Typical Council and a waste of tax payers money. It doesn't even look nice. I need a sherry.

Comment by: Derek Platt on 19th November 2023 at 05:09

Why wash it, just make an enormous box and cover it up.

Comment by: PeterP on 19th November 2023 at 07:01

It will take more than a piece of soap and a flannel to wash this face.

Comment by: Jack on 19th November 2023 at 07:54

Could do with knocking down.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 19th November 2023 at 08:22

Another ugly grey thing. Can hardly cheer folk up. Wonder how much that set them back ?

Comment by: Gary on 19th November 2023 at 08:40

Easter Island minus sea and sun.

Could do with a wash??.....Could do with a bulldozer!

Comment by: Veronica on 19th November 2023 at 09:14

What a monstrosity! He looks like he’s got belly ache if he had a belly. Or he’s in a bad mood…..

Comment by: Arthur on 19th November 2023 at 09:39

Not a lover of this face, ugly looking and as you say Brian needs a clean, knowing Wigan Council that's not going to happen. If you look at some street furniture like street signs, they are filthy and full of green mold. Some road signs unreadable.

The face of Wigan???
Is that all we have to offer an ugly looking face of what.
Get it demolished your good at that Wigan Council.

Comment by: Wiganer on 19th November 2023 at 10:34

Who is it supposed to represent.
The face of who. Second thought, don't tell me, it would be insulting to the person it's supposed to represent.

Comment by: Coireall on 19th November 2023 at 10:41

Would there be anyone employed at Wigan Council now who they could get to give that a wash? So they would have to get in a contractor to clean it and all the palaver and costs that would entail, so twelve months later it may look to be getting done, then it will get pushed back.
All those who work in the Glasshouse would think it beneath them to roll up their shirt or blouse sleeves to give it a rub down with a couple of long handled mops.

Comment by: Malc on 19th November 2023 at 11:17

A cherrypicker would be more safer and suitable to wash that face without leaving a tidemark.
After saying that, if the Council do use a cherrypicker, just dismantle the thing because I'm not sure who or what it's supposed to represent.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 19th November 2023 at 11:21

I don't mind it but looking at it now it does look a bit like a Victorian Death Mask and better than that rusty girder put up in the name of modern art at the side of Bryan House at the junction of Powell Street and Standishgate.
If brave enough, could we have a picture of that please?

Comment by: Ray on 19th November 2023 at 11:48

He is not pretty like me and Veronica.

Comment by: Pru on 19th November 2023 at 12:10

The amount of rain we have had, everything is covered in mildew.

Comment by: Veronica on 19th November 2023 at 12:22

I wondered about power washing but the water would get into the crevices and could blow him apart… if he’s not cleaned soon there’ll be a wig of green moss on his head.. he’ll end up looking like a scarecrow. He’s definitely not in the same class as Francis Sharpe Powell that’s for sure. That statue is more on a par with Rodin’s ‘Great Thinker’ in comparison. ( to my bleary eyes!)

Comment by: Joe Soap on 19th November 2023 at 14:43

It's not mucky, it's just weathered.

Come spring it will be sparkling again in the Wigan sunshine

Comment by: DTease on 19th November 2023 at 15:58

I take it modesty is one of your many virtues Ray?
Do you kiss the mirror every night before bed?

Comment by: Veronica on 19th November 2023 at 16:50

Even in old age Ray…let’s ‘face’ it there’s no competition…

Comment by: Veronica on 19th November 2023 at 16:55

One day he may be-linked up to Artificial Intelligence then we’ll know what he’s thinking about…

Comment by: Pw on 19th November 2023 at 17:18

I like it and how it was made but it could do with a rub with some stainless steel polish.

Comment by: Mark on 19th November 2023 at 17:37

A lot of people on Here are like the face, but have two faces.
There's nothing wrong with the face of Wigan, bi positive.

Comment by: Jembo on 19th November 2023 at 18:43

Nice photo Brian.

For those interested - it wasn't paid for by Wigan Council, but by MODUS, the developers who built The Grand Arcade.

Comment by: Its the famous Worsley Haller on 19th November 2023 at 21:11

The backbiters and nit pickers from off the boards are back I see, there's definitely no cherries to be picked up there Malc, so there's no need for one of them as it wont get to be cleaned anyway, to who and what it represents see what your mate Mark posted, and also below.
Mark Jackanory, with your comment you couldn't have described yourself any better!

Comment by: Veronica on 19th November 2023 at 21:12

I suppose Wigan Council couldn’t look a gift horse in the ‘face’.
