Legless
Orrell Water Park.
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-WX500)
Its little leg is hidden amongst its feathers. They stand on one leg to conserve heat. They hop from one leg to another. They’re not daft these birds they could show us a trick or two.
These photos cheer me up first thing in a morning… I am on my way home from holiday.
This is a black-headed gull and like most birds standing on one leg is not unusual, it's all about temperature and blood circulation.
Cheers Dennis.
Birds do this because of weather temperatures, they also switch legs. This is normal behavior and nothing wrong with this particular gull.
There're nothing wrong with the Gulls leg, its tucked away under its wing. Some say most birds do this because of heat on the ground or in some cases, cold temperatures. From time to time they change over to the other leg.
Well spotted Dennis.
Hope it can swim and survives.
This is a small seagull so should be fine because it spends most of its life in water, fishing.
This is a perfect Gull, the legs have no feathers so it is keeping its legs warm, the bird will often change over to the other leg shortly. They commonly do the same if the floor is cold.
Well, he could be auditioning for Long John Silver.....or he could be giving one leg a rest a some sea birds do, often see them standing on one leg....even in a howling gale.
But is this a seabird ?
He's thinking, "Here's yon mon, Dennis Seddon with his camera.....I'll fool him and that lot on photo-a-day!". Good one, Dennis!
Aw, how sad.
Sue, some large birds, (eg herons), and, as Helen says, seabirds, often stand on one leg. I don't think there's anything wrong with him.
Yes thank you Irene, I've just googled it.
It's a common or garden seagull, the one that steals your kiddies ice-cream cornet on the prom at Southport.
I once knew a girl who always stood on one leg when she was waiting for the bus.
Cracking photo Dennis,
Dennis - why have you pulled up one leg?
Gull - Because if I pulled up both legs I'd fall over!
I've watched these gulls on car parks and the antics they get up too can be quite comical, here's a couple of links to photos at The Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

there's loads of these pigeons all over wigan they make a mess everywere they go. council just arent bothered
Not black- headed gulls, Bruce Almighty. They are Herring gulls that steal from people, they are a much bigger gull.
I've always used Wiganer when I post on here, and the comment at
15:05 is not from me.
Cyril Doris and me have looked and them two singing gulls reminded us of the Marmions that would come knocking on our door when we lived at Whittle le Woods, and do so always at an inopportune time, and you know I'm sure they did it purposely. The gulls are very smartly dressed with feathers looking like black ties and white shirts that they wear, and I don't know why but them Marmions for some reason would always come to our door too in twos too.
So now finally , somebody else apart from me knows how it feels .
I've always used Wigan Mick when I post on here, and the comments at 14:00 and 19:42 are not from me.
The gulls you see around rubbish dumps and landfills, or following the farmer's tractor as he ploughs his field, are black-headed gulls.
What do you call a man with a seagull on his head?
Answer : Cliff.
Dennis, I knew it was one of your photos, before I saw your name, it's brilliant, you send some lovely photos, which I'm sure brightens everyone's day. Thank you!!
Thank you Edna.
