Helta Skelta or Cork Screw?

Helta Skelta or Cork Screw?
Yes, the photo is taken from the roof of The Grand Arcade, Wigans own fun ride!
Quite dizzying to drive up and down in a car but much more fun going down on roller skates or a tin tray.

A total monstrosity

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 21st May 2024 at 08:58

I didn't do it on roller skates or a tin tray, but I did do it on a push bike and videoing at the same time.

I suppose this sort of thing is necessary for parking but just compare the ugliness of it compared to the beauty of the cloud formation above it. To quote from the film "The Family Way"...."You can't beat Nature for beauty".

Mick, many thanks for the link, really good to watch but it left me a a bit queasy and dizzy. I had to go and lay down for a few minutes to recover my balance!
Thanks, great video.

Take the pointless ornamental structure away, and what have you got?
By gum! It’s just a standard slip road like many car parks have?

Comment by: James Topping. on 21st May 2024 at 11:50

Very interesting Sir.
I've been passed the front door of the Grand Arcade many a time but I've never ventured inside yet.

Comment by: WN6 on 21st May 2024 at 13:11

Try going down the ramp in a shopping trolley and then get a front row seat in the bingo hall across the road after you’ve crash through doors. Sounds like fun to me.
Love the sky by the way.

Never been up or down there Colin, though I do remember scenes from an episode of BBCs Top Gear which were filmed on the Millgate multi-storey car park of the Grand Arcade, they were trying to beat one another by going down and then back up the quickest, and of course there was the usual cheating (they call it adding a bit of comedy) by Paddy the man from Bolton and Freddie the man from Preston.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st May 2024 at 15:09

I have no idea what has happened to my comment which I added this morning!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st May 2024 at 15:31

Irene, comments seemed a bit slow to uploading today. Nothing’s been the same since they landed on the Moon, or it could be Climate Change, Brexit or the Chinese!

Comment by: Sir Bob on 21st May 2024 at 15:33

It is an expensive place to park.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st May 2024 at 15:51

It's since they stopped the divi at The Co-op, Colin!

Comment by: Shep on 21st May 2024 at 16:12

Go do one Noakes! you and your 'alter egos' cannot compliment anyone can you. Let us see some of your photos so we too can then be finicky about them and put your nose out of joint - again! you don't like that do you.

Comment by: Shep on 5th November 2023 at 20:55
oh oh, right on Dave, you've certainly put Noakes nose out of joint there - and he doesn't like it when he's proved wrong, so much so that he's now nit picking and having a rant at Ron on the other Orrell photo.

Great photos Ron, showing life as it was.

Sir Bob, not if you have a bus pass!

Comment by: John D on 21st May 2024 at 16:43

If you have a disability badge and register with APCOA,you can park free of charge on any of the car parks all over the country.
Thr car park at the side of wallgate Station is also run by APCOA

Comment by: Ex Speed Cop on 21st May 2024 at 16:47

Irene you can't park on a cloud, I know you can send Internet stuff but there no good cars.

Comment by: Pw on 21st May 2024 at 17:13

I have never seen a good looking multi-storey car park anywhere.Would have loved to have gone down this on a trolley.

Great photo Colin not had any service and couldn’t join the Wi-Fi at the Villa at Wrea Green, sorry to go off the subject but Wigan Mick I was talking to a lady that had paid £20 thousand for one knee replacement and £14 thousand for the other a few years back and working fine due to plenty physio before and after I’ll take a look at the video later.

Comment by: Sue on 21st May 2024 at 17:43

You need a new computer Irene.
So pleased Mick is back.

Comment by: John (westhoughton) on 21st May 2024 at 18:06

Hey up the archaeologists are digging deep on the former Galleries shopping centre to seek out buried artefacts and remnants of old roads and buildings as Wigan is ancient enough to have the potential to yield up all kinds of secrets from the past Colin.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st May 2024 at 18:14

Well, you should know, Ex-speed cop. And there isn't only me who has commented on the cloud formation. We all see different things when observing p-a-d.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st May 2024 at 18:29

John (Westhoughton) can’t believe you were in Wrea Green yesterday, so were we with friends for a fabulous day in Lytham.
The yellow iris around the pond on the village green spectacular in the sunshine. Took loads of pictures, who knows you might be on one.

Comment by: WN6 on 21st May 2024 at 18:34

Irene, the cloud passing over is where my pictures are stored. They fly past too quick to upload any.

Comment by: Dave on 21st May 2024 at 18:44

Rock n Roll Mick , you are a WW legend in my book! I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy your videos enormously, skirting about every nook and cranny to tell the ‘true ‘ Wigan story ! History is ‘All ‘ and can never be spelt my own . Mick if your other leg needs doing , I wish you well ! You took me on a journey of memories, changes and moments , what else do we have ?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st May 2024 at 18:51

You're right, "SUE"....I'll get one as soon as I can. Thankyou.

Comment by: Meg on 21st May 2024 at 18:52

I love the contrast between the stark man-made structure and the soft, beautiful shapes of the clouds against the blue of the sky. Man versus nature and nature wins hands down.

Comment by: John (westhoughton) on 21st May 2024 at 19:49

There you go Colin we was going to dine in the Grapes at the green but closed for a big refurbished but enjoyed a chinwag with a couple who just called for a drink on there ebikes, we had a ride along the canal to Monton and enjoyed a meal at the Waterside pub today well worth a visit it’s a small world as they say.
