The Gatekeeper's Cottage

The Gatekeeper's Cottage
Mesnes Park, Wigan.
It was allowed to become a ruin, but was renovated and used as a wedding venue for a time. Not sure if it is still used for that purpose.

I like the mock Tudor on the building and am glad it has been given a new lease of life as a wedding venue. When was is built?

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 28th February 2024 at 07:28

I could have sworn that I had put this down as Wigan Park…. Strange!

Comment by: Kath H on 28th February 2024 at 08:13

Dennis. It’s still used as a wedding venue. I know because I am going to a wedding there in October. It is called The Lodge now.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th February 2024 at 08:29

A good photo Dennis , a slip of the tongue maybe regarding Wigan Park. ‘Mesnes’ Park does not ring true. I would never have said to my mam
“ Can we go to ‘Mesnes’
Park today Mam?”…she would have said “Y’what?”..

Comment by: Gordon Ion on 28th February 2024 at 08:35

I remember it being at the entrance to Mesnes Park when it was the home of Jack Ashton who was the head of Wigan Parks dept.. This would be in the 1960's

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 08:41

Mesnes Park Lodge to give its correct title is on Mesnes Terrace and is a Grade ll Listed Building.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th February 2024 at 08:48

You probably did put it down as Wigan Park, Dennis, but whoever has uploaded it has probably realised that, after yesterday's p-a-d. there would be comments insisting it is MESNES Park! A relative of mine got married there but I didn't attend the wedding so have never seen inside but I used to think it was such a shame for such a lovely building to stand empty and I was glad to see it "brought back to life".

Comment by: Vic on 28th February 2024 at 09:06

Veronica echos Irene's words every time. If I would have posted the same words, I would have bin told off.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 09:06

Correction: Mesnes Park Terrace!
And please note is not referred to as Wigan Park Lodge on Wigan Park Terrace leading to Wigan Park.
Although colloquially it might be referred to as Wigan Park for those who wish to do so.

Comment by: Garry on 28th February 2024 at 09:27

Another beautiful photo and buiding Dennis, I'll go with Wigan Park, its what we've been brought up with. Cheers.

Comment by: Brian on 28th February 2024 at 10:06

Sorry Dennis, you did say Wigan Park but I changed it to Mesnes Park.
Interesting reading comments about the name. I've lived in Wigan all my life (50+yrs) and know it as Mesnes Park.
Now the cat's amongst the pigeons, I'll disappear.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th February 2024 at 10:16

Well said Garry. Don’t know what you are on about Vic.

Comment by: Garry on 28th February 2024 at 10:24

Brian, I've lived in Wigan for 73 years and always know it as both, Mesnes Park and Wigan Park.
But use Wigan Park as kids, that's how we were brought up with, it was only years after I learned the parks real name is Mesnes Park. Cheers Brian.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th February 2024 at 10:38

Vic, (no doubt yet another take on Veronica's name!!), can I just say that Veronica and I echo each other's words because great minds think alike! We also post under our true names rather than hiding behind a false one, like a child throwing stones from a safe distance. People may not always agree with mine and Veronica's points of view but at least they know who has written them. Post your sarcastic comments under your own name, (which is not Vic or Cave Iron or Rev O Cain or Ernie Strebor), and earn a bit of respect at least. There was no need for your comment which has absolutely nothing to do with today's p-a-d....it was just to cause trouble. It's a pity you have nothing better to do.

Comment by: Vic on 28th February 2024 at 10:47

Mesnes Park is pronounced Mains Park but reads Mes nes Park.

Comment by: David Barker on 28th February 2024 at 11:01

Excellent photo Dennis, of Mesnes Park Lodge , crisp and clear ,it was just short of some nice blue sky above , no chance LOL .
Even spell checker doesn't recognise Mesnes LOL . Must admit I've always called it Mesnes Park .

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th February 2024 at 11:14

Brian, you have no need to disappear, despite calling it Mesnes Park and mentioning pigeons in your comment....Lol!! Where on earth would we be without you and the team? I look forward to p-a-d every day. I know the name has something to do with the word "demesnes" , and I think perhaps "Worsley Mesnes" might also have been so-called for a similar reason. When we go to Ingleton in Yorkshire to the 1940s event we park in a road called Demesnes Road, so it is obviously a widespread name.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 28th February 2024 at 11:22

Sorry about that Brian, I was blaming it on the spellchecker.
Last Summer I sent an email to a friend explaining how he could remove the ants in his garden, it came through to him as how to remove his pants in his garden!. He declined my advice, much to the relief of his neighbours no doubt.

Comment by: Arthur on 28th February 2024 at 11:58

Good point that Vic, Mes-nes we all make it sound like Mains Park.
But I'll stay with Wigan Park.
Good photo.

Comment by: britboy on 28th February 2024 at 12:42

As a child I always ask my mam ‘can we go to Wigan Park to feed the ducks’.
And of course rubbing the old man’s shoe on the way out for luck.

