I remember back in 1981 when Hindley Station was well maintained, travelling to Bolton and back every day. This was lost through the nineties and 2000's and rediscovered a few years ago.

It looks lovely, All credit to the people who keep it in such good shape. Didn't there used to be a resident peacock there? I know there was a sort of framed "sculpture" of one at one point but I'm sure I saw a real one once through the train window, although I haven't been through Hindley Station for a very long time.

Well done Friends of Hindley Station & to all the volunteers that keep stations around the country looking bright & cheerful.

Nice to see at least the platforms are kept tidy and full of flowers in the summer time. The entrance to the station is not very inviting to look at.

The friends of Hindley volunteers do a really brilliant job looking after the station and when its in Bloom its absolutely beautiful. Hindley, has many times voted the best kept station awards.
Many thanks to all the volunteers, you are noticed.
Cheers Brian.

This is one of the very best stations for its displays whether it’s Summer or Winter. The dedication of the volunteers is tremendous. It’s a pleasure to go through the station. Same for Westhoughton Station…( not Daisy Hill.)

The volunteers here do sterling work in keeping the station so colourful and tidy, they are award-winners.x

Yes, a real credit to those Civic minded people who take pride in their environment. What a contrast when you arrive at Wigan Wallgate!!!!

Comment by: Arthur on 26th November 2023 at 13:17

What a contrast to the next station, Ince. Lovely place in the 1960s with station masters, well kept waiting rooms and coal fires.
Now unloved and rundown sadly.
A real credit to Hindley station and volunteers.

To much tat for me , If you want to see two nice stations take a look at Gathurst and Appley Bridge, there very old fashioned and original.

Comment by: Malc on 26th November 2023 at 15:28

Hindley a much busier station than Appley Bridge and Gathhurst anyway. Trains from Hindley can go past these two stations on to Southport or to Wallgate and on to Liverpool. Hindley a beautiful well kept station with a lot of Originality.

So is Westhoughton station Tom, its very nice and clean. I don't think the stations you mention are busy, I think trains only stop there now and again.

Comment by: Train spotter on 26th November 2023 at 15:56

Tom the stations are clean that you pointed out, that's because no one uses them. Hindley station's
car park is full every working day.

You're fooling no-one 'Tom' !

Comment by: Jeanette on 26th November 2023 at 16:45

PeterP there has been work going on to install a disabled toilet,so that may explain your criticism of the front of the station. It has been very wet recently.........just saying

Comment by: Aspuller on 26th November 2023 at 16:56

Tom...to much tat for me. Should be....Too much tat for me!
I disagree with you anyway.
Lovely station Hindley...the best.

Appley Bridge & Gathurst station get very busy everyday with commuters who come from Orrell Upholland Wrightington Standish to use the stations.
Im one of them who will be on the 6.50 tomorrow

Comment by: Alan on 26th November 2023 at 22:32

Early bird sue, you should be in bed fast a sleep now.

Comment by: Ian on 26th November 2023 at 23:47

Lovely station which I am always pleased to see. I pass through it a lot when I am travelling from Manchester Airport to Wigan.
Old stations should be kept in the way they once were when there was great pride in our stations and trains. Modern concrete and metal stations are cold and unfriendly. Those Victorian stations not only had great character, they were also welcoming.

Comment by: Garry on 27th November 2023 at 01:29

What... can you imagine what would happen if coal-fires came back. Activists will have a field day. The railways are trying desperately to get shut of guards and ticket offices , so station masters will never return.
Old stations will never happen. Ian.

Comment by: Julie on 27th November 2023 at 08:35

Well said Ian.

Does this award winning station have lifts so mothers and babies can get down to the platforms.
