Collier's
Very nice, hope it still remains a pub and not a junk food outlet, like many do.
Dennis any information, is the make over back to a pub or ie flats/homes.
In-laws of my daughter's friend used to run this pub, several years ago.I can remember going in.Was told it had wattle and daub walls.
Th' Stone Ale House, bottom uth' iven.
This building is now known as 192 Wigan Road Aspull Wigan
It doesn’t seem that long since it was brought back from the brink after being closed. So what is happening at the moment? It would be a tragedy if not kept in a good condition after centuries just being there. The tales that building could tell if it could speak from the 1600’s no less. It must be one of the oldest in Aspull/ Wigan.
The pub is in New Springs Tom.
I think the landlords name was Southern.
My 3x greatgrandfather Thomas Smith came from Northamptonshire with his family to live in Aspull/New Springs abo
ut 1843 on the 1851 census he lived in Southerns Row could this be tied to the landlord because cant find Southerns Row on the map
Ken, Southern's Row is I'm sure what locally is called Stone Row, (if not someone will say) and they're at the side of the Packet House - photo here from off the Album https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=30538&gallery=New+Springs&page=2
There's also Southern's Fold across the way from the pub on the right, and also a Southern's Square Aspull, photo here also from the Album https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=30886&gallery=Aspull&offset=0
Ken - I think there was a Southern's Fold opposite.
I wonder if it is haunted.
Found Southerns Fold so I will have to go along with you all as I live in the Netherlands
What Arthur is clearly saying is at one time there was a landlord at this pub, who's name was Mr Southern. Gary Southern.
Tom is correct, the pub is in Aspull.
