I just wonder how those who designed, built and maintained these buildings feel to see their efforts razed to the ground?
Agree they must feel a real sense of sadness and "was it worth it" then again, those that designed and built the original Market Hall , which stood proud for many many years, must have felt very much the same ......so much sadness in the name of progress !!!
freddie, I'd imagine that the people responsible would likely to have been long gone from the town. Had gone on to pastures new and to have repeated their mistakes in other towns too. A lot of folks still have feelings for the former buildings, shops and arcade that was razed to the ground to make way for Marketgate and The Galleries, it's like an unnecessary waste of buildings and money twice over.
Can anyone else see a black shape in the trees of the lower plantations, top centre left of the photo, it's like a black monk's habit, there are another two similar shapes a little higher and extreme right just above where the houses in Whelley are, about an 1 inch or 2.54cm above Tesco. They are most likely tricks of the light etc., but strange how they resemble Grim Reapers looking on at the progress of the town centre.
I commented on this one Cyril… it does like giant monks. Perhaps they are recording for posterity all the destruction of Wigan town through the ages. On the Last Day all councillors will be held for retribution! ;o))
