Photo-a-Day (Friday, 30th June, 2023)
St Thomas
Love it!
Very tranquil and spacious.
If that tree is a danger to someone it should be cut down.
Lovely photo. I love a walk round a churchyard on a nice day. It's just so peaceful.
There is something about Churchyards, peaceful and safe.
Somewhere to get away from it all. (if you know what I mean)
The red blossom tree draws you through the path.
Cheers Dennis.
Really nice photo Dennis ,the colour of the Rhododendron shrub in the centre draws you in, excellent .
I visited the church last year - it’s worth a visit.
Very interesting it’s a great age.
Good photo Dennis, it's a nice colour of magenta flowered shrub too.
Who'd have thought that signs would have to be put on trees warning that if you climb you could fall, though it'll be a sign of the times we now live I suppose, with those ambulance chasing lawyers saying "where there's a blame, there's a claim."
Very nostalgic. I regularly cycled past the Church from Roby Mill to Upholland Grammar School in the 40's. Now in Perth Australia
Oh Mick, you are an old 'worry guts ' you seem to see danger in everything.
As the song says .....Always look on the bright side of life.....that tree will probably last us out so don't worry !
That sign on the tree says “Caution! Slippery Surface”.
Presumably meant for when the leaves fall in the Autumn.
Donald Gordon Ion I was born (and still live) in Roby Mill. I have a brother-in-law in Perth Australia. It's a small world.
right Dennis, I assumed it to be about climbing, it will still cover the church authority in event of any mishap, though a bit like those clamping signs being high up, i.e. when walking along you don't tend to look up.
I had booked a flight to Perth to stay at a place called Cottesloe. I was staying with a school friend whose family emigrated in the sixties as Ten Pound Poms. Covid stopped me in my tracks. Been invited again but …..who knows.
If the flags are that slippy when wet that they have to put up warning signs, wouldn't it be a good idea to take them all up and put down new non slip flags.
Tom Williams from Leas lane was sent to Western Australia in the 60s, last I heard he was living in Mandurah and I used to own a house in Marmion.
Could you see it from here Mick?
Yes I can sympathise with you because when we lived at Whittle le Woods we also had Marmions calling, and they just won't take no for an answer, they kept on calling and so we had to put a note on the door.
They are always well dressed and smart though them Marmions aren’t they Gladys? Black tie, white shirt and polished boots, I’ll bet they stood out like a sore thumb in Whittle le Woods.
They should have put a sign up on a tree …
“No Marmions Here ‘Cos it’s very Slippy” …
They are persistent Gladys, I've always wondered how come they are all called Elmer, as that's the name on all the badges they wear, reminds me of porky pig or daffy duck.
Marmions, is that how Australians pronounce it, wonder how Chinese who can't pronounce Rs pronounce it?
They may be wearing those Therma-Grip soled shoes Veronica,

I can’t say I’ve seen any ‘Marmions’ for quite a while perhaps Covid has kept them away.
I can remember many years ago in the seventies? A protesting Marmion was kidnapped by a young blonde lady. My memory is a bit hazy but there was something to do with skiing involved??? I bet somebody remembers it better than me Cyril.
Somewhere in this graveyard my 3x great is buried on his death cert it states he fell of his cart which rode over probably had a jar or two
Veronica, I didn't remember that at first until I had a Google and a Yahoo, and I vaguely remembered it when I read it, and the headline was -
The manacled Mormon: https://allthatsinteresting.com/joyce-mckinney
She probably did okay out of it though with the publicity interviews with TV and newspapers
I could only recall it vaguely Cyril. I knew I hadn’t dreamt it. There was even a rose clenched between teeth skiing down the icy slope. I wonder what became of the pair of them…
The Weird History TV channel made a YouTube documentary about her, entitled The Bizarre Life of Manacled Mormon Mastermind Joyce McKinney: https://youtu.be/hPH9kp1W1GE
she lived a crazy life being known by the police.
Whereas he kept a low profile and got on with his life and married with children: https://showbizcast.com/kirk-anderson-now-joyce-mckinney-victim
Thanks Cyril I shall look into that. It will be interesting to see how they both ended up as it was such a scandal at the time especially as the role of ‘kidnapper’ was reversed! Very unusual…
Not unlike ‘Allo ‘Allo with Rene being pursued relentlessly by the girls in the cafe not to mention the husky voiced girl in the Maquie/ Resistance…;o))
