How many springs were there when they were new? Are they all still there and is that one of them?
I always thought it was Aspull and the Crown Hotel was gifted to the people of Wigan by the old landlord because he couldn't afford the council tax.
I'd like one of those tables in my back garden, but I've only got a yard

The stream further along goes in front of a farm, and used to jump craddies across it many moons ago.

Wood fired Pizza ? More daft cook speak .
Nonetheless , a pleasant looking spot to sip a ' hand pulled ' pint .

A lovely place to sit and watch and listen to the very heavy road traffic going over New Springs canal bridge.

Comment by: Waterboard Man on 6th June 2023 at 08:21

On my map of Wigans waterways it states that the aforementioned stream is brook.

There seems to be a theme for water lately Dennis. Is it the hot weather getting you down? Nice, place to quench your thirst…

Different angle not seen before Dennis. Nice one.

Never knew about the stream behind the pub. Must be from Rivington pike but don't know where its heading?

Comment by: Gareth Cheetham on 6th June 2023 at 09:43

What's so daft about wood fired pizza Poet???

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 6th June 2023 at 10:07

Sandra, the stream runs all the way down and under the old Whelley Loop Line where it joins what was the yellow brook in Bottling Wood. From there it runs into the river Douglas.
It starts life as the overflow from the Swan Lodge in the Plantations.

Well it's in the same vein as Pan Fried Sea Bass Gareth .
An advertising gimmick to make the thing seem posher than it is .

Comment by: George (Hindley) on 6th June 2023 at 10:21

I think it's known as Yellow Brook and it flows into the Douglas.

Then it became ..
Yellow river , yellow river.
It’s in my name and in my blood, it’s the place I love.
Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose..
Tomorrow night you’ll find me sleeping’ underneath the moon
At yellow river, yellow river …..

Takes you back don’t it…?
Those were the days…..

So Dennis, that's where the overflow runs. At the top end of the swan mussel pond you can see where the fresh water spring is bubbling up from, and at the bottom end you can see where the overflow water is trickling down, I realised it must have ran somewhere, but didn't know where, before appearing down in the lower plantations.

For getting wood smoke from the charcoal to give pizzas and other foods a smoky aroma and taste have you seen what is used, it's wood pellets, and they're exactly like those wood pellets they sell for cat litter,
https://www.kittilitt.co.uk/
hopefully chef de partie doesn't raid the used wood pellets from their cat's litter tray when cooking the pizzas, as it may give them a distinctive 'tom cat' flavour.

I once was sent to the rear entrance of the Crown Hotel at New Springs.

Nice photo, love it.

Thank you Dennis.

Poet
It's pizza, made in an oven fired with wood....I don't see the 'posher' you refer to.
A bit of inverted snobbery, yes...

Many years ago the couple who I have a drink with were the landlord/lady of the Crown Ernest(Nobby) and Stephanie Critchley.

Comment by: Granville on 6th June 2023 at 22:10

Nobby and Steph ran the Jubilee club in Wigan road in Ashton for a spell back in the 70s before they moved up to The Crown . I was speaking to Nobby only a few months ago in Low Bank road . He was in the process of purchasing a van from Alan Rac .
