This country is finished.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th October 2023 at 06:56

It reminds me of The Workhouse on Frog Lane!

Comment by: ex wiganer on 12th October 2023 at 07:58

All there is to say that it is disgusting our own ex pats some of them homeless on the streets when they have served our country as well as our own people not got a secure tenancy home over their heads. Its our own fault nobody stands up and does anything anymore they let this government walk over us everyone is wrapped up in their own stupid self centered ways.

Comment by: Dave on 12th October 2023 at 08:19

The new residents must think this country is totally bonkers . And it is . Nowhere else in the world would this happen .
The boys at the Britannia will be looking to upgrade .

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 12th October 2023 at 08:54

I was wondering if anyone would be brave enough to comment on todays PAD & what they would say. It's a very touchy subject to talk openly about without being called a racist or some other name. In my mind refugees from war torn countries should always be given safe haven but..... as someone has already said here in our country people are needy & want a safe haven....just take a look at Pastor Mick's work. If thinking something is wrong makes me a racist, so be it.

Most people have to save up hard for a holiday in the lap of luxury. ‘They’ fight the waves to reach these shores and land on what is Treasure Island to them. It renders me speechless really as to how this problem has no end to it.. Charity begins NOT at home but in luxurious hotels.

Comment by: DTease on 12th October 2023 at 09:39

What’s happening now will turn out to be the biggest fraud on British taxpayers that there as ever been.
Billions of pounds are being funnelled into the pockets of a relatively few hotel owners and so called Security Firms.
I wonder how much of that money finds it’s way back to the powers that be?

Comment by: Poet on 12th October 2023 at 09:45

If these were women and children from war zones then no-one would care .
These fine lads from France ? Refugees my foot .
What's occurring here is akin to the ' go west young man ' migrations of 19th century America.
Imagine the Sioux holding up ' White Settlers Welcome Here' placards.

I'm all for helping anyone in peril , but these men are taking the p out of us .

Comment by: ex wiganer on 12th October 2023 at 12:34

Well said dick dastardly they are well taking the p out of us all and especially the nhs is in crisis no wonder why the doctors are still striking they can pay for hotels but not put money into the nhs. its a complete joke they save lives what do they do when they come here dos about all day long and live of the tax payers money i do not care if people think that i am racist it has to stop.

Comment by: DerekB on 12th October 2023 at 12:58

I share all your sentiments on this issue. It is a pleasure to
see that not everyone is afraid to be quoted on this subject. There are so many of our own people in dire straits, largely through no fault of their own, and with no significant help , other than through charities. It makes my blood boil.

Comment by: Veronica on 12th October 2023 at 13:19

The Indians (or the first settlers in the Americas) were friendly to the Pilgrims in the beginning when they stepped ashore at Plymouth Sound but things changed irrevocably when the Indians ended up on Reservations a couple of centuries later after a lot of blood shed… it does make you wonder about the future for your own descendants with all the different cultures. Yes I know we are all human beings but… look at Palestine and Jerusalem and a bit further afield with Russia and Ukraine. Some things never change…

Comment by: Arthur on 12th October 2023 at 14:49

No wonder they keep coming ti Britain.

Comment by: Alan on 12th October 2023 at 14:51

Comment by: Alan on 12th October 2023 at 15:14

And our TAX money Dick Dastardly.

Comment by: DTease on 12th October 2023 at 15:59

Poet, don’t compare us to the Sioux. I mean, the Sioux lost didn’t they?
Final score. White settlers 1 Sioux 0.

Comment by: Dick Dastardly on 12th October 2023 at 16:16

Alan , It's well over £2.5 billion a year this is costing the tax payer , and increasing by the day .

With winter coming on and many struggling to pay fuel bills it's comforting to know the little lambs will be toasty in the hotels , and for free too .

And do they show any gratitude ? Walk by the Britannia one freezing January night and you'll see the windows wide open with the heat just pumping out . They may as well be sticking two fingers up at us . What wastrels when others are shivering under blankets.

And the other stuff like free bus travel . Why? The bus stop near the Shamrock is absolutely rammed with them all smoking their heads off . Fags on the tax payer too .

Comment by: Poet on 12th October 2023 at 16:18

DTease , at least the Sioux fought back .

Comment by: Veronica on 12th October 2023 at 17:14

I blame John Wayne and Gabby Heyes for what happened with the pesky Injun varmints.
They didn’t stand a chance when they appeared..;o)

Comment by: Rev David Long on 12th October 2023 at 17:42

Perhaps if we'd had Home Secretaries who organised the Home Office to get their asylum claims processed efficiently, rather than spouting meaningless, posturing statements to get you lot worked up, we wouldn't have hundreds of thousands awaiting decisions on their future. We could also have a fair system of allowing asylum claims to be made without them having to resort to smugglers to get them here - an industry this country created.
We are 5th in Europe for asylum applications - behind Germany, France, Spain, and Austria. Most refugees seek safety within their own or neighbouring countries.
As for economic migrants (that's folk like the Welsh and the Irish who poured into England during the Industrial Revolution) - we have cut foreign aid - and turned much of into strings-attached grants, or diverted it into looking after refugees here. If we're not willing to help underdeveloped countries improve the lot of their citizens, small wonder some of them decide to leave home (or, as Norman Tebbit famously said, 'Get on their bikes') to seek their fortune elsewhere.

