Save The Spire
The sign says "Save The Spire".

The appeal within the parish of Saint Wilfred's seems to be urgent. Perhaps hosting telecommunications apparatus within the spire could help provide some funds to save the spire ?
is this the only church in wigan must be the most photography on wigan world l o l
Regardless of the whole debate about if the church should be using it's billions to pay for the spire the housebuilders who have ravaged Standish's countryside should be putting their hands in their pockets to help save it's most iconic landmark
It's unthinkable that the spire should fall down . I don't know why the C of
Eng don't delve into their £billions to repair it .
I thought that if you owned a Grade I listed building you were responsible for its maintenance and repair? Come on C of E get your checkbook out!
Who pays for the work if it ever gets done.
With respect, The Spire looks straight the me.
I don’t know what is wrong with the spire, but at the join just under the clock it seems to be leaning to the right.
Fred Dibnah would have repaired that in a day for a packed of cigarettes and a pint.
Not many people get married these days, I think what keeps Churches going is funarals to fund them.
St. Wilfrid's is the only Grade 1 listed building in the Wigan metropolitan borough.
I think Janet is probably right. For all the hundreds of new homes now in Standish, probably more people went to church when it was just a village with a small population, giving to the collection plate at services and getting married there. This is not a criticism....I don't live in Standish and I am not a churchgoer myself....it's just an observation. Churches have always held "fund-raisers", eg Concerts, Jumble Sales, Summer Fayres etc, to raise money for the roof-fund, the organ fund etc. etc, but people don't attend these affairs like they once did. We live in a different world now. Sad but true.
Dennis I was only pointing St Wilfrid’s out whilst cycling the northern end of the Whelley loop line on Sunday you can see that Spire from miles away as we did the whole of what’s rideable of the line coming across three fallen trees but managed to get by them as they blocked the path.
I think Fred got the call the last time the spire needed work. Apparently, he said he would do the work as he normally would with a rope and a bosun's chair. When the 'Elf and Safety man was sufficiently revived, Fred's offer was turned down.
First swallows spotted in Appley Bridge this morning so it won't be long until they are back nesting in St Wilfs spire.
