No1 Wallgate

No1 Wallgate
No1 Wallgate - Originally Retail Building for Coop & Co.
Very much altered when The Midland Bank acquired the building with the cupola added.
Please refer to the Album for Ron Hunt’s picture from 1904.

Highly desired potential pent house apartments in the centre of town .How many floors are in full use? The building itself has stood the test of time and stands proud in its position.I wonder how many people walk past these older buildings and never look upwards past the 1st floor and do not notice what is up there.

Thanks all for yesterday’s pre-birthday wishes. T.D. Was on with the ages of my brother and myself.

Great photo Colin and a very happy birthday to you and your brother maybe see you later have a good day.

I wonder what is in all those upstairs rooms in that beautiful building? I love the two "dormer" windows in the roof over the Library Street side, and wonder what lies behind them? Probably just empty wasted space. Happy Birthday, Colin!

There’s a window open if it’s empty there'll be spiders and cobwebs everywhere. All these building would make grand apartments.
Have a good birthday Colin but don’t go swinging from the rafters…getting too old for that..;o)

Last time I was in there it was the Coffee Bank cafe!

The top floor seems to be occupied. I can see two open windows and what seems to be a light in the middle one.

Well I was puzzled at first, but if that pub is the raven then all is clear.

Just out of picture heading down Library Street I used to go to a barbers. Edmondson’s I think. A guy called Tony cut my hair and he opened a barbers shop in Platt Bridge later and then a shop selling leather goods in Ashton.

I've only been upstairs in that building once and that was to discuss clearing my overdraft with the bank manager.

Broady, the guy called Tony, who you say opened a shop in Ashton selling leather goods, did he also sell perfume and stationary? And was he on the ground floor?

I went in there in late December 1999 and paid off what was left of my mortgage. I was determined not to enter a new millenium with a mortgage.

Not sure. I just remember when he left Platt Bridge someone told me he had a shop selling handbags and similar stuff. It would probably be the 70’s.

Dennis and Colin we had a couple in the Berkeley this afternoon and it’s worth a visit just for the gallery to be photographed it’s looks untouched with time.Reverant David the scaffolding in the platform or central both same was being used to maybe sort a leaky arch/ceiling.

I remember Tony , but I only knew him as Anthony , and he did have a shop in Ashton selling handbags . His shop was called Anthony’s , strange as that may sound , and he used to cut my hair in a room upstairs above his shop which faced Armoury Bank .

Barry Greenall’s mam used to work for him in the shop .

He owned and rented several properties in Ashton and I believe he lived on Liverpool road , although he no longer moves amongst us .

Just a few snippets of useless information .

The gentleman in question was Tony Roby his shop was on Wigan Road ( now a dentist ) , his shop sold leather goods and a collection of other wares including Home Brew Paraphernalia . He still did some barbering on the first floor , he was a very colourful character, bright clothes being his trade mark . He died some years ago at quite an early age.R.I.P.