Comment by: Keith on 28th February 2024 at 12:46

Never been keen on anything mock since they promoted me to the mock turtle soup line at Heinz

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 13:07

Thanks Brian and to Dennis for the picture.
Living close to the town centre and there effectively being two Parks, Mesnes Park(The big one) and what we called The Little Park. This being the garden’s adjacent to the Parish Church.
Yet another cat amongst the pigeons!!
Oh what controversy your pictures have unwittingly caused Dennis.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th February 2024 at 13:08

I think we all know that Vic being born and bred in Wigan. Somehow I don’t think you are the one who fiddles with my name or Irene’s. Have you ever heard of Eneri Strebor? …no I thought not. Apologies if you are who you say you are. Now that could be Victor or Victoria…who knows.. so keep that tab! And don’t fiddle with Mesnes.

Comment by: Bill Broad on 28th February 2024 at 13:47

Is the sun dial still in the small garden bordered by the wall of the Linacre centre and Parsons Walk?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th February 2024 at 14:05

Bill Broad, the sundial was still in the rose garden last year so I imagine it will still be there now... funnily enough I have just got home from The Linacre Centre after having blood tests and had your post appeared before I set out I would have nipped into the park for a look!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 14:10

Veronica / Irene, I thought that lot of fiddlers had, had their strings pulled.
I don't know why people cannot use at least one real name.

Comment by: Julie on 28th February 2024 at 14:19

Yes,you can safely say most of us will stick with Wigan Park !

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 14:20

Bill, I think the Sundial is still there in the Rose Garden. The garden was refurbished an number of years and re-opened by Sir Ian McKellen

Comment by: Victor on 28th February 2024 at 14:25

OK I'll will use Victor in future, Vic is just shorter and I'm known has Vic. It's not a problem. Irene my post at just after 9.06 is that you and Veronica think alike, that's lovely. It was said with humour, sorry if it caused upset.

Comment by: Bill Broad on 28th February 2024 at 14:37

Thanks for everyone’s replies about the sun dial. It is over 60 years since I saw it when I was at WGS.

Irene, I have been reading a while that you have been off colour. Hope they are solving your problems and you will soon be back to normal. I won’t be walking the streets of Abram this year.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th February 2024 at 14:46

Vic I don’t mind you using Vic it’s just that Irene and myself have had a certain someone using our names as an amalgam. Mixing up the letters. The last one was ‘ cave iron’ which has all the letters of my name which is rubbish and disrespectful. So we call him/ her ‘Clog Iron’. That was just one of a few daft attempts at impersonating our names. So carry on with ‘Vic’ it’s nice to know you are not that clown. Sorry for the ‘mix up’.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th February 2024 at 15:03

Victor/Vic, if I have mixed you up with the sad person who regularly rearranges mine and Veronica's names to add stupid comments then I assure you that I am very sorry. Please call yourself Vic if that is what you are known as. The trouble with people like "Anagram Man" is that they make you suspect everyone whose name you are not familiar with and I thought "Vic" was just another way of using letters from Veronica's name, especially as your comment this morning contained both our names....I just naturally assumed it was him. I hold my hands up if I was wrong and apologise. Veronica and I DO tend to use similar words as we think very much alike on most of the p-a-d photos.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 28th February 2024 at 15:14

I DON'T THINK THE SUN DIAL IS STILL THERE?? I THINK IT WAS REMOVED QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO? NO DOUBT IT BEING BRONZE SOME MISCREANT WOULD HAVE STOLEN IT TO "WEIGH IN "
IF THEY WILL STEAL A BRONZE TABLET FROM THE WAR MEMORIAL!!! NOTHING IS SACRED..

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 28th February 2024 at 15:23

Bill Broad to answer your question yes the sundial is still there, but it doesn't work anymore because someone as pinched the brass bit that kept the time.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 28th February 2024 at 15:59

It is a very nice looking Lodge, I like the way the roof in the foreground matches the one further back.
For what its worth I always knew ''THE PARK '' as Mesnes Park. What if there were was more than one park in a town & you were meeting someone ?You would have to give the name of the park.....wouldn't you ??? You couldn't just say the park, they would say which one ?
Goodness, I don't know why I got involved with all this !!

Comment by: Vic on 28th February 2024 at 16:02

Thank you both, I will stay with Vic, Victor is my full Christian name but I'm always known as Vic. I love all your comment, the both of you are jewels on the site.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th February 2024 at 16:38

That’s lovely of you Vic - you’re a gentleman through and through. I’ll be Pearl and Irene can be Ruby. ;o))

Comment by: Peter Walsh on 28th February 2024 at 16:42

This whole area, pre Park, was called The Mesnes, from Gidlow Colliery to Dicconson Street, with Mesnes Colliery about where the cafe is. Good photo Dennis.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 17:08

Thanks Victor, I am sure all are appreciative of your message. Keep on posting.

Comment by: Vic on 28th February 2024 at 17:45

Both Jewels in the Crown.

Comment by: John Noakes on 28th February 2024 at 20:32

I imagine, to anyone from Wigan, it would be known as Mesnes Park.
To anyone else, not from Wigan, it would be excusable to refer to Wigan Park as it is a park and it is in Wigan.
There is another Mesnes Park in Newton.

Comment by: Perkin Warbeck on 30th March 2024 at 17:43

The brass sundial was removed by the Council for safekeeping immediately after Ian McKellen reopened the Rose Garden several years ago.
