Stone Lion
The lion was originally atop of Wigan Gasworks in Sovereign Road.
Photo: Joanne (iPhone)
Well composed shot, joanne...
He looks as if he's master of all he surveys, keeping an eye on the hall when the visitors have gone home.
Lovely
The Lion looks to the future. I never knew that he was on top of the Gas Works of all places. My dad worked there 40 odd years..at least Leo has retired to a
better place and view.
That's a lovely shot Joanne.
Beautiful photo of a great hall and grounds.
Happy Easter.
Thanks, everyone. Happy Easter!
Thats a great photo Joanne. He looks a splendid beast in splendid surroundings.
Happy Easter !
Like it loads, well done Joanne.
Happy Easter to all.
Joanne, you've done some good comments and links on the history of the Lion.

A different view of a very elegant Hall. Thank you Joanne. A happy Easter to you all. X
Thanks, Cyril, I recently also found online photos of a wonderful 3D model of the lion here: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/the-gasworks-lion-haigh-woodland-park-ebcb2316e2e74381a85fe2059a8b3275
That's a good link to something different and very good too Joanne, they've even got the splodges from the remains of paint on the model. It says somewhere that the lion was painted a golden colour at one time, whether at the gasworks or when on arrival at Haigh Hall I don't know.
Very good photo Joanne. Happy Easter everyone.x
