr Wing, Wang & Wong jokes,
I couldn't resist it Dennis so apologies for that, and of course to Mr Wang too.
Mr Wang gone, for a while it was Mr Wing though he gone too, then Mr Wong took over. Folks still do telephone Mr Wang and then realise that they wing the wong number.
Mr and Mrs Wong have been trying for a baby for a while now, and finally Mrs Wong gets pregnant. After giving birth the midwife hands Mr Wong a blue-eyed white skinned baby and says "he's your son what would you like to name him?"
Mr Wong thinks for a moment, then says, "Well, since two Wongs don't make a white, I think we'll name him Sum Ting Wong."
A man goes to see Doctor Wong and says,
"Doctor, I just cannot get a date, no one will go out with me."
Dr. Wong says, "Mmm I see, Take off your clothes and get on hands and knees."
Which he does.
Doctor says "Now crawl to wall."
The man does so and looks back as doctor says,
"I know what is wrong."
“What is it Doctor! What do I have?" replies the man,
Doctor says "You have Ed Zachary disease."
"Ed Zachary disease? What is that?!" replies the very concerned man,
Doctor replies "Well you see - your face looks Ed Zachary like your ass!"
I think it may have been The Springfield, Veronica, on Springfield Road, unless it was The Prince of Wales or The Douglas Bank on Woodhouse Lane.
Irene I-think you’re right it was the Springfield.
Just shows I.’m miles out of the way.
Rock n’ Roll Kerry , Hope you will post again. Let’s tell how we feel , not hold or deny , according to !
All this conversation naming pubs reminds me of several Pinter plays where characters have banal conversations about things that are not meaningful and about which they know nothing about e.g. London bus routes but nothing conclusive.
It may sound ‘banal’ to you Paul P but not to the ‘conversationalists’.
Actually you must have been interested to persist in reading the posts. In the end I found satisfaction and conclusion in where I had been a quarter of a century ago. It’s what folk would do in a ‘gathering’. That’s what the photo is about…what it reminds you of when you no longer live in the area. Simple really unless you aren’t interested … clearly you aren’t.
Well said, Veronica. There is nothing nicer than when someone can't just remember a place and everyone joins in trying to help. What harm is there in that? And usually someone comes up with the right answer, even if we DO go "all round t'council houses fert get to t'main road"....it's all part of the fun.
Hi Veronica. I am interested actually and I look at PAD each day. As I grew up in Wigan and left many years ago I am grateful to all the people who take photos and post. I simply expressed what it reminded me of, not as a criticism of people’s comments. I am genuinely sorry that you took offence at my comment but this was never intended and hope that you will accept this apology.
Perhaps there’s a Cambridge University blog site where Paul P could join in with meaningful conversations about drama and up and coming playwrights.
Another one who just chips in at the end with his conclusions.
Nothing said about the photo or anything of any interest.
Some people forget this is Wigan World.
Apology accepted Paul P. Seeing as you are a born and bred Wiganer after all. My apologies for jumping to the wrong .’conclusion’.
