The Bellingham
Would that some enterprising Developer with plenty money would come along, pull down that horrible extension on the left and return this terrace to the fine Town Houses that they once were.
I’m sure they would sell like hot cakes.

It won't be too long until that tree falls down, and blocking the road causing the ambulances to divert.
Never been there so can't give comment. Looks a fine building though, but like you say the extension out of character with the rest of the building.
i stayed there a few times when it was a hotel. quirky but nice enough. loved Elvis in the dining room. The last time I stayed I had to run a gauntlet of young people smoking by the entrance so It looked like they were taking in homeless kids
It was beautiful 23 years ago. My daughter’s wedding reception was there. The garden behind was gorgeous. Whatever has happened?
I’m sure I read a while back on Wigan Today, that the hospital had bought it.
I've only ever been in once and that was about 35 years ago, for a meal for Mothering Sunday. The Hotel featured on Alex Polizzi's programme "The Hotel Inspector" some years ago but I don't think her plans for a revamp came to much. I remember watching it and the management at the time didn't seem all that interested in her ideas.
Nice pic Dennis, it is a lovely building I think it was owned by silcocks before NHS took over it.
I was told over 12 months ago that the Hospital Trust had bought the entire terrace and would build a multi story car park for hospital visitors.
Lots of NEW extensions are out of character with OLD buildings, but on this one they have matched up the windows perfectly.
Shame such a nice building is going to waste and as much as it would be nice to save it, the hospital could very much do with it being demolished and turned into some much needed car parking
The thoughts of that terrace being demolished for a car park is dreadful. Makes me cringe..
Mr T, I believe that Wigan has already given over far too much room to the horseless carriage. The last thing we need is yet another multi story car park.
Wigan Lane used to be the smart entrance to Wigan, but it is gradually being torn apart for the benefit of the Motor Car.
Well said Dennis my sentiments also. With what I have read in the local newspapers all plans for a multi-story car park, in wherever location around there, have been rejected by the council, so it seems like they too agree with that. Hopefully the interior shall be renovated and used for what I was told the Trust was hoping to use it for, that is short stay accommodation for patients awaiting discharge and for those with family in the hospital who need to be close by. It would be a shame too if the rear garden along with mature trees were to be sacrificed for use as a car cark.
Veronica, the buildings aren't listed, which you'd think they would be? and in 2021 they were not then considered as being at risk. https://www.wiganbuildings.co.uk/building.php?id=791
Completely agree I wouldn't like to see it as a car park but would be preferable and a more practical use to it being demolished for flats which is what will likely happen. Car parking to visit at the hospital is pretty much none existant during visiting times especially at weekend since they 'built' the new wards aat the part near the bus stops
That sounds good Cyril a nice place to go instead of bed blocking. Also could be used as a discharge lounge where patients are awaiting ambulances to take them home or elsewhere.
I grew up in this area and, as a kid, I delivered newspapers to one of the houses in the middle of that block - of course, this was when some were private houses and not part of The Bellingham Hotel.
We have past connections to the Bellingham. It’s a money-pit. It’s also a shit-hole!
