mother nature at its worst with the high winds causing so much damage

Comment by: Derek Platt on 25th April 2024 at 00:36

Oh, I thought it was just a bird's eye view.

Comment by: Arthur on 25th April 2024 at 04:56

Where on the loop line was this photo taken, John....the bridge doesn't look familiar. Just to get my bearings.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th April 2024 at 08:57

What a tangle in the jungle. Take a saw with you John next time. I know somebody who would be glad of all that wood.

Comment by: Malc on 25th April 2024 at 10:30

I think Veronica is referring to Garry, and yes he would take it I'm sure.
Where on the line is the arch bridge?

Comment by: Dilton on 25th April 2024 at 10:34

This is the true fact that happens on live railway lines. Trees or landslides.
We're was the photo taken on the disused line.

Arthur it’s 2.2 north of the 7 or 9 arch viaduct sorry I can’t be more precise as a first for me last Sunday as I’ve only ever done the stretch from Hindley to the trail leading down to the Plantation gates but will be more precise once I speak to our leader Paul (who has the bicycle shop at Platt Bridge)as he takes us on our Sunday morning adventures all around Wigan etc etc.

Veronica I did think of taking my chainsaw on mi bike but electric bike is heavy enough.Yesterday did Fleetwood to Blackpool South Shore all by the sea and while enjoying a cornet at Cleveleys on the return enjoyed a chat with a guy who was collecting a bit of driftwood for his wood burner.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 25th April 2024 at 11:39

I bet there's a Lancashire Tarzan in there saying, "Owd mon! It's cowder than t'jungle in 'ere, Jane", and a Lancashire Jane answering "Ne'er mind, Tazan, Lad, Summer's comin'....be reet".

Arthur after looking at my Relive App that traces your entire journey it was over Red Rock bridge past what was the Crawford Arms and turn right into a little car park from where the Loop Line starts again heading for Adlington we did a 25.5 mile on and off the Loop Line Sunday an adventure I won’t be doing again in hurry big smiley face.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th April 2024 at 12:07

Only joking John…it’s hard enough riding the bike all that way without a saw in your back pack..;o)

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 25th April 2024 at 12:27

The photo was taken precisely 2.2 miles north of what is known locally as the 20 bridges of which I’d never heard of till just watching a utube video of the Whelley loop line (Whelley Station only open for 2 months then closed?)

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 25th April 2024 at 12:47

Irene I love it when you use the Lancashire/Wigan accent !
My Uncle Joe Bradshaw was a lay preacher & could speak with a 'posh' accent when needed but when he used to tell a joke he was always a Wigan man! His jokes were weird...hardly even funny but it was the way he told them. I hear his voice in my head even now.

Comment by: Arthur on 25th April 2024 at 13:15

I thought is was the Adlington to Chorley line, just after Red Rock. The line branched to the right not far from the 20 bridges.
On that section of track bed there's a bridge that carries the canal over the then railway.

Comment by: Mark on 25th April 2024 at 13:19

This is Not on the Whelley railway, the arch bridge is a give away.
This is on the old track to White Bear after red rock station.
Good photo John.

Comment by: Bert Woods on 25th April 2024 at 13:24

This is on the Domino's Viaducts now demolished on the way to Chorley/Adlington from the Whelley line. The Lancashire Union Railway.

Veronica I normally do around 40 miles on Sundays,my furthest was Sunday 4th June last year 80.8 miles all recorded on the free version of Relive BUT I’m not super fit as my electric bike really does help a lot big smiley face.

Irene I was thinking we may have seen you and your Peter with his Hillman Minx on Sunday at Haigh Hall as we were talking to an elderly man with a mint Triumph Acclaim on the car park just over Red Rock he said he had travelled from Moston (Mc) was killing a bit of time before the Classic Car Show at Haigh Hall,we made a detour later to Haigh Hall but no sign of any classic cars whatsoever poor chap he surely must’ve been (unwell). I could have done with Tarzan Sunday to push my bike up a long slutchy path that you could hardly walk up without falling had to stop several times to catch my breath hence not doing that route ever again.

This bridge isn’t actually on the Whelley loop line. It crosses the trackbed of the line that used
to run through Brock mill junction , then Red Rock station to Adlington and Chorley , before branching off towards Heapey and finally terminating at Cherry Tree near Blackburn .
The bridge itself is the next bridge along the line towards Adlington following the one that carries Arley lane over the long defunct line .
This may help to clear up some confusion .

This seems to be typical damage caused by back draft from the phantom express. Well over one hundred years since a steam train travelling from Blackpool crashed on the Amberswood section in the 1800's. The ghost train of the Whelley loop line returns for the driver and passengers who lost their lives. Destination Yorkshire.

All the gents know a lot more than I do as it was a first for me and thanks for defining exactly where we was,the utube video is very interesting with a young lady from Standish walking and commenting along the Whelley loop line.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 25th April 2024 at 16:31

John, I admit I didn't know about the Classic Car Show at Haigh! Oh dear! However, Peter is fiddling with Dorothy at the moment, (they can't touch you for it!), so we can't go out in her just yet. She will be out and about in the Summer months.

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 25th April 2024 at 18:37

Irene there was no classic car show at Haigh on Sunday but the elderly man we spoke to obviously thought there was so being kind I said he must have been unwell, maybe dementia.By the way your Peter must try CarPlan No 1 Super Gloss it’s cheap and does what it says on the can no hard rubbing he won’t be disappointed.

People usually only use old cars in the Summer months and are usually stored away in Winter. Old car really suffer from rust and corrosion. Vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s were really rust buckets you were lucky to get 10 years out of them. Many were welded and patch up for MOT.
After saying that cars of that era did have character although unreliable.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 26th April 2024 at 09:00

Thanks John. Another reason for the man turning up when there wasn't a car show could be that he had looked it up on Google and noted the date from a different year....they don't remove the information from past years. We have looked up 1940s events and found a date for one, only to find on closer inspection that it was on that date THE PREVIOUS YEAR! I always type in , eg, "Lytham 1940s event 2024" now, and even then I double-check.

Comment by: Mark on 26th April 2024 at 09:53

Vehicles that are 40 years old and over, are TAX exempt. Worthwhile running a banger.
What is misunderstood with this, modern cars are TAXED on emissions, from £30 to almost £500 depending on engines and age. Why should old bangers over 40, with smelley none existence emissions be free from TAX duty.
I would love to own an old banger, but would at least expect it to be MOT inspected.

Comment by: Arthur on 26th April 2024 at 15:00

Ozy no confusion on my behalf.
I know exactly where it is.
But you have explained it in great detail.
