Quarry spotted

Quarry spotted
The dog is a beagle/collie cross, with strong hunting instincts. He caught sight or scent of these two deer in the field below St Marie’s church in Standish as I took him for an evening walk.

The dog looks longing to get over there but something is stopping him/her. There’s a lovely mellow light to this scene highlighting the background field.

Lovely photo. There is a very peaceful "evening" feel to this scene. That dog is very alert and reminds me so much of the years when I walked our dogs, sadly all gone now.

Dogs got better eyes than me, I would have rode straight past them.

Some years ago when the children were young we went to the Leigh cats and dogs home looking for a puppy..we found one or rather she found us,the girl said she was Labrador come Border Collie but she was all Border Collie..after paying we then went for a ride in the countryside ..and stopped on a grass verge ,this photo so reminds me of her (Bess) she stood exactly like that watching sheep in the distance..it looks so much like her it brought a tear to my eye...she was a brilliant dog.

Well spotted, he/she obviously has got all the instincts from both breeds, and will let you know when something or someone is about David, also you'll also be able see where he/she is when in long grass with the tuft of white hair on the tail tip.

That has a nice rural feel, the dog, the fields & the rough track....& the deer of course. I bet he is a lively dog David & keeps you fit !

Maureen we got our first dog Ziggy from Leigh dogs' and cats' home he was only a few months old. He lived to seventeen years.

Sorry if I appear negative, but the dog should have been on a lead. Having kept sheep for years, the devastation caused by dogs off the leash is horrific. As you say, their hunting instincts are strong.

Irene, when we got there there was loads of puppies in a big play pen,we would walk around it to make our minds up and this puppy kept following us,so she picked us..she was six years old when she first came into season and at the time the word was (falsely) if the dog has a litter she wouldn't get any tumours, well it wasn't so..she had six beautiful pups and was a brilliant mum,I found homes for the all when they were old enough but I'm afraid the old wives tale was wrong ,she did get a tumour and the. Vet at the time said she was too old to operate but nowadays it would be no problem..she was a lovely dog and I miss her to this day.

That's a really nice photo! And it appears to be a realy well behaved dog!

Pat..I wouldn't keep a dog off leash around sheep,I've seen what they can do to the poor sheep,a lot of people ignore the rules of the countryside, and they're still walking their dogs across a field where there are pregnant cows,do they not realise that a cow has the same protective instincts as any other animal.

Pat McC, I don't think anyone on p-a-d would consider you "negative"....you are one of the mildest and most fair-minded people on here. Maureen, I am sorry to hear about Bess. We had two dogs besides Ziggy; they were labradors called Merlin and Ben.... All three dogs are "still with me" as I have their ashes. We just have "furry grandsons" now, Wilson and Rudy, who are Miniature Schnauzers, and we look after them when our son is on holiday.....that's enough for us these days!

Sound advice, Pat McC - when walking a dog near livestock....
Thanks for the comments. I was hoping the dog would lift its paw, as it often does when it spots something interesting - but not this time. Sadly, we're back to dogless walks again - he's gone back with his family to the Isle of Man.