Comment by: DTease on 12th October 2023 at 17:42

They did fight back poet….and much good it did them.
The thing that gets me is that no one seems to bother about who is getting the money. The owners of these hotels are pocketing vast amounts of our money every month for doing absolutely nothing, and no doubt when it’s over they’ll be putting in huge claims for repairs and renovations.
Likewise the Security Companies.
It will all come out eventually, but by that time the money will be long gone, lost in that big black hole where all the Covid money went.

Comment by: Owd Reekie on 12th October 2023 at 17:54

It has to be said that anyone who would risk their lives to get here is desperate. Many are genuine refugees, not “chancers” looking for handouts as the Daily Mail would have us believe. To quote Diogenes in circa 500BC “we are all citizens of the world”. The cost is great but it should not be conflated with lack of housing and the necessity of food banks. These have been caused by deliberate government policies by a government the nation, in its wisdom, has chosen. Regarding costs, Liz Truss’s mini budget cost us £30 billion alone. According to Bloomberg financial analysts our leaving the EU is costing in excess of £100 billion a year. These are the costs we should be talking about. I am far more concerned about the enemy within as opposed to the enemy at the gate.

Comment by: Poet on 12th October 2023 at 18:49

Errol Flynn flopped a bit though Veronica . As General Custard he got a serious pie in the face . He didn't fare too well in the Charge of the Light Brigade either .
He was good in The Seahawk though .

Comment by: Mark on 12th October 2023 at 20:01

Rev , it is not right to help these undeveloped countries if they are not willing to look at themselves first , starting with birth control . You see people living in extreme poverty but with hundreds of children hanging off the rafters .
We send aid to India or used to do , and they are sending up space ships . Extreme poverty in India is staggering and birth control , well , there you go . Foreign aid has to go in the direction of seeing clear signs of change , I don’t see that , just populations growing larger and larger whether they can feed them or not !

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 12th October 2023 at 21:11

Mark you hit the nail on the head with a sledgehammer,us sending millions of pounds to India and they are sending rockets to the moon not on.And all the Prime Ministers are multi-millionaires if not billionaires we would be far better off with a councillor from Atherton Road Hindley etc running the country bumping weight.

Comment by: Dave on 12th October 2023 at 21:17

Crossing on a boat doesn't make you desperate. You've more chance of dying on the M6 than drowning in the channel . It's well worth the small risk considering the benefits available once you land here . We are not citizens of the world. That's just Utopian nonsense. We are citizens of a nation state who pay our taxes for the good of the rest of our country . We cannot care for the rest of the world.

The Welsh and Irish during the Industrial Revolution were simply moving around their own country . Nor were they pretending to be fleeing war and certainly didn't get free accommodation in 4 star hotels.

This country is becoming seriously over populated . There'll always be a housing shortage the way we're going . We should heed the teaching of Robert Thomas Malthus rather than some ancient Greek who had no clue to what the modern world was about.

Comment by: Veronica on 12th October 2023 at 21:35

Don’t forget though Reverend the Irish were starving from the effects of the Famine which wasn’t helped by the English.
( Plus they paid for their voyages overseas to get rid!) The same with the Scots forced out of their crofts and burning down their dwellings.
And as you know they built the roads and canals that still exist today. I do agree with you regarding the useless government dragging their heels in processing the claims of the immigrants.
Poet I preferred Errol Flynn dancing up and down the castle stone steps fencing with the Sheriff of Nottingham and rescuing Olivia de Havilland from a fate worse than death.

This seems a very nice property set in its own grounds. Far better than being crammed onto a barge off the Dorset coast. Lucky them.

Comment by: Sir Bob on 12th October 2023 at 23:20

I first saw that Kilhey Court had been turned into a fortress a few weeks ago in a video on YooTube, and it chilled me to the bone, I mean WTF is happening to this country :(

Comment by: Arthur on 13th October 2023 at 06:13

Let's look after our own people first, don't forget, there is poverty in Britain.

Comment by: WN1 Standisher on 14th October 2023 at 10:44

Is the shuttering and locked gates to keep the old locals out, or the new locals in ? Either way, why was this not felt necessary when the Britannia was re purposed ?

Comment by: Mr T on 15th October 2023 at 16:34

The issue many have is that they are mostly young single men in 20's and 30's coming from Europe. Is Albania a War zone? What are they fleeing, the Law most probably. Brits have always helped genuine refugees fleeing War, but as many have said, more and more are now coming illegally from safe countries and being given all they need for free whilst hard working Brits struggle with costs of living.

And the scary thing...… no-one seems to have a clue how to stop it!

Comment by: T on 16th October 2023 at 09:04

Live locally to this and it's a shambles. Gangs of young men prowling the street drinking cans draped in designer jackets, caught one the other side of my fence urinating a few weeks back.

Meanwhile there was a local meeting about the issue of them being there and if there is any way to put a stop to it and our MP was at a gala dinner in the US leaving the floor open to a certain local ex councillor is whipping the locals up into a frenzy promising solutions to distract from a widely publicised land grab a few months ago.

Someone needs to take charge and put a stop to the massive influx to Standish. Perhaps sending them to Shevington would be a solution, they'd soon be wanting to go home.
